Your First Warm, Flat Portrait Session | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Warm, flat lighting is a technique that creates portraits that appear to have a full range of contrast and depth but in reality, deliberately lack the deepest shadow tones and brightest highlights. To complement the flat look the colors are pushed to something that feels right but at the same time, are a little warmer than normal.
So how is it done? Well, that’s exactly what photographer Gavin Hoey will show you in this lighting and post-processing tutorial. Not only that but Gavin demonstrates the subtle difference in technique needed to achieve the warm flat look when working in a high key and low key setting.
Starting with a basic blank white wall in his small home studio, Gavin explains why the usual correct exposure isn’t the best option when it comes to seeing warm tones in your photos. He then goes on to bounce some fill light into the shadows and finally, he explains his Photoshop tips to clean up the images.
After working with the light background, Gavin switches gear and moves on to a darker background. He repeats the same steps as before but with a few differences to once again achieve a warm flat look.

I would ❤ to work with Chloe, she’s an amazing model
Gavin, you are the best. If you are ever in Chicago, you (and Sam) have a place to stay. That said, this video could only be improved if you had spent a minute discussing your props: the wooden platform Chloe was standing on, the furniture included in the shot. In fact, I'd love to see a video that discusses the stuff/props you have off-screen in your "small home studio," to be used for shoots. P.S. Sam is great.
Hey Gavin...greeting from NY.....as always a Chloetastic ;) video....love her outfit.

Is that the ipad you are using for tethering? How to do it?
Awsome as always Gavin!! I want to know how you teather to the tablet with your camera as i have the same model 😊? What tablet and what software/app?
@GavinHoey
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tobias. Use a TetherTools USB2.0 extension cable to connect my Olympus with my Lenovo Miix Laptop (in tablet configuration) The software is Olympus capture to tether and Olympus Workspace to display the full screen images.

@@GavinHoey Thank you so much for the answer Gavin!. Have now order a cable from tether tools and will tether to an macbook i already have and later fix a 2 in 1 laptop 😊 You give so much inspiration and good energy . Keep it up 🥳
First!
HI Gavin can you tell me what your equipment setup is for your tethering please.
@GavinHoey
2 жыл бұрын
I use a TetherTools USB2 cable to connect my camera to my Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 tablet / Laptop. That runs Olympus Capture to run the tethering and Olympus Workspace to instantly display them full screen.
All my olympus cameras as well as the OM1 give me 2/3 of a stop underexposed images, compared to what my Sekonic light meter indicates. That makes me wonder whether you’ve calibrated your light meter to correspond to your E-M1.3. Have you?
@GavinHoey
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Björn. I don't think you can calibrate the L-308S other then make a note of what your feel it's "out". Mine is fine but as much as I trust it I'll also ignore it if I think I know better 😉
@bjorncarlen4503
2 жыл бұрын
@@GavinHoey For what it’s worth, I think the light meter’s right and the cameras are ”wrong”. Olympus has their ISO higher calibrated than many other camera brands, giving the impression of comparatively less noise. I can easily work around it, but I find it dishonest by Oly/OMDS. My Nikon D600, which is collecting dust on the shelf, has its ISO exactly where Sekonic has it.
Are you tethered to an iPad? And if so, what app do you use?
@GavinHoey
2 жыл бұрын
Nope, I'm tethered to a Lenovo Miix 2 in 1 tablet / laptop.

Hello 👍
Nice clear presentation, but I can't help thinking you could get 95% of the way there with a generic setup plus a post-production preset... while preserving the option of walking it back if the client comes back and says, "I don't know, I don't like that foggy brown look." AITA?
