Gary Rossington, aka Prince Charming, who is 2nd from the left, had just bought himself a new car. He didn't have it long and wrapped it around an oak tree. Gary was Fd up on qualudes and alcohol and no telling what else. Gary was injured and caused a delay to the start of their tour. This song was about the excesses of drugs and alcohol and the toll and consequences it can have on someone. They were all guilty of it to some extent, though. Ironically, this album was released on October 17th, 1977, and 3 days later, the plane crash occurred. The music execs and the families scrambled and pulled the album cover, and removed the fire from it. Too bad it happened that way. They have another song called The Needle and the Spoon as well, also, Call Me The Breeze, which is great. Enjoyed your reaction, and thank you.

This song came out just before there plane Crash, and right after the crash the record company took the flames out of the album cover, so it was like he was seeing his own death when he wrote this.

This was the song we would blast out at 6am Saturday mornings in our all male dormitory at college in the early 80s.

Steve Gaines’ sister Cassie was part of the backing vocals and this is my favorite song for them. Really piercing and strong.

This song was released on their last album before the plane crash that killed Ronnie, Steve and Cassie, and severely injured the rest of The band and crew... I was so blessed to see them live several times when I was younger, there was nothing like those 3 lead guitars....may I suggest their song The Ballad of Curtis Lowe?,❤'d your reaction...side still hurting watching you having a laugh

I love the TV show Roadies and specifically the part where Ron White's character relates the story of the plane crash (in the fiction he was on the band's crew).

there's also a very key line in the 1st verse .... "oak tree in my way" (hint: that's the car crash that you finally figured out _despite_ missing that line) the song is about an incident involving one of their guitarists , who actually survived, but served as a bit of a wake-up call. >"better than _Freebird_ " kick yourself in the willy for me 🦶🙏

I always took "that smell" somewhat figuratively. The fetid smell of a life going wrong. But also sometimes literal. The smell of alcohol coming off of the breath and out of the sweat. I have smelled it on on a Denny's Restaraunt waitress. She was clean, and not even that close to me; I was seated on the far side, at a booth table. It's just linguring in the skin, in your pores when you are over indulging.

Yeah he is, just not to what you want him to. It’s first listen and he nailed the song organization and structure and listened closely to the music. He just didn’t follow the lyric train the first time. Give people a break eh mate?
