Young Guru: Creativity in the engineer's chair | Loop

Музыка

Young Guru has worked with the likes of Jay Z, Beyonce, Drake, Rhianna, Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg. In this conversation at Loop 2015, he discusses how his approach to making records allows him to move fluidly between the roles of co-pilot, audio specialist, and even musician, and how today’s engineer can (and should) be so much more than a technician with good ears.

As a Music Production student, I found this interview to be very helpful. At this point I'm learning about how to create by using Ableton. I didn't like the DAW at first because I was so used to Logic Pro X, now I'm beginning to see the difference, so let the fun begin! Thanks Young Guru! It was a great interview. I never heard of a such a great innovator until now. I feel like I'm sitting right beside him as a student being taught the art of being a better producer. I find effective criticism to be hurtful but also a opportunity to grow musically. I decided to drop out of college as a medical student to pursue my passion in music. I decided to take the initial step to learn about the basic fundamentals of perfecting the art.

stratsplit Hi, I'm studying at The Los Angeles Film School. I have some snippits of a beat I did with Ableton on my Instagram page @jacogphebe. I'm currently learning recording vocals and Protools but I won't ease off Ableton (lol).

telvan Reves Hi, you should...LA Film School has an Excellent Music Production/Music Business degree program. So far I've had a great experience. I'm almost close to graduation next year. I've learned a lot so far and the excellent thing of it all is the fact that you learn a bit about everything needed to eventually run a professional home recording studio or obtain a career anywhere in the music industry. I hope to not only run my own studio but to also launch a worldwide entertainment business for everything that has to do with music and sound that will enable folks on a lower budget and are rendered quality products of goods and services. It won't be easy but I strongly believe it can be done if you don't see it as just a way to make money but experiencing the thrill of doing what you enjoy and are most passionate about :)

I just watched this video, and wow the timing of seeing this was immaculate. As a young and aspiring hip-hop artist who has pushed things aside for a number of years, just to learn how to produce so I can cut out the reliance of someone else when it comes to pursing my artist career... this was super informative and extremely motivational! It gets hard trying to do it all yourself, and I just wanted to appreciate this moment I had by dropping a comment. Shout out some love to Young Guru, you a walking blessing my guy!

Commenting on Theory Vs Application: Young Guru says you ought to know the differences between the settings to know how they will change the sound of your music. I like his subtle mention about technicalities because he's effectively said that the tool for the job may not always be the tool you are trying to use to get your desired effect.

On rushing: Yeah it's noticeable because hindsight or being aware that people aren't doing their best anymore when you see them become comparable to something that isn't a best practice in your industry. It's a big convenience factor you consider when you're dealing with time. Just my two cents :)

amazing. For folks digging his part about knowing your tools, check out Amdrew Zeleno’s channel and/or audio course. I’m in it right now, best money I ever spent on audio. He’s teaching how to become an engineer like Young Guru describes. Knowing the tools’ pros and cons and how to listen and think about every situation.
