ABOUT THE SIRENS:
Broadmoor installed 13 sirens in surrounding towns of the Broadmoor secure hospital, to warn local residents of a dangerous person that could have escaped. Broadmoor is a hospital to some dangerous patients.
The sirens were tested at 10am each Monday and I have separate videos for most of them sounding.
THE SIREN HUNT:
Initially these were quite hard to find, but we found them all. Some in council depots, compounds, parks and believe it or not - in the middle of housing estates metres from houses! Some are in secure places with no access at all.
HOW THE SIRENS WORK:
The Klaxon CS8 siren.
A 415volt 3-phase motor spins two rotors on either side. One rotor is for the high tone and the other for the low tone (the one with most holes is the HIGH tone).
During the escape tone, the airflow is cut alternately (about once a second) to each rotor by a shutter on each end producing the distinctive high-low tones. I believe these are known as CODED SHUTTERS - hence the model name Klaxon "CS"8.
Both shutters are opened together for the all clear tone. You can just make out the high and low frequencies being produced together if you listen carefully.
WHY ARE THERE ESCAPE SIRENS?
They were installed in the 1950s/60s with the intention of warning residents in surrounding towns and villages to remain in their homes and keep their children supervised following the escape of a Broadmoor patient.
In those days security at the facility was nothing like it is now and some would say they are no longer needed. But they do a job - "to warn". Escapes can never be "impossible", but "more and more unlikely" as security and procedures improve at the hospital.
2018 - WHAT NOW?
The siren system was originally installed in the 1950s. The copper telephone wire system is outdated and parts have not been available for many years now.
With various faults developing and lack of parts and knowledge to fix it, a decision had to be made.
• Broadmoor Sirens - Loc...
After a lot of meetings and consultations, it was decided to maintain the existing sirens as best as possible then remove them when they fail.
Bearing in mind that security at Broadmoor has been vastly improved since it was built, and the sirens were installed in the 1950s, and now a new 'more secure' hospital nearing completion, it was decided to decommission the whole system rather than spend a lot of money to update it.
By the end of 2018, all sirens were be removed. Here is one being removed:
• Broadmoor siren--REMOV...
A new siren will be installed on the new hospital, which doesn't sound that interesting (electronic, not motorised).

With the CS8 its not changing the hi lo, all the shutter is doing is muting that side, if you stood in front of the machine so both sides were facing to your right and left, the hi side would be on one side and the low the other, when the siren is going hi lo hi lo its just alternating the shutters on each side alternately, in the all clear tone its just opens them both, and when running down it closes both which is why the noise gets a lot quieter very quickly, if the unit was properly functioning... the bagshot siren wasnt and the low tone was stuck open.

Oh brilliant! Does he have an interest with sirens, and alarm related stuff? When I was about 6, I loved wiring things up and taking things apart to see how they worked (especially my toys, then couldn't put them back together again!!). Later when I was about 10 or 11, I developed an interest in alarm devices - bought many burglar alarms and detectors - my room was wired up with so much stuff (goodness knows how I got away with it in my parents house!). Unfortunately, the only siren system simular to Broadmoor is Carstairs in Scotland (still working). Might be a bit scary for your son as he's only 4, if you went there. Broadmoor sirens were removed back in 2018. Let me know if you have any questions from you son, and I'll try and answer them! Matt

