Both Spinks brothers came from less than nothing in the Pruitt-Igoe housing project in St. Louis which was condemned around the time of these Olympics. They did themselves and their mother, who raised 8 children on her own proud with tremendous performances in Montreal.

Leon was considered the leader of the great group. It was thought little brother Michael didn't have enough international experience to medal. He proved them wrong. In all the USA got 4 golds in a year with the Russian and Cuban teams present. The Spinks brothers as well as Howard Davis and Ray Leonard all took home the gold.

Spinks had an interesting way of guarding his head, he'd put his hands on the side of his head by his ears, with his elbows jutting out. If you think about it, although this is an unconventional way of doing it, it should be very effective, maybe more effective than having your hands in front of your face, especially if you have very long upper arms as he did

I still can't believe how Spinks froze against Tyson. I'm not picking him to win against a naturally bigger guy but he had skills and power that could have given Tyson fits if it would have gone longer. Spinks went his whole career mostly in the driver's seat, not that time! Glad to see him get out and leave us with good memories

Michael just wasnt a natural Heavyweight and Tyson was the real deal, Spinks didnt have the speed or strength to keep Mike off him. Spinks also was a very technical and methodical fighter who took his time. Mike was a killer and started fast in damn near every fight. I think Spinks was intimidated also, i really do. Even if Spinks wasnt intimidated Tyson hit him with some wicked shots that he never came close to feeling in the light heavyweights. Spinks was a great light heavyweight but he was no match for a beast like Tyson.

have to laugh at the Russian near the end as he seems to be suggesting that he lost because of a low blow. That low blow saved his life!!!!!!! As well I think the Russian was given the chance to continue after a time-out. 99% of fighters continue after a time-out, and though the video doesn't clearly show whether it was well be low the belt or on the belt, the Russian had had enough and QUIT

In my opinion, the best light heavyweight ever. An outstanding career as an amateur and as a pro. Top amateur background. Olympic Champion in a golden age of boxing. Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Leonard, L. Lewis... They defeated the top amateurs from the communist countries: cubans, eastern europeans... Maybe Mike Tyson was unbeatable in those days. But, had Michael survived the very first rounds, maybe he would have outboxed Tyson, and we don't have to underestimate Spinks' power, even in the heavyweight division... Who knows... But we do know just what happened
