This particular episode brought back memories. I grew up in New Zealand in the 60/70s where British cars ruled. The A35 is a unbeautiful example of 1950s Brit cars. My favourite, should I ever find one to buy, is the 1950s Ford Popular. I have a friend who owns a genuine Ford Mexico which he rallies every now and then. Keep up the great adventures for us.

I love the looks of the A35 and my Mum and Step-Dad loved them to, so many moons ago they had 1 each. Sadly that love ended when they both had serious crashes in them within a few years of each other my Mum walked away from hers but my step-dad was in a coma for 3 months, when he come round he had lost 15 years of memory which over time he got back all but the last 3, but he never drove again.

Some rubbish is talked about 2dr Mk5 cortina's a few years ago it was 11 left now 6! They were only avl in base & L trim levels for the UK market with the 1.3 ohv eng & 4 speed gearbox ( a 1.6 ohc with automatic transmission was avl to special order for disabled drivers through the government motobility scheme). The 2dr was the very lowest spec version of the range through the 3 1/2 year production run probably 10,000ish were made with around 50-100 surviving most have been fitted with the more common 2.0 ohc eng & higher trim specifications. 28 convertibles where made (one prototype 1.3 in red made by crayford which belongs to the chairman of the crayford owners club) then a further 27 under licence by carbodies of Coventry ( who make the black London taxi cab) these where all fitted with 1.6/2.0 ohc or 2.3 V6 cologne engines & GL (middle of the range ) trim except 1 with range topping Ghia trim & was displayed at the motor show , 1 LHD car was made & survives on the continent. 16 are thought to survive I own #9 the only 1.6 automatic version ,two definitely no longer exist. The rarest 2dr mk 5 Cortina is the ford ex-works 3.0 rally car that campaigned during 1981 & then in private hands until 1989 since which it's believed to have been in storage. Keep up the otherwise great work tom & look forward to your next book. Craig of the Sheffield Cortina Centre.

The difference between the US and UK, as far as car collection is concerned, is that in the US land is cheap and cars are really plentiful and interesting and in the UK not many people have the space to store cars and what is available is just too rotten or boring. That said, these guys were great car types and Jags are very interesting indeed, because they have the heritage and racing history. Needless to say finds like this, especially in and around London, are almost impossible to find, because all the land is bought up for development by greedy property types and what is left is just too expensive - having that much land attached to a home in England, especially around London would put it well outside the reach of ordinary people! Nice episode though, but I look forward to your return to the USA - nothing personal you understand old boy.
