    What an interesting turn of fortune. Apparently you have a hull with ice breaking capabilities. I sispect your draught will be a bit deep, which will affect whether you can actually get to some parts of the waterways. Not only does Bex deserve a break sometimes, she might be working on a sainthood.

    Bloody good news guys/gals. In a strange way this will all be a blessing. You will now sort the bilges out, have a nice dry interior, painted and sealed. Make good access to the bilge for the future and peace of mind. Funny how things work out sometimes. Keep the faith and you will have a mighty fine boat with good resale value if you ever sell. These videos will be a great help for any future sale. Merry Xmas. Andy UK

    Great news about the hull bottom for a change. Even if you had a survey at beginning, they probably would not have found the rust in the bilge due to the floor covering. Also explains why you don't appear to have much ballast as its already heavy. Keep well and have a happier Christmas. well done both of you.

    Thanks for another great video, I really enjoy watching your determined hard work and progress. Now you know there is such a substantial thickness of steel you could expand your hammer collection to include a chipping hammer (one with a pointed end and a coiled wire handle - not expensive). Chipping hammers are great for whacking rusty surfaces with as they can make the stuck down layers of rust lift off more cleanly. Pop some ear defenders on and let rip with no worries about making little spouts of water appear. Chipping , either with a hammer, needle gun or SDS drill is a most effective way of getting back to good steel more quickly. I wouldn't bother putting the majority of the ballest back - it can trap dampness next to the steel. Great to see that your thickness tester is consistent - I'm going to save up for one. Very best wishes

    Hey, Bex was just looking around the boat the day after we purchased her and found a board that lifted out that hid the leak under the shower, the only access to that area too was through a door that on the day was locked and we were told was just a cupboard , we were both just a bit excited so didn't think much off it :( I think most boats probably have rust there really and im not sure how much of a worrying thing it actually is, we've been told by other boaters that you don't even really need to treat it, but then we just wanted to do everything properly to save any future problems, see you guys have been blogging too, will have a watch through, good luck with your Adventure:)

I think you’re on the right track tho, once you get the inside bottom scraped, brushed and painted, you’ll rest easier onboard and internal leaks like the water tank won’t be as traumatic because you know the bottom is sound.

    Hi another good vlog just thought I might say that you should always grind the metal you are testing back to bright steel or you will get a wrong reading your reading of 13.5 would be the correct 12.5 if you had ground the metal clean they must have put this in the instructions of the kit.I have said all along that this was a good boat overplated to a very good standard are you going to stop worrying now and get on with the light renovation that you said you were going to do at the beginning 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁 p.s.you can't count the two plates as one when you determine the thickness of the base plate

    I'm having problems viewing your vlogs on my smart TV. Every 30 seconds it tells me it's loading then shows me a few seconds of the vlog before it starts loading again. I have only experienced this on one other channel "Our Narrowboat Quest ". It could be that my smart TV is not as smart as it should be or a different format it doesn't recognise. I am wondering about the 'belly-buttons'. I can understand that these were used to weld the Over-plate in places to the old hull. I am just thinking of a few other checks and precautions to take. If you have had a persistent water leak is there a chance there could be water now between the plates. Check if there is any areas of the inner plate that is bowing upwards, this could be a sign that rust is in there and expanding forcing a gap. The thinner plate (8mm) will flex upwards more than the 12mm will flex down. If no such bowing all well and good, seal the 'Bellybuttons with something, say resin or molten lead if you feel up to it, or even tar/pitch so that any further leaks can not let water pass. When they welded the holes hopefully they did a full all round seam weld to seal it, just the fact you had a water leak and are removing lots of rust from in the buttons you want to ensure they are still sealed for the future. All the very best and safe cruising.

    Thanks so much for the great advice, yes it does seam like the leak could have been there for a long long time as there was no access to any inspection hatches...seams mad, thankfully so far the 8mm base looks really flat and in great condition, yes we definitely wouldn't want any future water getting in, thanks so much agin and Merry Christmas:)

    I'm surprised your boat was over plated when you already had 8mm baseplate. Most new boats start with 10mm. I wouldn't think you will need any additional ballast as your boat sits veery low in the water and may be a problem with grounding when water levels are low in the canals

  • @TheNomadicCrobot

    @TheNomadicCrobot

    That’s an interesting theory actually as we did get stuck a few times on the way back from buying the boat. I think the idea of it was so that the boat would handle better when it went to sea, hopefully we won’t be affected to much when we hit the canals next year, thanks Geoff :)

    8mm means 2mm has been lost. Thats 20% and in some places it may be 30 or 40% with pits. Not sure what is allowed before overplating is recommended but its probably in the 30-40% range
