    For everyone who says donkeys are dumb, donkeys aren't dumb actually..they are intelligent but as the man said, they were bred DOCILE meaning bred in captivity...they have no natural instinct of how to run away and don't know about larger predators. They will fight off wolves, coyotes, and foxes...smaller preds, not larger. I have a donkey and he protects our livestock from coyotes. He trampled and killed 4 coyotes last year. Donkeys can be extremely dangerous but against smaller predators. Smaller predators they KNOW they can rid of easily..

    Bailey Green no..they are used to protect LIVESTOCK..do you see livestock around them??? They are not useless in africa. There are wild dogs and such they can ward off. As a HERD, they have a fight or flight reflex like horses..they FLIGHT meaning run....sadly their breeding doesn't allow them to run like a horse, they were bred for muscle and endurance.

    It depends on the situation. If the Lions are killing his/her livestock and is not being compensated for the loss then I understand why they would kill the Lions. I wouldn't like it but I would understand. If they are being compensated for the loss then there's no reason to kill the Lions. However I have no understanding why people would fly to Africa specifically to shoot a Lion and then hang it's head on their office wall.

    @dude they did not feed the donkeys to the lions. This behaviour is actually natural, it just doesn't happen very often. Lions, like pretty much all carnivores, or opportunist. The donkeys have been bred to be docile, and can only deal with small predators like foxes, which is why they make good companions to smaller livestock like sheep. In Africa, with such large predators, they pretty much have no defenses, or even ability to assess the danger. With such easy targets, the lions gorge themselves with as much as they can. They'd do it with their normal prey, but since the lions evolved along side them, they are extremely well defended with horns, kicks, hooves, and other survival mechanisms. Donkeys have no such equipment, and so the lions get as much meat as they can, taking the opportunity. It makes even more sense considering this setting seems to be in a desert area, perhaps the Kalahari or Namib, where food and water are already scarce, making the lions even more likely to do this.

    Reminded me of an story and photo spread that appeared in a Wildlife Society (now WESSA) magazine back in the 1980's about a cantankerous donkey that found its way into the Kruger. The article claimed the donkey had never seen lions before so when it came across a pride instead of being scared it spent an hour chasing the bewildered cats around (in retrospect I supposed the donkey might well have been rabid). A lion did eventually get behind the donkey and bring it down but the story stuck with me as a lesson on why one should never run from lions.

    If farming was my means of feeding my family. Those would be some dead lions. I dont think the lions going extinct is really a concern for the farmers in these areas. I see it from their point of view. Wild donkey's now, next its their goats. Plus having lions that close to their village is a little unsettling, they can and have eaten people so I would tell him to relocate them or they will be killed.

    The nature will handle the balance of the food chain in the wild why we human put our noses in everything, also why we are blind when it comes to help other human being or sometimes we consider it as not priority as helping the wild, Furthermore we see people crying about a dog but not on a homeless person, shame we human for sure we lost it.

    I am a Mo2min I hate this stupid talking point. Humans and dogs coevolved such that to a human, a dog is like a one of our children, and like a child, no matter who’s it is or how far away, when you see a helpless child who doesn’t know any better needlessly suffers, it’s heart wrenching. That’s how most animals react to the young, while maintaining a relative indifference to the adults in the community (particularly those who have already bread). The young is the continuation of the species, it’s just that we’re wired to treat dogs as one of our young (in some groups of people more or less than others),

    Prof. Potato people are pathetic, trying to get a dog to live with instead of human, however bringing an animal in a four wall box, you call it coevolved? I would be happy to see the dogs playing around in an open wide area like farms or big gardens rather than staying with us pathetic people. I would advise you to watch some dog whisper episodes you might learn about dogs or animal in general.

    TheKellin1 not when they share the same habitat like this , it’s not as simple as “keep your livestock away from the predators” it’s the reason farmers the world over have trouble with carnivores. Building a giant fence isn’t a good solution in an desert like environment like this since there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to stay sedentary forever and there’s also no guarantee it’ll be worth the effort to even build As for dogs , unless you have a lot of them that’s a terrible idea to have against fully grown lions they’re more likely to be killed

  • @InVinoVeratas

    @InVinoVeratas

    ^ yeah there’s no permanent solution other than an undesirable one and another undesirable outcome (extermination of predators, or separation of livestock from prey which is not natural).. not an easy solution for sure. I do feel for these farmers, this is hard work, and predators make it harder. At the same time, nature needs these predators.. it’s not an easy position to say the least..

    They can certainly hold their own against smaller predators, like wolves and coyotes, which is why they’re used as guard animals for flocks. And wild asses certainly can be quite aggressive.

    I would start by shooting the lions with chemicals that inflict seriousdiscomfort on them with a dart gun. Shoot them when they are prowling aftr donkeys or livestock, and they will learn. I don't understand why simple problems are made into dilemmas. Also- what makes these particular lions any more important than any other ones?

  • @barbarablattler1305

    + wilson blauheuer Actually these lions are very special. They have adapted to the desert and live of the animals in the desert. Dr Flip Stander is studying them for many years and help in their conservation. The donkeys are domesticated animals of the Ovahimba people in the Kunene region of Namibia. It is the only means of transport for those people who are of the poorest in Namibia. Cattle are their only income and livelihood. If any one of these are killed by lions, it is a great loss for them. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism does compensate the owners of killed livestock, but unfortunately only by a fraction of the real value. This is very sad.

Donkies are high commodity in those third world countries. So you paid the owner to take the donkies to the location of the Lions for some vicious entertainment recording. Smh.

    Justin Watson well they can't fence them in due to it being desert, which makes so the soil moves around so having to continuously to re-build it isn't worth it, and they can't keep an eye on them 24/7 so of course some donkeys are gonna get eaten, the farmers have to deal with it nothing they could do
