I've been a pianist for over 35 years and have played professionally since I was 12. I tell people, "owning a Steinway doesn't make you a concert pianist. You need to learn and PRACTICE. " I find that phrase comes in handy across the board, lol.

Very true. I always thought when I was learning guitar that I’d be so much better if I only had a Les Paul like Ace Frehley of Kiss. By the time I could afford one I could play just as well on a cardboard box with rubber bands on it! It’s all about practice, practice, practice - p

I picked up a lightly used Andy Seb coil liner on eBay, and a new Mickey Sharpz brass hybrid for under $600. No regrets. They could easily outlive me and are solid workhorses.

Hey my friends..how are ya?? I've been tattooing since I was 15..I'm 40 now..I think getting just a decent beginner kit..and focus on your drawing /tracing .. getting your lines solid with color..when u switch to a real human..the biggest problem I had was the body is not flat like the table..needle depth is so so important..keeping ur hand at the same depth as you bend around an arm or something..it was tough learning all this..I ABSOFUKINLUTLY love tattoos

I remember when we got a thermofax, it was $3500. There werent any printers for stencils back then. I 100% agree with you guys. The starter kits for the most part are not good for the professionals but is a great start for learning all the things beside laying down a line. Even then you can get the concept and see if you really have it. Alot of people think they would be awesome at it because they can draw. Simply not true, there are alot of skills involved. Someone who is good at woodwork and can paint might be better. Theres other skills invoved. So to avoid wasting money start off like they are saying. Over the years i have traded tattoos for tons of high end equipment because they bought it and realized they just disnt have it.

I used it so much that 1 day, mid tattoo and in process of changing a needle, the threading on the thumb screw went.. 😬 went to a tool shop, bought a similar screw spent 10min force screwing it in to re-threaded it.. and continued the tattoo.. I make Paul right on learning to hand draw stencils.. a good skill to have.. good line practise to Any news on the Acus machine yet.. ? Just interested to hear your views Stay safe

That is true. A lot of smaller company’s are able to hit that sweet spot because they have less over heads etc. if you look at the larger brands they have more and better engineers developing machines compared to a one man team, so instantly that causes a price increase for the one compared to the other.

My first machine I went too cheap. I got lucky that it’s not useless but it’s a dedicated liner. And that was fine because in the beginning that’s all I was doing. But I’ve picked up a couple more that can do shading and lining and push big mags. Having the crap machine was a positive experience because I can appreciate a nicer machine now. It’s hard in the beginning because there are very few people with experience that are willing to give quality advice. And even more that are just equipment snobs.

So what im saying is reliability also comes into it so buying above chinese grade and lower end pro models may pay dividends in the longer run.

@@EveLuna23 Unfortunately, my journey has been exceedingly difficult. I've been told by a shop owner that no shop is going to apprentice anyone my age (or gender as apparently many shops favor women), no matter how good of an artist I am, or how much prior professional experience I have. It was also explained to me that even if I were to find a mentor, there is no way any aspiring tattoo artist can reasonably expect to make a livable wage in under two years time without establishing a large client base. It would seem my only recourse is to be self-taught - which the whole industry looks down upon - and risk the liability of building a client base completely on my own. It's been pretty demoralizing, but I will still forge ahead. Many others have succeeded in the past as self-taught artists, so there is no reason why I can't do it too. Obsessed with the history, the people, im drawing/painting every day, getting work done myself, looking into machines and learning them (haven't bought them yet as I want a good machine to start not a "beginner" one). I'm kicking myself for not finding this love for tattooing 10-15 years ago but can't do anything about that lol Anyways, this age aspect is def a bit deflating but as you said that isn't changing how I feel either about wanting to still do it. I do have a child and yeah it's a bit tough planning to apprentice for a few years for minimal to no pay with kids and bills. Also not wanting to cut corners and doing it solid. I've wanted to bring this stuff up with my artist and prob still will, but I don't want to come off like "well you must just not really want it" or "yeah maybe you just aren't cut out for it". At the end of the day you don't really need anyone's "permission" but at the same time it sure helps the learning curve having some mentors and help along the way. Not to mention a legit shop to work out of to build customers. Hope it works out for you! Im gna keep chugging along myself and make this stuff happen.

Surely it would be better to say buy the best your budget can afford. I have recently just bought a nearly new second hand bishop wand packer, for less than it would cost to buy essentially a new 10 year old Cheyenne machine. Don’t get me wrong I understand your concept and I think the channel is great, keep up the good work.

Well if you look at it like this. A cheap machine that isn’t the best of quality you can be looking at around £150 a£250 on Amazon. A Cheyenne spirit motor body is about £230 so in that respect it would be better to buy that machine as we know it will work and last. My father is almost 40 years a tattoo artist, and he told me,that you can make a good tattoo with any machine. It all depends on the hands of the artist.Tattoo industry has become too greedy.Your channel is that way, too. If you didn't understand what I WROTE,don't read.

Yo bostjan… it’s been a while. While I agree with what you are saying. Not all machines are made equally and as I always stress on the channel, better quality built machines will make you faster and more efficient as an artist. Also more reliable machines will break down less etc. So while I totally agree that it does depend on the hands of the tattoo artist. A good quality built machines will always trump a low quality built machine. I would also like to add that the trail of thought your father has lies mostly with could machines as they are all basically the same. It’s not the same trail of though with rotary machines. Also there are multiple factors as to why machines from certain company’s cost so much these days. Hopefully you understand what I mean. As for the comment which implies we are greedy, this channel has cost us a lot of money to produce and still does. Money for the most part that comes out of our own pockets so people like yourself can have readily available information for free. I’ll be quite honest with you also, I don’t think you fully understand what you wrote as you are just regurgitating something your father has told you. You lack the knowledge and experience to make a fully formed opinion of your own, I’m not being rude by saying this just stating what the facts are.

@@ThatTattooShow Even when it comes to coil machines, they are all not created equal, at all. A cheap chinese machine cannot laydown a line like something like a Time machine or Pulse. Really they cant even stand up to a Technical Tattoo Supply branded machine. I may not have 40 years experience but i do have over 20. Maybe the comment about the 40 year experience saying basically that ther all equal comes from the older era. Alot simpler designs and style. When i came into it "New School" was a new style, which paved the way to basically where we are now.

That I totally agree with. I was using coils as an example because they all essentially have the same build i.e. wound coils, armature bars and springs etc which is why someone could think they are are the same. But you have the same trail of thought as myself.

@@ThatTattooShow 😉 knew exactly what you were saying. People dont realize how much metalergy goes into a machine and also how it was done. Especially the coils themselves. Set up spacing, spring weight. I wish everyone coming into it now had to start where we did. Making needles from scratch, setting up machines and tuning them. Theres so much that they have no clue that its even a thing. Now days they just buy a rotory pen and think thats it. Most people that really know coil machines cant completely give them up. I finally got a rotory several years ago now but i still line with a coil machine. They are a completely different creature and they are all different.

Bang on, with rotaries it’s a whole different thing as well. Not all motors are equal, they are all tuned to the specs of the companies who in some cases pay engineers to work of the design and manufacturing of them. Some do far more stringent testing than others. Then there’s where they are made, if made in Europe labour costs are more expensive than if they are made in China and assembled in Europe etc. It’s never as simple as what people think.

That’s not how it works sadly. You can’t just ask us for a machine, it’s not fair on everyone else. Each person will have the same opportunity to win a tattoo machine when we do the giveaways. Also each person will have to be working in a registered tattoo studio. So either an apprentice or tattoo artist. If you don’t meet the minimum criteria, you can’t enter.
