Your enthusiasm is infectious and I can't wait to read Livy.
Aubrey De Selincourt was an amazing man. He was classically educated in some of the best English Public Schools. He flew for the RAF in WW I and was shot down - spending several years in a POW camp. He also translated Penguins version of Herodotus' Histories and wrote an amazing book called "The World of Herodotus".
Tired of the daily penguins!? Never! I enjoy hearing you talk about these ancient writers and their fascinating backgrounds.
Nothing could’ve gotten me closer to pulling down my War with Hannibal off my bookcase than this video!

A Sunday Read-along might or a March with Romans might:))))) How do we go about making this sexy book-critic do one of those?:)))))))
Great commentary. Just got my copy with De Selincourt’s translation. Can’t thank you enough for a treasure trove of fascinating and insightful reviews. I’m so amazed at the depth of knowledge you share about especially classical authors!
For me this is my education of classical literature. I swear I don’t remember these being taught in college. I may not get to read all of these but I’m learning and getting a better foundation of the basics that I have forgotten or was never taught. Thank you for this service!
We’re not getting tired! I love your daily penguin and especially all your thoughts on the classical authors and books! Keep doing your daily penguin everyday! I’m halfway through Rome and Italy right now and I love it. I’m a classical history nerd and started at the beginning and have lived every page. I agree with you completely on how engrossing and exciting and fun it is to read Livy.
The Selincourt translations are still in print with Penguin, fortunately. I bought them as the result of watching this video. Thanks Steve, I absolutely love this series.
I do hope you continue with the Daily Penguin 🐧. It is something I look forward to every day and has really made me understand how much we have lost of the writing of the ancient world. It makes me appreciate what has survived even more!
NOT AT ALL TIRED of the Daily Penguin!...but if you need some variety, I suppose we’ll understand.
I've just downloaded all these volumes! brilliant! thank you, Steve!
Definitely not tired of DAILY Penguins!
Have you heard that penguin classics is coming out with an edition of anatomy of melancholy in July? These are great btw! I can't wait to get to read Livy!
Thank you for this Livy session. Always my favourite and the best. Memories abound.
I read the first book of Livy last year and I loved it. The only reason I didn't read the other ones is that I had a deadline to read other things. As soon as I am back at the same continent as my copy I will get back to reading Livy. Yesterday I was watching a documentary in netflix about the Ottoman empire and it was one of this post-game of thrones history documentaries, with actors reannacting great chuncks of it, with a lot of unnecessary sex and violence and from time to time it cuts to some historian. It made me thing about what you were saying about Livy' approach to writing history. I think these documentaries go about it in a similar way, I am sure they are sticking to the things that we know for certain, but they have no problem inserting a flashback Mehmed when his mother told him that he had to go live in court or a conversation between the chief of the mercenaries and the princess of Constantinople.
This is a great series!
Loved my first reading of The War with Hanibal! Can't wait for a reread. Thanks for introducing me to Livy!
I just ordered the whole of Livy. Again, as always, terrific discussion.
Daily Penguin! Daily Penguin!

Steve Donoghue if it’s too much, completely understand. They’re just so interesting and love watching all of them!
I see that Amazon have Henry Bettenson's Rome and the Mediterranean, a 1976 edition.
I’m sold!
I have the Livy Penguin set that I found used over the past two years. One of my classics treasures.👌What classics are your favorite people? Mine is Plutarch.
have you read all of those books on the shelves!?! I WANT TO DO THAT
I do enjoy your commentary on the the Penguin Classics. I am currently reading their "Ten Days That Shook the World". I hope that when you get to the 20th century that you review it. I would love to hear your thought on it.
Perhaps I am really biased but this is some if not the best content BookTube has to offer. I subscribe to the many comments below indicating we are not tired. If there are other reasons then, by all means, do the next one on Monday but not on our account. Thanks as always for sharing your books, wisdom and passion with us.

What a sweet thing to say! Thank you!
As you mentioned his dates, I immediately wondered why he's not mentioned as a source in the Cleopatra book I'm (still) reading. Guess that's part of the lost sections. Too bad, there don't seem to be many contemporary sources other than Cicero... he seems a bit biased!
The English Lurker enjoys the daily penguin but I acknowledge you may need a weekend’s rest. Kind regards.

Hah! My lurkers briefly surface, IDENTIFY themselves as lurkers, and then submerge again below! It's hilarious!
Is Livy's account accurate or dramatized a bit? I was planning to buy Livy, but am not sure. I wanted an accurate account of ancient Rome. Plz advice. Thx.
Shouldn't the actual order be: The early history of Rome (From the founding of Rome to the Gallic invasion in 386 BC) Rome and Italy (386 BC - 293 BC) War with Hannibal (The second Punic war, 218 - 201 BC) Rome and the Mediterranean (201 - 167 BC)
No need to name "Daily Penguin" to "Weekday Penguin" - but the decision is up to you.
Mine are ordered....thank you Amazon. Lee K.
Tired of the daily penguins!? Never!!!!
I believe the title is 'your daily penguin' not 'your weekday penguin ', thank you very much.

See? Some lurkers do come out of the shadows sometimes, if its about something that impacts their lurk time 😆
