Clothing wasn't any cheaper then than it is today relative to income; what _was_ cheaper was fabric for sewing your own clothing...today, fabric is extremely overpriced, with Asian readymade imports made with low-quality fabrics, the cheaper option.

Why do people have this compulsion to bitch so much about modern movies in such a robotic way? The exact words are 100% predictable. Everything old is perfect and nothing new has any value. Why even bother, when we all know that every 5th comment will be identical anyway?

The only people who accepted it was the ignorant people that made the film and thought is was ok to wear the paint. That they didn't know what they were doing was mean, unkind and racist is a fallacy. That you are not offended is your loss - I am offended and I'm sick of people telling me not to be and that it is ok because it was ok long ago. IT WAS NEVER OK!! (And by the way I'm not young!)

I don't understand why the orchestra players painted their faces black and left a white circle around their mouths as if they were monkeys. A very strange decision by the director.

It was the usual minstrel make-up of the era. Just like Al Jolson.

It would be bad to do that now, but as little as 20 years ago and certainly back then when this film was made, there was no bad intended by it, so no offence was taken.

Stop colorizing black & white movies ! Black & White has its own aesthetic and the colors in colorization look ugly !

Don't watch it then. I love it! It gives back so much depth and detail! It makes the faces, costumes, and scenery look real, instead of like a flat, grey or brown cardboard effect of sheer emptiness.

As a great admirer of Classic and Hichtcock films, I find very tacky to watch this film - which was shot in glorious Black and White - with these awful colors - KZread should begin to take these Videos down👇

I find the black face extremely upsetting and colonial and what would have been an enjoyable film, i assume it's just a reflection of the times one lived in.

Yes, it is a reflection of those times. It's just how it was. It's awful to say this but they were not taught appropriately that all God's children should be treated equally.

@@daphnekivinen9482 No offense intended, but you and the OP must both be quite young, because you obviously don't realize some of the facts. It would be bad to do it now, of course, and I would hate for anyone to be offended. But as little as 20 years ago and certainly way back then when this film was made, there was no bad intended by it, and certainly no insult, so no offence was taken. Some people masquerades as black jazz musicians because they respected them. It we not a universal insult as the R wing tries make it seem.
