I heard this song once in my life. I was in San Francisco tripping balls on acid in 1987. We were parked under a bridge (think it was the bay bridge close to the wharf) watching the rain make crazy patterns on the windshield. We were listening to some indie/college station. And this song came on. I never knew the name of the song. But I remember the DJ saying “that was the Young Canadians”. And it went into the memory banks in the deepest recesses of my mind. I’m sitting here in my living room doing nothing in particular. Feeling a little off kilter because I’ve decided to stop taking my prescription sleep medication. My main reason for wanting to stop is because I felt like it was clouding my memory. And all of a sudden “The Young Canadians” popped into my mind. I’m like “let me KZread them and see if I can find that song”. And here I am! I think it’s working already. My memory is coming back! Either that or I’m having a flashback.😂

I meet Art at a Canada Day celebration at Thunderbird Stadium: He was by himself and it was between acts so I just walked up to him to told him how much I like his work and asked to shake his hand. He took the time to chat with me for 10 or 15 minutes. A real gentleman!

Mary's real name is Armstrong. She lives on a farm in Alberta these days. If you can, check out the recently-made doc "Bloodied but Unbowed", which has interviews with her (and most other original Vancouver punks). In fact, she's in the trailer, just KZread search "Bloodied... and watch.

The Knowledge Network has the entirety of "Bloodied but Unbowed" on their website to be streamed, and it has a positively heartbreaking segment involving Art. Also, I recommend getting your hands on "Guilty of Everything" by John Armstrong (Buck Cherry from the Modernettes) for further tales of Art. Also because it's fucking hilarious and awesome.

I had the EP of this. So long ago...I was a Soundproof fan too. Ditto... One of those songs that's a little too catchy for its own good - singing "Let's go to fuckin' Hawaii!" was not something you did in public in 1979 unless you were very brave.

Did a gig with them way back when.... early 80's in Vancouver -played a christmass gig for a women's prison support org. and the crowd was...let's just say they were older than we expected. They were the headliners and we were back up. God it was a nightmare/blast for so many reasons more than we ever could imagine! Great memories of that gig for sure! Love the K! Years later lived in the same apt as Art in another city....Love the guy!
