They are already doing this in a way. These retro collections are coming packed with things like a 3D rendered arcade cabinet, which bloats what would be like a 20-200 MB emulator and files, to 20 GB because of 4K 3D files.

For me I am a park ranger who works for the National Park Service. I constantly move around from park to park to park with a high likelihood that there will be no reliable access to internet. This is why I collect physical. I will mention I don’t hold onto the cases, which are in longterm storage in a trusted family member’s home. But being able to keep 400+ films on me in a small form factor and I know will always be there for me. Is something that I find incredibly valuable. While I have slowed down in my collecting habits and are more selectful in what I own and buy. I still have this massive library of films I can watch in the middle of absolute nowhere, which is why the Bestbuy news is so heartbreaking for me.

I've done decided when physical dissapears, I will no longer purchase games. Sure I'll miss out on a bunch of great games but there's so many games I've haven't played over the last 40 years of gaming, so many in fact I'll never be able to play them in my lifetime and that's ok.

A fantastic topic, with fantastic points as to why physical will always be better than digital/streaming. I’m all about having ownership for things I pay for, rather than paying for “renting” items that ultimately will never be mine to actually keep. Awesome job again highlighting this topic man!

One of the issues is them editing movies on the streaming services. Like Disney editing an iconic line in adventures in babysitting cause she said a naughty word. Censored media is something I don't like. If they are going to do that then give me both choices and let me decide which to watch. Like back in the day you could buy a CD that was edited or the one with the Parental Advisory sticker.

Convenience doesn't mean happier. Why is it that we live in a far more unhappy culture nowadays. On paper we should be happier. But nope. With the loss of video rental stores and arcades, or going to cut down a Christmas tree for example, we lost the bond of excitement we shared with loved ones. We weren't hardwired to be catered to in that way. Us as humans were wired to be going through experiences together. Person to person. Even if it's "harder" to drive to town to get a video or to get that Christmas tree or getting that toy from the toy store...hey those were the good ol times. Let's keep that spirit alive and support small businesses everyone.

Amazing video. After seeing what happened with the PS3/Vita store, I decided then and there that I'm good with newer video game consoles after PS5. There's way too many older video games that I have yet to explore. If you think about it, it's a couple of lifetimes worth of video games out there just waiting to be played. All on physical-only consoles. At the end of the day, these companies will make way more money moving into the digital space and tightly controlling their media. That's their prerogative. We as the consumer just need to be better informed and either be OK with it, or walk a hybridized physical/digital/emulation/piracy path with our gaming.

This was a really great breakdown and a good contrast in video style to some of the more alarmist videos I've seen discussing this topic. For me, availability and ownership are the two biggest issues, and really two sides of the same coin. As was mentioned in other comments, I don't think a lot of people even realize when you "purchase" digital content, you're really only purchasing a license to access that content, which can be revoked at any time for any reason.

Sorry but I'm not worried. You can literally mod and jailbreak your systems and thus create your own digital backups with patches and DLC included. At this point if people don't want to do this, they're just going to keep losing expecting these companies to act in good faith. Plus it keeps the rooms clean with only the consoles beings there. Just on my OG Xbox alone I have nearly 500 games installed on the hard drive (swapped the original 8GB for a 2TB) and it's just so comfortable to boot up the console, sit down and pick a game from a menu to play it exactly like it would from a disc. I can't imagine having 500 game cases on massive shelf, leave alone more than that if we count my other consoles.

Streaming is just a rip off these companies figured out a way to manipulate people into paying for the same product multiple times (with movies and music) I am a huge movie guy I literally have over 1000 movies across DVD Blu-ray and a 4K Blu-ray. My movie collection is pretty much complete I may be by about 5 to 10 movies a year now, what people don’t realize is that if they don’t spend the money on all the services like Netflix Hulu Amazon HBO Disney and on and on their movie collection would be complete in like 3 to 5 years and I’ll never have to pay for streaming again. It’s also insane people buy these extremely nice TVs an amazing sound set ups and then a stream on Netflix instead of popping in a negative 4K disc it’s insane. The younger generation is truly dumb.

Missouri is 38th in rank (1 = fastest, 50 slowest) in the country and it's legit nigh impossible to have people understood that even in 2023 it can be a chore to so much as stream content. We've stopped watching movies that are chopped to bits with buffering. Playing online? Some days it sorta works, others, forget it.

A digital only release at the start. After all the DLCs, and patches have been released. A physical disc release at a later date. This includes set up on a private server, and LAN for multiplayer. A lower print run than commonly done for pre-launch physical media. These physical releases could also be packaged with booklets. There has always been demand for traditional game packaging. These can be produced with less manufactured pieces than that of collector editions. People want physical media that is a preservation of data. What people don't want is a physical key necessary to play the games they purchased. Yet, continues to require it each and every time these games are played. Which, needs the internet to access games that shouldn't need additional data to run.

They say you don't own physical media either. But If I can pop a CD, DVD or Blu-ray into my computer, rip it with some free software and have access to the non-DRM-locked data on the disc; I own it 100% whether it's legal or not. If they stop doing physical media, then I'm just going to stay with rentals, or I will switch to free ad-supported streaming. I will NOT pay for something that they can just take away whenever they feel like and leave me with nothing. How is that not theft? If they want to be unethical, I can be unethical too.

Easy fix: Back to physical media. Yes, they can be damaged too, but noone but yourself can dedice what you want to with it, nobody that can just easily pull if from you out of a digital store or force updates you maybe never wanted and such. Not to mention that for an installment, physical media often requires way less Harddisc Space than a digital only one. In my opinion, physical media always has beaten digital media in terms of comfortable advantages.

