Who would have thought a little ice on a crossing would be a Match for a locomotive.. By the way, I am a long time subscriber.
Good old snow in the U P. I remember it well
reminds me of Dunkirk NY where both CSX and Norfolk & Southern go through. Used to live there until 2020. I have a grandson that is a Engineer on the Norfolk and Southern line. Works out of the Buffalo NY yard.
Thxs Jason for sticking around to see if the 40 would make it....Happy New Year....
I gotta say, I love seeing the old Conrail trains still running. I grew up with Conrail being the major train in Western Pennsylvania.
NE Minnesota. UP light, colder, less snow. Our county roads are like that all winter. Spent 4 years in college at Houghton.
Found your channel clicking through YT from other train channels. Subbed because of how much running you did to track down the train, plus it's the first time I've seen train wheels slip irl. Spent 13 years living beside the tracks, with 2 scheduled freight trains a day plus random switchers coming through sometimes, and I miss it.
Thanks from Arizona
See Jason! I told you that loosening a few bolts on those train tracks would stir up some pretty good action! (Huh??...What??... Just kidding🤣🤣). Can wait to see the real premiere! She looks like she is on the ground! Matt to the rescue! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I live in South Central Michigan. There used to be a rail line through my backyard. It branched off the now CN main line. The trestle crossing the river is gone but the foundation pillars are still there. Amazing history of Michigan rail lines of the past. Lived in Michigan all my life (now 70yrs old). Always loved the UP...been to many towns up there, Naubinway, Newberry and Paradise, just to name a few. Used to do motorcycling tours in the UP during the fall...absolutely gorgeous.
Love the old Conrail workhorse
You do a nice job sir that took a bit o patience to catch the action
Happy New Years Jason , stay warm
I had a good time, thanks Jason.
Nice too see a former conrail locomotive
have a good new year
Happy new year to you and family
Northwestern Massachusetts here. Family and I have three 4X4 Trucks together and after testing multiple tires we all like BFGOODRICH ALL TERRAIN T/A KO2, similar tread to your Avalanche. But to answer your question, snow storms under 3ft don't keep any of us in.....ice storms though.... That does change the game a little bit, thats when the chains come out, which only help a little bit. Ice storms are usually waited out unless in an emergency. Great post, safe travels.
Those close-up shots of the wheel slip tells the whole story...Ice on the tracks!
Very Good Jason.
It looks like some Conrail paint job It reminds me of years past when I worked for "Big Blue" or better known as Conraail! After being trained as a breakman in the seventies. It was my.home away from home as an"extra".
I just did something I've never done before. I sat here at my monitor for almost an hour watching a train in the snow. Why? It was fascinating. Thanks for the treat. I might just stop by again and see what else Jason has to show us.

I'm in New Jersey. We do get snow and I'm old enough that I learned to drive when they used to plow the roads and put cinders and/or sand on them, so I can deal with it. Now they salt brine before it starts to snow, then plow and salt and plow and salt and salt and salt so you can feel your truck dissolving under your feet as you drive!

I'm in Grand Rapids Michigan and my BF Goodriches love the snow. Love your videos Jason.
Ice will build up in the flangeway and can definitely derail a locomotive. We kept our flangeways cleaned out by modifying the tines on a Mantis garden tiller to fit and running that through. Then, we blew out the debris/dirt with a backpack blower. When the ice would still cause problems, we would spread calcium alongside the rails. It's usually standard procedure to attempt to cut the flangeways open with a single locomotive at known problem crossings.
Sounds like the Engineer jacked it up a notch...
Also, like I tell JT, always carry a "Notch 8 Please" sign. It works every time.
Kool - I could see the lock & chain swinging back & forth on the switch stand (~45:40).
You folks are so lucky to have trains. A few years ago most of our tracks were removed and turned into walking trails

I am subscribed and I love watching your videos
Jacksonville, Florida, here. We had about half an inch of snow here on December 23, 1989. Shut the city down for two days. Most of the bridges were closed. I call it the Great Blizzard of '89! (You snow people can laugh if you want.) It's not unusual to get flurries in north Florida every few years, but measurable amounts on the ground are rare. I remember back in the Seventies there was about an inch at Tallahassee and a dusting on the ground here in Jax. The news announced it was the first time in record-keeping there was snow on the ground of all fifty states!