At first I thought it was sounding the all clear first like it did once but I heard the high tone alternating. New to this week though as I heard it operating fine from my English classroom last Monday. I'm now inclined to believe that I've kinda figured out how the telephone activation system worked, and why the telephone box remains on the other sirens that have been cut down. The telephone control boxes, along with the equipment inside of them, are owned by British Telecom. Because they are property of BT, Broadmoor can't even open those boxes without BT's permission. This is one of the reasons why the control boxs are mostly left. The biggest reason why these control boxes remain, is because of their location. It serves no benefit to BT to physically remove the boxes, as it would require work to sometimes dig up underground phone lines, which would be of no benefit to BT and would cost a lot of money to do. With this in mind, the Cock-a-dobby siren site still has that mysterious 4th box in the back corner of the compound. I believe this to be a telephone junction for the surrounding houses, as well as where the sirens dedicated phone line comes in, so it definitely isn't going anywhere. Now let's talk about what's inside the control box. Because the sirens produced three signals, a simple ring down circuit can't be used. Because of the age of the system, this leaves the possibility down to something similar to the old Carrier control units that were scattered all over police departments across the UK that were used to warn of air attacks. This system activated with a tone sent over telephone lines and worked similarly to a simple ring down circuit, with the only difference of course being the tone instead on ringing voltage. Now since that tone would only engage one contactor for as long as the tone is present on the phone line, the system alone wouldn't be able to activate multiple signals, especially a special signal such as the escape tone. The most probable way is that their are 4 of these tone receivers in the telephone control box, each independently activated by a different tone frequency, but connected to the same phone line. These receivers are basically the size of a smartphone, so that box would seem oversized for 4 recievers, which lead me to believe that also inside the box is a latching circuit so that the phone line doesnt need to have a constant tone to continue siren operation. Reciever 1 would be the escape tone. Reciever 2 would be all clear. Reciever 3 would be the cancellation circuit. For example of the tones used to activate the signals: a bursting signal is used to wake up the phone lines or "prime" the lines. This was due to the fact that loss of the signal could occur if it was sent too quickly, so the recievers are woken so they are actively listening. Escape: After a few seconds of this priming, a tone (let's use 1700hz sine as an example) would be quickly sent over the phone line. This tone would activate the escape tone relay, and the latching circuit and timer, and would activate the various relays in the small relay box. After the timer cancels out after 3 minutes, it closes a circuit in the cancellation circuit and stops the siren. All-clear: the same thing as escape only with a different tone (say for example a 400hz sine wave) Cancellation: when the specific cancellation tone is received, it activates the cancellation circuit, which de-energizes the latching circuits, and shuts the siren off. Test: when the specific time for "test" is received, it most likely closes the "test" loop-back relay in the mini box, as well as operates a short 3 second timer. The test works by sending the test tone through the phone lines, and having it loop-back to Broadmoor in a hopefully pure sine wave to indicate a successful test of the telephone system. Because of the test function, it's obvious that each siren has the potential to be activated individually. This is all speculation of course, so i can't be sure of it whatsoever. Even though the system has been decommissioned, Broadmoor still isn't ready to officially reveal the activation system, most likely because similar systems like Carstairs still exist and it would possibly be a security issue, and also because BT still might own the activation system, Broadmoor might not know how any of it actually works. I've based all of this on my prior experiences working on sirens, as well as my knowledge of telephone systems, but once again I can't be certain for sure.

also I’m inclined to believe that the controllers were replaced or updated in the 60’s as broadmoor switched from pulse to Hi-lo after the home office retired the attack warning grey (Fallout expected within 1 hour). Now back then how hard would it have been to switch them from Pulse to Hi-Lo, surely it wasn’t an easy task?

The reason for the Bagshot siren not working currently might be because of the fault with the All Clear starting first which is not what Broadmoor would want since it suggests to the public that theres a real escape because of no All Clear following afterwards. Bagshot siren is due for decommissioning anyway so they probably just left it potentially with the power off.

Hi Joe. Oh no...! I think you are about 2 years too late I'm afraid. They were decommissioned about 2 years ago, and by the end of last year they were all physically removed. The only one that works now, is a new speaker siren in the grounds itself, but they test that 'silently' now. You best bet is 400 miles north! That's Carstairs, especially Ravenstruther (my favourite) - pronouced 'wren-stree" - that system is tested on the third thursday of each month, at 1pm. I know it's a massive trip but that's the only system of old fashioned sirens that still works. Broadmoor sirens no longer exist :( Give me an email if you want more information mattw.youtube@virginmedia.com

I then searched it up and they have actually decomissioned 6 sirens and only let specific ones in the local area surrounding broad moor go off were as the others are not activated unless there were to be a proper escape 😬

