    As a grim and gritty overly muscular man with giant shoulderpads, overly bright and shiny armor and spandex that's a ripoff of something else, ludicrous articles of clothing and excessive pouches that serve no purpose, constantly squinting eyes, the same hairdo as 20 other people, ankle-deep garbage everywhere I go, and a robot arm to hold up my oversized impractical laser gun, I am offended.

    As another commentator pointed out Spawn’s deal is an ironic hell for him. By his own admission in some ways his current fate is worse than Hell because he has to live with the fact that his ex-wife has moved on since his death and her new husband has given her the life he never could but wanted to. So how come Chapel thinks making the same deal would be a good idea? Spawn explains to Chapel that the deal has trapped him in an ironic Hell of his own making so why would Chapel assume his deal wouldn’t also trap him in some ironic hell?

  • @hitomisalazar4073

    @hitomisalazar4073

    3 жыл бұрын

    Because Chapel is kind of dumb. He takes it as a literal thing. "Oh they'll do something where I'll lose my loved ones and see someone else take my role in their lives? HA! I never liked them anyway!". So he just listened to the literal events Spawn related instead of thinking about how it was torture for him and that Hell being Hell might torture him in some personal way.

  • @DawnOfTheOzz
    @DawnOfTheOzz3 жыл бұрын

    Ya know, at least in the Spawn animated series, there was an attempt to make Chapel seem sympathetic, a government mercenary riddled by guilt over having murdered his best friend for shadowy reasons, especially in the midst of coitus with a "lady of the night" screaming "I'm sorry" as horrific flashbacks burn through his broken mind. Too bad it was all undone by season two.

    I think the reason creators keep coming back to youngblood is because the lack of characterization and almost nonexistent backstory gives writers a relatively blank slate to work with. Not to mention that since most of the characters are rip offs of Marvel and DC characters it allows for deconstructions of those characters. Upon reading Youngblood myself, what stood out to me as the biggest case of lack of originality is the villain group The Four. They're a repaint of the DC villains the Fearsome Five: low-key supervillains identified by a number who unwittingly work for a higher power (The Never Man for one, Trigon for the other). Three of their members are also clearly remixes of their DC counterparts: Strongarm-Mammoth Starbright-Shimmer Gage-Gizmo It's so blatant it's amazing.

    "The assumption was that because the stories were dark, THAT must have been why they were so successful." The same thing happened in magical girl anime after Madoka Magica came out. A bunch of hack anime creators thought that the reason Madoka was so wildly popular was that it was a dark take on magical girls and churned out a bunch of truly vile anime that featured young girls being mutilated and tortured just for the sake of it.

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@EngineerLume Well for one, that review was made before then. Also, you're looking at it too simply. It's no secret that security was far lower than it should've been because Trump didn't bother calling the National Guard until things went too far (DC Guard is under presidential control alone, and Trump didn't have them set up the way he did for the BLM protest because his own supporters were present and he wanted a large demonstration). The DC mayor also wanted lower police presence due to a belief that the mere presence of high security riles up protestors, and of course Trump wouldn't argue against it for that situation. It's also no secret that the rioters had at least some help from the inside, and letting crowds slowly trickle in is a known crowd control tactic when things are out of hand, no backup is coming, and no order to fire has been given. Pretty much, it is unbelievable, unless all the right conditions are met, the most important one being inside help, whether it be direct or not (Trump didn't want an insurrection, but his refusal to post the Guard and his further comments allowed one to happen). In fact, the comic was even in line with that, as the terrorists were hired for a demonstration, and it can be assumed that everything was rigged for them to get that far, ranging from the absence of security to the amount of damage the terrorists would do. Also, the comic featured the White House, not the Capitol Building. They're two different buildings.

The man does not handle loss well (Which you'd think he would, given his many business failures) and this was the ONLY way he was going to stay in office. A more apt comparison would be the peaceful protest outside the White House that Trump had attacked with chemical weapons to disperse so that he could have a terrible photo op outside a church. You know, the one where he held the bible upside-down.

    You know, I often look back on the 90 comic crazy with equal measures wincing embarrassment and self depreciating humor. It was the age where good guys were bad guys, bad guys were worse guys, and upping the sex, violence, and profanity made comics "mature." Pounches and scowls for the boys, implants and spine contortions for the ladies and lots of guns and poor literacy for everyone. Anything to be grim, gritty, or extreme. On one hand if you wanted to indulge in some absolutely puerile, adolescent, so bad it's good power Fantasy crap you'd be hard pressed to find a better source than 90s Comic books. And living through it first hand it's hard to deny there was a certain...energy in the air. Like with the rise and success of Image and other indie publishers the game had been changed forever. On the other hand you look back on things like this and wonder just what the hell we were thinking at the time. How we ever tricked ourselves into thinking it was actually good. Garish (even for the time and genre) costume designs, paper thin characters, empty and shamelessly derivative stories, scattershot publication schedules, and based far, far more on style, hype, and ego than actual quality or skill. When you play out Youngblood end to end like this it almost reads like an exaggerated parody 90s Anti Hero comics. Like a Producers gag without the punchline. Like...how did we EVER think this stuff was cool? XD