That snow fell in Miami also in Jan, 1977. Reached a far South as Cutler Ridge but not to Homestead. It will be 45 years ago on the 19th.
Great video Jason. Have a happy New Year.
The mechanics of locomotion. If the engine can't get dry sand onto the bare tracks, even a little ice and snow will make it impossible to get a grip. Its not how deep the snow is, it's just the fact that it's there stopping the sand in between the track and the wheel.
Awesome video
Maybe that old conrail locomotive finally gave up!
Happy NewYear from Chicago Jason
Hi Jason asselin
Im from South Carolina. I can drive in the snow and ice. Done it for years. Former trucker and i have actually picked up a load of board right out of the LP saw mill in the snow and ice. Happy new year to you Jason. Oh yeah, im subscribed to you for about two years now.
Maybe get a radio scanner to pick up the train freqs. you can monitor where the trains go.
I use to live in "GRANNIS ARKANSAS" "1979-1980" and while we didn't have "CONRAIL" then (I don't know what it is today). Back then the main and only TRAINS we had then was "K.C.S" (KANSAS CITY SOUTHERN). Every once in a while we would also see a: "BURLINGTON NORTHERN". That was way back before "BURLINGTON NORTHERN" and "SANTA FE" merged. And you better believe 3-feet of snow there was not uncommon. And some of us kids would always go down to the TRACK and watch the TRAINS go by (I was the biggest watch dog of em). And in WINTERTIME, I would go down (no TRAINS coming of course) and knock SNOW AND ICE off the TRACKS especially at the 2 crossings there. And I always waved at the TRAINS as they went by "HAPPILY".
Hey Jason love to see your vvideos I looks like.a new year a day away hope you and your family the best#!!
Evidently the highway traffic can pack down the snow and ice at the grade crossings in the flangeways. Loaded semi trucks and dump trucks could pack it in tight during the days. Then the night freeze could make the ice sturdy. If lake ice can support semis, I could see that packed ice lifting a train car enough to derail. The locomotive wheels might melt a thin layer making very slippery water on hard ice - loss of traction as you showed the slipping drive wheels - might not lift a locomotive much, but a small lift would remove traction. I think the raspy-hissing noise you mentioned at the grade crossing (noticeable when the wheels on flatcars crossed) may have been from sand that the highway trucks spread. Nice street running in Iron Mountain - love it.
It may have been boring to some, but I learned that crossings, if iced, can cause problems. I never worked trains in snow before.
A few years ago I took a bike trip from Texas to that country on my Harley. I rode on US 2 from Mackinaw to Escanaba before heading south back towards Texas. Very pretty country in that area. I rode it in September when the weather was really nice.

Combination ice and snow made tracks slick
Enjoyed your vid!!! First time watcher... A few wks ago I was sitting eating dinner by Lake Erie.. in WNY... Was searching YT to find something to keep me company and came across a train vid...As I was listening the guy who was filming said where he was... was less than 4 miles from where I was sitting!!! It wasn’t live... but guess he was from my area.... or close to it.... What are the chances??!! As you can see I’m from WNY...I have 4wd... and still don’t like driving in the snow!!! Stay safe!!!
amazing just how strong the ice is that gets packed into the track spacings ! In my area , a train travels on the center of a street, then turns to a clearing. At the turn off the road allowance this ice build up caused the locomotive to raise off the rails and continue STRAIGHT even though the track turned off. My poor mother , in her car was waiting for clearance btw the snow banks and train when this occurred ! Her comments were ...THE TRAIN CHASED ME UP THE ROAD she reversed away in time, The train reversed and the Ice clearing began. Your video was exactly what happened to her. Keep them coming !
Happy new year Jason.