This is definitely a big hot button topic right now and it shows in the views just how many people are passionate about physical media. This really resonates with us because we love our collection and I've always hated the statement "You will own nothing and be happy" because it doesn't speak to me either. Great video buddy and I'm not sure if there is any truth to this but I have heard rumbling about Special Reserve Games closing up shop....

It is unfortunately inevitable that physical media will stop being developed for games through companies like Microsoft and Sony and the same goes for movies and TV shows on Blu-ray and DVD. If you're the type who enjoys having a collection of physical media around, the best to do concerning physical media is to buy what games, movies, and TV shows that are most important to you while they're still easy to grab. There's no telling how the price of physical media might adjust years in the future or how rare it'll be to come across certain discs. Also, not having any physical media means you might be subscribed to a few streaming services and that sort of money can surely add up over time. Personally, I've collected many games, DVDs, and Blu-rays over the years and there are many more other ones I still need to buy. Just last night i purchased the entire series of Game of Thrones on Blu-ray and House of the Dragon. I love those shows lol

Visualization helps a lot. Imagine telling people you have a collection of 20000 games, and when they come checking it out it's a bunch of names in a list on a device. "That sounds like money" Money can be exchanged for goods and services. You can't exchange digital videogames for goods and services. You own nothing.

Great video! I think the industry will go to all digital eventually, even if the majority of people don't want them too. We can already see it happening with the latest physical releases that you can't even play the game from the disc. Either the game is not complete or is missing large chuncks of the game unless you download the day one patches / updates. It's very sad to see as an avid collector myself.

I can see some niche audience with decreased production. It just won’t be as huge of an audience for it overall. As it is, streaming is pretty much becoming like a mixture of Cable TV and rental stores used to be. Cable and Broadcast TV censored or broadcast a limited selection for movies in the day. I’m kind of in a similar camp as rural even as a suburban dweller, mostly because I don’t care for modern games, because there’s simply so many games now where I just am occupied with those games from PS3 and before, and unless some great disaster like a flood or earthquake destroys my console and discs? They will have a retro game console where I can just play the games I used to know again.

Totally agree, and the rabbit hole goes even deeper... many people think their digital data is eternal, but unless you back up your games that is far from truth, and if you do that you need to expense extra in them (consoles don't have too much memory). The servers which holds the games are not free, they costs money to companies, meaning they will dissappear someday when the company thinks they are not profitabke anymore (that happened even with some current generation games like god wars in switch). Knowing that, if physical format dissapears someday, withe the excuse of being too expensive for companies, you should expect 100% the dissapearance of digital format next with the same argument, being exchanged by the stream format which is just a rental

Just the way your tv processes the signal it's receiving is different. And if you are like me and spent a shit load on a TV and surround to truly have a home theater experience than it's crazy to be streaming anything. Dark levels especially look janky when streaming

But the fact that you can get so many indie physical switch games, which did not seem to be a thing when I first got into switch (it was after pokemon sword and shield had been out for a while) does bring hope, that we might be able to hold on to some physical even if we lose game stores for a time. Keep in mind, this is after they said they couldn't change my password and whatnot. Edit: Just like you, I put a lot of money into digital media and I believe, I told them that I would sue them because I'm not losing everything I bought and they should have better ways of retrieving people's accounts.

Imagine if the only way you could play Sonic was on dial up through the Sega channel. Sega lost the console wars, Dreamcast is done. All the servers are gone and all of the history of Sega is gone. Subscriptions and cloud saves all wiped out. Think about how dumb digital media services being the only option are. The entire Toy Story movie would not exist without a woman having backed it up. When a servers data gets corrupted or hacked, everyone suffers together. Some things are also better as couch co-op! Why do I need the Internet for single player or local play? If they can't force subscriptions or microtransactions they don't give a fuck about you. This is where we are at as gamers now.

I wish more games were finished for physical format, or they waited to release the disc version after most of the “game breaking bugs” were fixed. A lot of games require massive downloaded updates that aren’t preserved to disc. One can imagine a new media format that was half read-only and half rewriteable (like a CD-R or flash drive) which could be updated with the patches and DLC. It would also be cool if more indies could get bundled together for preservation on commercial discs.

Well on one hand I get the 'why'. When was the last time you popped in a DVD or a Blu-ray to actually watch something? People usually watch by streaming it either through paid or pirated means. It reduces the amount of e-waste. It brings in more space for other things. The only benefit of actually having a copy of a disc is the extra features or just owning a copy in general. On the other hand, the more things that go digital the harder it is to actually 'own' a copy. You now pay for a server for a company to hold your 'data/copy'. You have accounts, and billing info, and subscriptions. Once those are gone or you can't pay for said services you no longer 'own' anything, it's just leased (however you never really 'own' anything but that's another discussion). Same thing applies to games. You have to be a fan to have a physical copy nowadays otherwise it's kinda of a waste and creates clutter. Is it good to go all digital? No but it is a fantastic backup option. It really does depend on how many people care about it as well. Some people still have VHS tapes and are fine with that so 🤷🏽‍♂️ On the side note, the PS3 PSN added an additional security layer to access your content. Once you create a Device Setup Password (which acts as a two step verification) then you’ll be able to access your content again.

A lot of the honus is on the mainstream consumer as well. They prefer convenience over quality and permanence. Would they seek an an independent game store to buy anything or just grab it digitally or off Amazon if they do want a physical? We all will have to make an effort if we really want physical games to stay alive. This is why only indie and niche titles come with full color manuals, the entire game on the disc, and extras in the box. Yet people will complain about pricing still. The more companies that stop producing physicals, the more expensive it will be for smaller companies to publish physicals.