+InstaRage FTW Hi, just wondered where you got your info about the 6 decommissioned sirens? I've been trying to follow the siren progress as best as I can. Last year they had meetings in village halls (I have a recording of one) explaining the options to the locals. They elected to decommission the "far out" sirens and keep the nearest sirens to the hospital, possibly upgrading them. Then after new hospital is built they will have only one siren, located on the hospital. After this I believe they did a U turn and decided to carry on as they are, and try to maintain the existing sirens to the best they can, hoping to stretch this out for a couple of years to save money (saves them having to do any major work during the change over from old to new hospital).

  • @mrmattandmrchay

+InstaRage FTW I suspect that the ALL CLEAR tone sounded everywhere at that time. Remember that the filming of the two locations was done on completely different days (I think I recorded the Ascot one in Nov 2014 (yes, ages ago!!, and the crowthorne one more recently in Feb 2015). Reason why all clear ahead of Escape? I really don't know.

Hiya Tegan, They were installed in the 1950s/60s with the intention of warning residents in surrounding towns and villages to remain in their homes and keep their children supervised following the escape of a Broadmoor patient. Patients at this hospital are generally dangerous people who need specialist treatment and would be a danger to the public if they were treated in a standard hospital. Some should be in jail but need treatment - their behavour would be a threat to other inmates. When the hospital was originally built, security at the facility was nothing like it is now and some would say the sirens are no longer needed. But they do a job - "to warn". Escapes can never be "impossible", but "more and more unlikely" as security and procedures improve at the hospital. Hope that answers your question :)

For the motor question, we examined a siren here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fIt8xpOep8neZJs.htmlsi=Ott-gQNZBAqyMHP9&t=671 About the visual difference, if you see the video above at 10:07, you'll notice that one at the bottom has more 'slots' than the other side. As shown in the video, one generates the 'high' tone, the other the 'low' tone. Therefore the red rotor that generates the sound - one has more 'fins' than the other which is the visual difference you noticed. Hope that helps.

Sometimes I would go to a siren that's been working fine for ages and set up my camera on tripod etc, then I wait for 10am and all I can hear is a distant siren and the one in front of me does nothing! The station one here, according to the guy on the station it stopped working for about 3 weeks before I went there. Bracknell Station was one that you could rely on but that one ALSO hasn't worked for ages. I know as I've wasted my time THREE times now when it hasn't worked. I think that half are still working but I cannot reliably tell you which ones as I don't film them that often now. I suppose they are not reacting to fault reports very quickly now and are dragging it out until they are are decommissioned in a few years.

If you tried to get through the intake the bird screen will stop it and the damper will stop it also because it separates the intake into two and the drone won't fit. Secondly the output ports on the siren will blow the drone away stopping it from getting caught. But if the drone did get caught in the ports then it will no longer be a drone. The Weight of the choppers and the strength of the motor will obliterate it.

+mrmattandmrchay thank you for replying I am very great full for that and I have visited all of them but non off them have gone off except for siren g which was very very loud... Much like you I am very interested in these sirens and I honestly don't know y but what I don't understand is if they have other plans with sirens then y not alert the public and from this video with the bagshot siren did the all clear tone just go off first or was an editing mistake

+InstaRage FTW When I edit the siren videos, the footage goes in one long line, then I cut bits out when I switch to the second siren in the video. So everything you see, together with the clock at the bottom is "how it happened" with nothing extended or missing (except when I switch to the other siren in the editing of course). So yes, the bagshot siren did the All Clear before the Escape tone - first time I've seen this. I have a spread sheet if you are interested? Send me your email by PM and I'll email it to you. As it happened, Siren G didn't work the first time I went to it.

+mrmattandmrchay Oh the only thing I should mention is that the two sirens featured in this video were filmed on different days as I cannot be in two places at once. So the maybe EVERY siren was tested ALL CLEAR then ESCAPE at the time of the bagshot filming, possibly.
