So true! Our breeder told us to crate our 12 week old GSD at night and never let him sleep on our bed until he adjusts to the crate. But the important thing is to give them a reasonable length of time for them to try and regulate themselves. Really it’s about finding the balance. I assume puppies are like babies, falling asleep is like pressing the pause button and how they fell asleep is how they’re going to wake up feeling, basically a continuation. As they get older, you can start taking steps back softly, less holding, caressing and smoothing where they’re meant to be asleep, to just being near and verbally settling them, to being more distant from where you let them know they’re safe and you’re near to them not needing you at all but it takes time and sometimes they’re the ones going backwards and you need to go back to what works with them and restart the process of slowly stepping back until they can settle themselves. It takes a lot of time and patience but it is worth it.

The most important thing babies need to learn in order to be calm and confident adults is that the world is safe and people can be relied on. The reality of life is taught later.

@@Jonathan-A.C. I mean, I think I get their point. The world is often an arbitrarily violent place where you can get punished for a lot of innocent things. However, believing this is not genuinely in conflict with the belief that children should be brought up in the understanding that they are safe and loved. Nobody is perfectly safe all the time, but being raised in a way that instills the belief that you are *unsafe* at all times leads one to look for danger in everything as an adult, including in places where there is no danger. Constantly being on high alert doesn't actually help people navigate a harsh world, since anxiety expects danger whether there genuinely is any or not. It is also exhausting and puts a lot of strain on the body and mind, making it harder to respond to problems effectively when they do come up.

@@jeepmanxjyou have no clue what this guy does off camera . One short clip his dogs get into a small skirmish and he says “enough” one time and they immediately separate. I don’t see any other way to achieve that other than delivering physical correction. And there is nothing wrong with well timed understood correction to a dog. I have never seen an all positive dog trainer that has a dog that will listen to them when it really wants to do something else like chase something or go interact with some kind of other stimulus. Stop believing everything someone says about how they do things. Some people care what others think. He obviously has excellent trained dogs so whatever he does on and off camera works. All positive or all negative dog training is not optimal. Balanced training with only corrections when necessary and also understood by the dog is what works best. If he achieves the level of obedience that his dogs have by 100% positive training then he has to be the only one in history. And technically just telling them the word enough is a verbal correction. Technically. I do believe to do everything possible in a positive way snd set them up for success as much as possible. Dominance is a misunderstood term by some, he is definitely the pack leader. There is a reason that dogs in packs give correction because it’s natural and it works. It’s what they naturally understand when done correctly.

I had to literally wear one of my kittens for almost a month when I first got him. He would scream if I put him down. I put him in a big scarf folded up and tied onto me and he could poke his head up any time he wanted to see something. He was the last in his litter and the owner couldn’t find him when he was looking. I was just standing there, during a tornado, and this kitten launched itself at my chest like a missile. Miss him… 😢😢😢❤❤❤

@@Wesmin Well, I suppose that while Mama Thang isn’t strictly speaking a work dog, she still needs to maintain her training and daily activity level, and there’s a time where the puppies are old enough to be taught a bit of independence. Forming a bond with their peers in the rest of the litter might also be valid. And of course, all moms need a little break from time to time :)

@@Wesminwhen my rescue had her puppies she would literally hide for them because they were so energetic and wore her out until she would pass out from exhaustion. Moms get tired especially with multiples. This mama dog probably just got done feeding her pups and that's why they are sleeping. She's probably wandering off to take a well-needed rest and she trusts her owner to keep her pups safe.

I think so. It's very similar when adopting a puppy and keeping it awake past their natural bed time. I made that mistake with the puppy before and would wake her up (9-10 weeks old) before I went to bed for her to go potty. Afterwards I had a really hard time to get her to sleep again as she was in over drive... My current dog would play with the other puppies but wouldn't stop on her own. She would get grumpy and bitey until I got her out of the play and in my arms just like Pink. She would squirm at first and even nip at your hands but five minutes later would be fast asleep...😅

“Doesn’t mean to her nothing is wrong” is a very important lesson. I feel this when I see parents telling their kids they’re fine when the kids are losing it. Everything is fine to the adult, but for the kid, something is wrong. And it’s bonkers that adults think that forcing any social creature-be it human or dog-to handle distress alone will lead to confidence, not insecurity.