The ELS rails are definitely not in good condition, but they are still better than the ND&W
in romania it's the same when it's the winter season I like it when it starts to snow as if the city is changing
Oh, I can remember standing out in the snow for a couple hours on a cold Saturday morning waiting for a branchline train to show up at a crossing. This was in the Baltimore area during the later 1960s when in my teens. The train usually would be by around 8:30am but that chilly, snowy morning it didn't show up until about 11:00am. Yeah, I know about those cold feet from train watching. The train crew ended up having a bad day because they derailed the caboose at a crossing farther up the line (train was always pushed caboose first). Someone had dumped debris on the track and the snow disguised it as just being a snowbank from roadway plows.
Excellent catch, Jason. Real life, short line winter railroading going on right there. Appreciative as always for you getting out there in some cold temps to film this stuff for us. But especially liked the back and forth you had with one of the ELS support personnel, a nice touch on both of you guys. And it sounds like they watch the films you make of their railroad. Great stuff. Happy New Year to you and yours!

There is a triple "La Nina" coming this winter, hope y'alls prepared in Yooperland, bodacious amounts of snow predicted, ELS better have that wedge plow ready!
Wonder how much weight all the snow & ice add to that scrap metal.
Nebraska - I never have to drive on snow at least in my small city or the interstate. It usually melts or gets run over by traffic or is plowed before I get out on the road. I try to manage stuff so I never have to go to the market for example in a snow storm - risk management.

That was the longest train video I’ve watched and the most snow I’ve seen in many years. I appreciate your work for two days recording this. I wonder how the railroad feels about the video. I’m happy without the snow in South Carolina except for the small amount we get here; it’s always exciting to get an inch or less every few years as long as it goes away! You are welcome to the snow in Michigan. I had enough when I lived in Wisconsin 60 years ago. I would push the subscribe button but it would only unsubscribe me and I would miss all the fun.

That's funny! 😂 Because Fahrenheit doesn't make sense to me at all. Celsius makes sense. Water boils at 100 and freezes at zero. Any where in-between can be easily therefore compared
For you locomotive nerds out there...The blue ELS 402 is a GP 38, the one in old BNSF colors # ELS 503 is an SD40-2.
This is interesting, even trains have snow problems!
The snow is awesome, and I live in Omaha Nebraska and yes I could drive on those roads.
thanks for sharing
I grew up in New England and learned to drive in snow, but moved to Jacksonville in '93 so it's cool to see thx for the video.
You tires are kinda noisy. Ah the sweet sound of the EMD 645 Diesel engine. Nice music. Happy New Year.
I live in Arkansas, but we lived in the UP when I was 5-7 and again in the early 90s. I have driven in weather like that many times. Here we get snow about once every 3 or 4 years, and I'm the one that drives when nobody else will. If I got back up there I'd have to get a little practice...
Ice in the flange way. Cars compact it into the flange way, plus thawing and freezing. Engine rides up on top of the ice. I saw this happen where a snowmobile trail crossed the tracks. The snowmobiles packed down the snow and it iced up causing the next train to come along and ride up on top of the snow/ice and derail.

@@coldblue9mm Oh boy. You're taxing my memory since it was long ago, probably 20+ years. I do recall it was a minor derailment. The engine came off the tracks at slow speed and remained upright. But it was the 1st example I recall reading about how ice can lift a huge engine right off the tracks. Ice not only sinks ships but also can derail trains. Amazing. Sorry I can't give details.
Thanks for video,Jason.👍👍👍👍👍 New to the channel 😺🐺🤗
Southern by birth and inclination. Snow is rather rare here and many if not most have never driven in snow.

Been subscribed since I first saw you... Absolutely love your videos... 2022, will bring interesting railroad videos/live cameras to me daily... Apartment hunting... Looking for a place very near the tracks... That weird sound as the rail cars trucks passed over the road crossing was ice scraping on the wheels. You only heard it as the wheels were crossing the road, not before or after.

I'll just walk up and see if Jason has a snack for me!
Yes we get snow here in Ohio but they can't drive in snow
That crew was smart to take the front engine to test the rails. One engine derailment is better than the whole train. They're also smart for taking the equipment to clean the rails off to avoid that whole situation. I'm from ny so driving in snow isn't a bother at all. People just need to learn how to do it and take time. Good on them for being smart tho.
