    Geoff can project on the low notes better when he's singing live than you might think. But yes, they pre-record for their videos, including Layne on the violin and beatboxing. But they are actually singing and playing when they record as well, and they dub over that audio later. The exception here is that Layne didn't try to play the instrument and beatbox at the same time; he _is_ capable of doing so, and he initially tried it when they filmed this. But they decided it looked odd, so they left that out of the final version. They also had prepared a vocal version of the solo, but Geoff asked Layne to try it out on his violin, and they liked that better. This and their 'Warriors' video have earned him the nickname Violayne.

    When performing live, Geoff and Layne (beatbox) both use different mikes that they hold right up to their mouths, the singing folk use standard mikes. This was Geoff's arrangement and I love it. Looking forward to more Voiceplay and Geoff!!

    I’ve been to one of their concerts - what you hear here is what you’d hear in a concert. I don’t know anything about tech, but I will say you feel Geoff singing as much as hear him. His voice through those 6 foot tall pro speakers literally made my ribs vibrate. And yes, the vids are prerecorded and they sing along while filming.

    Layne's prowess with the violin earned him the nickname VioLayne. They actually made a shirt inspired by this performance. It says VioLayne on the front, with the "O" being the Voiceplay logo. Then on the back it says Acapella it's better with instruments.

    VoicePlay cover such a wide range of genres it's hard to pin them down; they are unique in their style, often theatrical, always amazing. and yes Geoff started a channel of low bass covers during lockdown when the group couldn't meet up so much. Having said that, he doesn't only sing bass, having a range of five octaves. You're right, they film over a pre recording although they are singing along with it. This is common way of making videos these days and they make no secret of that.. As patrons we see the BTS videos and watch how it's done. But if you ever see a live recording of them you'll see that they can do iit live too. Geoff's deep notes do make everything vibrate. :)

    J. None is a former member of VoicePlay who joined to sing for the Navy in 2021. So now he is a featured guest. The Navy has moved stationed him closer to the boys. He is in Washington DC now. So a short flight to Orlando. Check out their live performance singing with Chicago last month. The guys each have recording studios in their homes. Watch their videos of VoicePlay Loops #1 and #2. Geoff also has videos of himself singing live on his channel.

    Voiceplay members performed in shows at Disney World and/or Universal Studios in Orlando FL many many years ago. So they learned how to project their voices and sing clear so everyone in the audience can hear and understand them. They also toured around the world in the early and mid 2000s until COVID lockdown. A couple of interesting videos Voiceplay did recently.... "Voiceplay Loop 1" and "Voiceplay Loop 2". They roll dice for order of turn then do arrange part of a song in order of the dice high to low. It's amazing cause you get to hear their voices raw. Same with Geoff's bass. Geoff also has some live shorts videos on KZread you might want to check as well. His solo channel he does use instruments. And clones himself 3-4 times for harmonies. Each with their own name and personality..... Jeff, Jeoph, Goff and Daryl. If they aren't in the video with him they are the background voices. Because of their performing in theme parks they love to dress up with costumes and intricate makeup. They never release a video until it's perfect. Whether it's a week, month, year or never. They are known as both The Theater Kids of Acapella and The Kings of Halloween. Some suggestions... Voiceplay videos... In The Hall of The Mountain King. Hellfire. Dragonborn Comes Skyrim. Halo Theme. Live.... Road Trip. Elvira. Chicken Song. Geoff Castellucci.... Rains of Castemere. Ghost Riders In The Sky. I See Fire. Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold (prequel to I See Fire). Way Down. Man of Constant Sorrow. Left to right in this video.... Geoff Castellucci - Bass, arrangements. J None - former member, baritone. Eli (like jelly) Jacobson - tenor, rock tenor, lighting, arrangements. Cesar De La Rosa - baritone, tenor. Layne Stein - beatboxer, baritone, arrangements, co-owner of Pattycake Productions with former member Tony Wakim. All of Pattycake videos are original to them. Disney themed with extremely talented actors and actresses. Tony and Layne created them all start to finish. My favorites.... Villains Haunted Mansion. Bump In The Night. Will of Oz. Villains Lair series (season 2 episode 5 will be released in January). Disney villains together in one place. I recommend watching Villains Haunted Mansion before watching Villains Lair.

