Good path. Next you should learn python or if you dare, i started with such but i love thr syntax the c family, i dont touch assembly yet but i pretend to debbug once all goes wrong. I started with c itself but Java and c++ are way more usable if you pretend start a hacking path but c indeed and assembly does complete a hacker. I recommend learning kernel linux aswell, if you did not yet.

Thank you for the WireShark course. After 21 years working in a maximum security forensic institution I got my neck broke. One spinal surgery down and three more to go I am looking for a different direction of job skills. And after being in the heads of criminals so long and being able to think as they do I thought this would be an interesting job to pursue. Plus I have geeked out on building since my first Apple 2c or commodore 64 and my first build was a IBM 286dx chipset as a kid. I appreciate your honesty as well as being realistic and direct. @@mozart0 you don't really need any knowledge, and sometimes it's even better cause you do stuff that should never work but does anyway. basically you go "what if I push that button" and see if it does what you think it does or if there are side effects. of course it's not a satifying answer, so stuff that may be important : some knowledge of command line (linux shell/windows powershell and cmd) as you more often then not login through ssh and/or to a headless server. knowledge of active directory and what you can do with it (so you can do more than say "I have AD admin access", you should be able to deploy a dummy flag app through AD to show why it is bad. you should be able to know how to fix common vulnerabilities. knowing how to use scan tools and when to use loud (nmap the whole network) vs stealthy approaches (compromise a switch). have knowledge of applicable laws and the limits of your contract, you don't want to get fined. imo those are basic things you may want to know. being able to scan the most common CVEs and give a report is a good first step, it's not that great but some businesses want a simple solution and be at least a bit secure. of course, obvious stuff should be checked like paswordless or default passwords on ftp/rdp/vnc exposed to the internet. cisco devices with sanfran as the password. password, root, admin, incorrect, QWERTY [name of business] etc passwords. publically available private keys on unprotected shares (search common key names) being able to recommend or setup a reliable backup would be great. if you can at least check the top 10 cve and suggest mitigations for those, that's still valuable, though you should be transparent that this is just a "trim the obvious" not 100% secure after that. there's much more to know, but that's why it's fun. tl;dr there aren't any absolute prerequisites, only stuff that's nice to know. of course if you don't know how to use a mouse and a keyboard, you're going to have trouble. also, learning to touch type is a great thing, since you're probably going to be spending most of your time writing write ups.

@@mozart0 what Maniquri said is very true. There is a long list of topics that it covers. The basic things to know are simple security principles, basic networking, and common vulnerabilities and attack types. From there you can build into how to detect and exploit those attack vectors and even some ways to defend against them. Just take your time learning one thing at a time. Make sure you understand the basics and how to use some Google tricks to find what you are looking for. Forums are also a good place to look for help when you get stuck. Don't expect people to just give you answers though. Always try to do research first. Remember that this type of knowledge won't be learned in one day and never give up. There is always going to be more to learn and understand.

I'm looking at starting out. Cost is a factor, but so is the recognition of the certification. I've contacted EC-Council and Offensive Security. Looking at CEH, CPENT, LPT, OSCP, GPEN. Mainly. But also considering other certifications to gain more knowledge. Of course, GPEN is just crazy expensive, I guess OSCP is reasonable, the EC-Council certifications would be insanely expensive doing all. But EC-Council sent me another option, which there isn't much information on their website about. VAPT consisting of CND (Certified Network Defender), EHCS (Ethical Hacking Core Skills), CEH, CPENT, and LPT. All in one year, at a cost of only $1499. A reduction by over $3000. Making it not all that much more than OSCP.

@@kennethsullivan2437 -Yes I agree, the corect sequence is make defensive (Security+) to after make ofensive (pentest+). -I am not a fan of CompTIA so much that I am preparing for CCNA in January and I intend to do the LPIC later in March, not CompTIA Linux + (there it is almost an ideological issue). -But I went to register on the CompTIA website a few minutes ago and when you ask for the proof Blueprint you have the option to do a demo of the proof and I made Linux +, Security +, and Pentest + in a few minutes (there are only 10 questions ). -Linux + I did 8/10 but I have been a personal Linux user since 97 and I use it professionally since 2006 so ok, but for certification I make a point of taking some courses that I separated in Udemy de Script and some things before. -Cisco the other day offered a Security training and asked 10 questions too, but network and basic seals I did 9/10. -In the Security + CompTia demo I did 5/10. -On Pentest + only 3/10. -I agree I will do Security + first there AWS and after a training that was seeing BlackArch I may be this Pentest +.

@simandmod well this is KZread... You could Google "how to build an OS" but you'd get text whereas here you get a video with a coding tutorial.

sec plus net plus and A plus is the go to pipeline for pentest what would you recommend for more hands on training to help understand and pass the exam for pentest ? I only got one of the three certs but I felt like it was mostly book smart knowledge and gaining and basic platform to build off of, I thought some more hands on approach would have helped me understand what I was learning more.

I would only use the material to study. I’d take the CEH because of its recognition. Is it still over 1K even if you have the two years requirement? It’s my understanding that you need to pay for their training if you don’t have the required experience to sit for the exam without their training.

The CompTIA provided sample questions for this exam seem very easy. Are the sample questions an accurate indicator of what to expect on the exam? I have a feeling that the actual exam questions may be more difficult.
