I agree with casting different women's bodies on screen, but disagree that "performing at the level of men" is the standard. There's different standards in different sports and leagues for a reason, and men aren't the standard that everyone else fails to attain. It's an artificial, biased way for society to present the topic.

Considering how her movie from last year, _The Marsh King's Daughter_ was one of three female-led movies to come out the same week and died with no one seeing it, I hardly expected a crowd to line up for the first showing at 3 PM yesterday. Nobody showed. They told me the projector turns off after half an hour if no one pays to see it, but audio still runs.

I just watched National Velvet on TCM and I really liked it. I’m not much a sports fan but I enjoy period setting movies and old Hollywood style films. Too bad it’s showtimes are at one theater 30 min away from me and are during my work hours. Side note I’m tired when misogynists call movies with female leads girl boss as an insult. When there are hundreds of boy boss movies telling stories of male athletic teams or individuals. There are also countless of action movies with a man who is the “chosen one” and can do the impossible to save the day. The same ppl who b*tch about female empowerment are the same ones who are vocal about protecting women/ girls in sports but bash their appearances, mentality, and not believing them when they are assaulted. Get a grip people.

I was a fan of Star Wars episode 7 and 8 but 9 made us all regret defending those movies. It really sucks for the actors and the core trio (and Rose) because they never had a chance to shine. The writing and directing really sunk these films. I was not into another movie for Rey, but if they can actually focus on her as a character, I’d be all for it. I loved Ridley in the Marsh King’s daughter.

I’ll probably check it out after this review, thanks Grace. I do wanna add though, I don’t think Star Wars fans hate Daisy Ridley. I’m pretty engaged in the fandom and have been my whole life and people were mostly onboard with Rey until the Last Jedi imploded the whole story and had her one up Luke. At that point people AGGRESSIVELY turned on the character, but to this day I hear most Star Wars fans mention how they like Daisy and thought she deserved better than the terrible writing in the sequels.

So, I remember watching this review when you first did it back at the end of May, Grace. And I thought, I need to see this movie, but it wasn't in any of my theaters. And I had totally forgotten about it. Then I see it showed up on Disney Plus this weekend so I decided to give it a go this morning and omg you were so right, it is so amazingly good! And I am trumpeting everywhere to let everybody know how good it is and that they should watch it. It's so should have gotten more publicity and advertising in the theaters, and the poster is absolutely horrible, you're right. I just wish people could see this, it's so moving. And thank you for saying what you said about Nyad. I know both Annette and Jodie were nominated for Oscars for it, but it took me three viewings to get through it without falling asleep! This movie was so so much better! In my opinion, of course. And I am a huge fan of Jodie Foster's, too!

As a swim coach, I've made sure my younger swimmers know who Gertrude Ederle was and what she did. We hold a "Gertrude Ederle Day" every Aug. 6 to commemorate her English Channel swim. We can't swim open water, so we warmup by swimming the perimeter of the pool without lane lines many times so the young swimmers can get a feel of what it's like to swim open water with waves. They love it! I had been looking forward to this movie's release so much, I went to see it on the first day of release. It didn't disappoint.

Women watch movies that "were made for guys". I understand there are things only girls and only guys can relate to and that's okay, but it doesn't mean you can't watch a movie because the person starring it it's not the same gender as you. I'll never understand that sort of thinking

  • @rjhemedes

@@moondevell Some women will, but most women won't. That's the hard reality Hollywood has had to confront as they continue to pump out women centric stories in sci fi, fantasy and action movies wherein the the majority of the paying filmgoers are men. This is something even Grace has been pointing out within the past year. Women will never be the majority of movie goers when it comes to genres like sci fi, fantasy and action flicks. Women tend to rally more behind rom coms, romantic movies, and dramas.

Women are more likely to go to the theater alone these days than 30 years ago, so there's that. Also, seeing women go in pairs to _Aquaman 2_ I asked one team and they said were there to see "Momoa's Muscles" but he didn't take off his shirt in that movie! They'd have done better seeing _The Fall Guy._ I guess you'd call that "the female gaze." The female superhero movie isn't drawing the female crowd. If there are "chick movies" (but non rom-coms) drawing young women, they need to be spaced out more. Daisy Ridley's _The Marsh King's Daughter_ appeared the same week as two other female-led movies, _What Happens Later_ starring Meg Ryan, and _Priscilla_ which drew the biggest crowd of the three. (I saw _What Happens Later,_ and my aunt said "We saw What Happens Later today" which was a funny word play.) Currently in theaters is _Challengers_ which some women (and men) are seeing, _Back to Black_ which isn't getting much of an audience, and _Babes_ which only women are seeing, and not many of them. Sounds like they are again splitting the audience.

After forcing my wife to watch Furiosa and guy kinda films it's always a treat to have you (Grace) recommend movies she will like to even out the score! She pretty much has the same reactions to films as you besides the more geeky superhero stuff : )THANK YOU!

It's clear Disney didn't really believe in this movie much so wonder why it was made. About female sports currently though, the onus is pretty much on women to support leagues like WNBA and it's just now starting to happen. Does highlight what a big deal the Williams sisters were however and how they were such superstars that they got everyone to watch women's tennis. Maybe Caitlin Clark can do the same thing.

the Rey hate is a strange thing but she is getting another movie so your entire premise is faulty. She is an anomaly because she has helmed multi Billion dollar box offices ...but did she really?