    They could have sang the guitar solo and tried it but adding the violin was an artistic choice that was surprising and worked so well. They also used violin in their cover of Warriors which is fantastic. Layne is just so talented. He can sing, beatbox, arrange songs and play violin. This is pre-recorded as most music videos are. There wouldn’t be a balanced sound otherwise, especially without mics. And that would take away from the music video. They do sometimes add some effects in post production also that again, are artistic choices. I love their creativity and they continue to surprise and delight with every new cover. Thank you for the reaction! ❤

    They've talked about their process in their interviews. Someone - usually Geoff (bass) or Layne (beatbox) agrees to take on a particular project and produce it. The producer does the arrangement, records each voice exactly the way they want it, and sends each singer the whole thing plus their individual track. (Discussions/changes happen here, arranger gets final decision). Then each singer records their own part in their home studio and sends it in for the producer to assemble. THEN they meet and do the video (which the producer also defines and edits.) So yeah, video and audio are done separately. They used to be almost exclusively a touring group; that changed when covid hit. They still do live work, but they have families and it's no longer their focus.

    @@Savage-Reactions Stay tuned: Eli (tenor) has been increasingly involved over the last 2 years - the gorgeous lighting and all of the backdrops are his, and he's helped with editing, - and he did ALL of Creep. (Which, to me, was a stunner) In a recent interview Layne said that Eli has now agreed to produce every third video. Eli has a newborn at home - really new - so not certain when he'll start, but you've got more good stuff to look forward to.

    They don't perform together when they record; They're each in their own recording room, reacting to what other people have recorded. Generally the order is Layne for the vocal percussion, followed by Geoff for the base line, then the melody singers and Geoff for his basement lyrics. Then its arranged through a mixer to produce the final song.

    Yeah, any professional recorded product is prerecorded unless it says live. And even when live, the microphone audio is produced to different levels to balance voices and tones. Especially in acapella music. Else you'd just hear a mess of voices. Hell, even in choir 20 something years ago, during concerts, they they would always place 3 or 4 mics , and we'd have to do preconcert testing to gove the mixer time to balance things.

  • @jonadabtheunsightly
    @jonadabtheunsightly6 ай бұрын

    Yes, for practical reasons, pretty much all professional music videos ever made, from the very first music video until now, are lipsynched. The audio is recorded ahead of time, in a proper recording studio, and then once that's complete and mixed and everything, then the video is recorded. The major exceptions are concert videos, and stuff that rank beginners do on their own with no budget.

    I enjoyed your reaction- thanks! Voice Play is my favorite of the acapella groups as they are so multitalented doing all their own production, they are very theatrical and they really know how to rock out without instruments! Members of legendary band, 'Chicago', enjoyed this cover so much they reached out to Voice Play and invited them to sing two shows with them in New Jersey recently. You would love their covers of "Warriors", "Dream On" and "Seven Nation Army" as well (in that order as it is a post apocalyptic themed trio of songs). You would probably also enjoy their covers of "Whiskey In A Jar" and "In The Air Tonight". You may be a little confused at first when you see different members but as the other "Voice Players" (fans of Voice Play) have stated, J None was a former member that left to join the Navy but comes back frequently to sing with them when he is on military leave. The other frequently featured guests you will see that fill in are thought of like their extended family and you will enjoy them as well.

    When they film they are lip syncing. I mean…they are actually singing but the mic doesn’t matter. (Nothing else matters😉) They’ve already done the vocal tracks. Also, usually each background vocalist (whoever is not the main singer for that section) has 2 or 3 stacked tracks for a much fuller sound in the song. Learned that from a Geoff Castellucci interview.

  • @mityakiselev

    I mean, obviously it's lip-synced, they were recording this in a studio, and you're absolutely right, Geoff does eat the microphone while singing since it's the only way it can pick his voice up. He explained a lot of his techniques on his channel. Other stuff as well, like no way Layne plays the same violin in the video as he does in the recording, it's probably a cheap one as a prop. So what? They're nailing it and mind you they're usually doing the songs more justice than other acapella groups by keeping it in the same key, having more or less the same structure and arrangement, and so on, while completely making it their own. I love them and suggest watching their other covers ("Valhalla Calling", "The Dragonborn Comes", basically anything), as well as Geoff's solo covers ("Sixteen Tons", "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold", "Jack's Lament", and so on). If you want more fun acapella vocals, may I suggest the Bass Gang, they cover a lot of cool songs including Disney ("Arabian Nights", "Gaston", etc.) and popular bands (Panic! At The Disco - "Emperor's New Clothes" for example). You might even see a familiar face every now and then :)