    I blame the tendency of fans to BS things to try to square circles. A long and true tradition that can be traced back to famously things like the Han Solo: "Made the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs" line and how everyone bent over backwards to not accept what the script actually said (He was lying to try to jack up the price on what he figured were backwater hicks that wouldn't know better)... but how somehow Star Wars FTL drives operated so that speed actually reduced distance. You look at what Youngblood and other comics of the time were... and people I remember did a lot of "Fill in the blank" guesswork, approximations, and interpretive dancing to try to make it somehow all work out in their minds. So yeah. Just what I remember at the time. A lot of people making up stuff that wasn't in the comics to justify why the comic stuff was good, interesting, or deep. Because they tricked themselves into it as it was the only thing that made sense to them. Even if the creators themselves never put it in.

    I've reached the opinion that it would have been better to do a Badrock solo title than Youngblood. He was perhaps the most developed character in the series (which probably isn't saying much, mind you, but still...). Also, he has a ready-made supporting cast: his parents, his agents, possible government handlers...

    So what I've gathered from all these years of Youngblood comics is that Rob can't create any original characters, lacks any tact (See Youngblood #10 for proof positive of that alone) and is a sadistic maniac (see Youngblood #7 for that, and bring soap to wash your eyes out with). And since most if not all of these Youngblood reviews came out around my birthday these are paradoxically the best and worst gifts I've ever received.

    I was so into the series when I was a kid and the funny thing is that I knew it was trash, it’s just that it was MY trash. It was the first series I read that wasn’t made by either Marvel or DC, and it was also the first series that I read that wasn’t one of the really popular hero’s that they always make movies about such as Batman or Spider-Man. As bad as the art and writing is, it gave me the feeling of reading something that was kind of cool and underground and that I wasn’t just some poser who only knew the big hero’s from TV and movies. Then I got around to stuff like Blue Beetle and Army of Darkness and realized “oh it can be that and good at the same time” lol.

    Here's food for thought Rob: How about making Shaft the main character, and have him be an idealist who is disgusted with Graves and the government treating Bloods who die or outlive their usefulness as something that can be easily discarded and replaced, and actually being openly critical of how the government employs Youngblood and the publicity Youngblood receives pointing out that the Bloods aren't able to have secret identities or normal lives outside of the team and the celebrity is putting their loved ones in danger and preventing them from seeking help for PTSD after carrying out shady orders. Have Sentinel actually be a villain, i.e., the leader who toes the line, and doesn't care about his team and is in it only for the fame and fortune.

    Rob Liefeld: "It's fascinating. I am truly fascinated by it. I understand that there is the “He's not worthy” camp of the success that I enjoyed and the people who were around me at the time. I told my whole studio, “This is Camelot right now.” I said, “The reason that I call it Camelot is: What happened to Camelot? It crumbled and they all scattered searching for the grail.” Guys in my studio can tell you that, in the first two years, I probably gathered them at least quarterly in the big meeting room to remind them of that-and when the success was happening, I would scratch my head. I mean, what do you do? Do you just go inside and go, “I'm not going to ride this out. I'm not going to take advantage of this?” We just tapped into something. And I've read where we were supposed to change the world in some drastic way. I think that we contributed a lot of positive things as part of our Image collective, but I'll be the first to tell you that we were never the best artists. We were never the best at anything, but just like a song or a band or whatever, we caught on and we toured rigorously and then it was time for something else." web.archive.org/web/20060714193744/www.wizarduniverse.com/magazine/wizard/000853542.cfm

It's amazing to see how far AT4W has come from text reviews to the popular review/adventure series it is today. I'm not gonna lie to you, Youngblood doesn't hold up. It sucked back when this thing saw print and it still sucked years later. If I were to pick the single worst issue in this compilation, it would be #10, mostly for Chapel's suicide. Say what you will about that horrible image of naked Troll in shower, but even that was nowhere as horrible and/or tasteless as some asshole deciding to blow his brains out because the government gave him HIV, complete with a gory image that was probably left out of the worst Liefeld panels list with good reason. Like normaly if you want to explain how he was a violent monster that had to be put away, all you had to do was that last bit where he punches someone to death for insubordination. No, instead two dumbasses unreasonably decided to walk into a trap after he warned them, and another unreasonably blamed him AND THEY WHERE CLONES ANYWAY SO IT'S NOT LIKE BIG COURT MARTIAL/GRIEVING WIDOWS SERIOUS ANYWAY. Anyway that's why we lost Desert Storm.
