So to summarise: Sleep in an empty room on a hard bed at 10pm reflecting on the positives of the day, there, saved you 9 minutes of your life, and that's my good deed I can sleep on tonight.

To whoever is kind enough to read this - THANK YOU! - I’ve been living out of my car now for the last two years. I do alright as far as sleep goes but nonetheless I am six feet tall and the back seat which is my bed only measures about four and a half feet. I never knew how often I stretch my legs during sleep until I began this ordeal. Now, when I want to stretch during sleep I wake up because I have to consciously shift my legs to the side and position myself in an awkward way that is not comfortable. I figure this happens about every hour to hour and a half. My twelve year old dog sleeps in the front seat. I think the whole ordeal is difficult on the both of us because cars are made of metal after all, even the skeletons of the seats are metal. Not to mention the traffic noise and light pollution. I chose this life because it’s honestly better than living in the hell of being surrounded by all the nasty, abusive people I once associated with. Having a place to call your own where you can cook, clean, bathe and sleep is taken for granted by so many. I’m super thankful for my car because the last two winters have been cold in Virginia. I’m looking forward to the day when I can have a hardwood floor to sleep and meditate on again. Sending all my love to those in impoverished situations and also to those who live free and easy. We all have to learn to get along and help one another. Additionally, I’m not writing this for sympathy nor do I want anyone to feel sorry for us. Just know that sharing my story isn’t easy and that I’m laying my heart out for you to do so. OM ABOGYA. Stay blessed. You are loved. ✌️🙏🏻❤️😘

Bless you friend - we all need reminding sometimes of how very fortunate we all are instead of just craving more. May good things come your way - let us know how you are doing - it's not a case of feeling sorry for you- all paths are different and many have passed your way including my own son - just interest in knowing how fellow human beings are doing in this journey through life.

As a Firefighter Getting to sleep, especially after a critical call was a struggle until I realized that getting enough sleep is as important to your safety and performance as training. As I closed my eyes I would tell myself "the only thing of importance at this moment is sleep and recharging my body and mind. Nothing else matters." If something popped in to my brain that kept my mind busy I would consciously repeat that mantra and it worked quite well.

@Viswa Prasanna Doing the right thing and helping is best of humanity no matter who you are and not just being firefighters. Even the people who clean the sewers(people shit) i bet you never think about them or having respect even if they do one of the most important things to keep the city running properly. Go to hospital and see how some Doctors works 24 hours

@Fox Sky Man, the only thing that I'm saying is that while EVERYBODY has flaws, the one group of people that I respect above all are firefighters. A lot of them are volunteers. Men and women who live and work in our communities. They race into burning buildings to save people they don't even know. That's their JOB. So my generalization is that they are the best of us. They are the best of humanity. That's it. If you find that to be objectionable, then I don't think we'd get along very well. But, you know, respect nonetheless.

Monk uses mat so they don't procrastinate in that later morning, teach us not to use luxury bed ( not for all people) 3. consistent sleep time 4. I tried for many years to stop my mind so that I could sleep. Then I found out that I could think about something, and I could fall asleep by thinking only of this idea. I still use this method 35 years later, it's a concept that works for me. I have a story, but not something too exciting.. My way of falling asleep is to go to this story every night, I can elaborate on it but not too much. I don't want to start thinking about other things, so I focus only on this story every night. I think it can work for many people. Clear your mind of your stuff, think about historic or science related, whatever you're interested in so that you can focus every night without being stressed. Even if you're stressed, it's worth it to do this kind of meditation - a story that you can go back to every night. It's calming and soothing. Try it!

    1. Lights out at 10 pm. 2. Use the bedroom only for its intended purpose. 3. Keep your bedroom clean & tidy (uncluttered). 4. Sleep low to the ground. Don't use a highly luxurious bed/mattress. 5. Reflect on the good deeds that you have done. Have gratitude even for the smallest things. Sleep in the Sea of Merit. Your last thought before sleeping is automatically the first thought after waking up. P.S. If can't think of any good deeds that you have done for the day/week/year then, start doing one today.

Great advice ...when I left home ..my mom .. expressed one thing ..one gem ...she said .."mijo please rest when you can ..if you have time use that time to rest stay off your feet"..I was young I really was not sure how to used that advice ...you see my mom raised 11 children..I was like in her last group of kids ...my oldest brother was in Vietnam my youngest brother was in diapers..how I knew her advice was good..it came from mom..I look at your advice..it came from a monk.. awesome 🙂..I am 60 ..I still go to work ..but I pray often ..I find sleep ..living in harmony with sun and moon as a child of mother earth...peace .

This is so important that we often tend to forget just how important this really is. Decluttering our life also means decluttering our minds. Bedroom just for sleep is just that, no clutter, nothing to distract, just sleep and nothing else. Same with everything else in our life. Does your house resemble hoarding? Time to declutter. The thing is - our mind takes in all of those impressions around us and we become stressed even though we might feel perfectly okay. I decluttered my home to the level that my friends wondered where to sit, I gave them one chair - nothing else. I have decluttered everything down to what I actually use instead of nice to have. It forces me to take action - bored? Well there's lots of stuff to do in the yard, friends to visit, work to do. When I go to sleep I don't have 1000s of things around me to make my mind race, but as in the video I try to end the day on a good note. Decluttering life is decluttering our minds, and a rested mind is a powerful one.

Thanks, good stuff. I find a good way to sleep is to think of a time or day in your life and try to remember every detail you can about that day/time like what you did, how you felt, who you were with, the weather, what you eat, just as much as you can remember.

I agree that a consistent sleeping time, and an organized environment will help falling asleep easier and faster. I also agree that practicing gratitude before bed time is conducive to falling sleep. Also, celebrate your successes for that day will help falling asleep faster. I sleep on a bed and wake up the same time each day although I like to sleep in. I think it's also depends on personalities because certain people are heavy sleepers.

I learned this technic years ago, and I implayed on different aktivities. I was struggling about reading part of my all classes, and I was able to easly get discracted. When I learned this technic, I set a chair with a reading light, somewhere in the house that I never use for anything. I start to go there and start to read and do nothing else. In time when I was sitting on that chair even for no reason, I was just grabbing a book and read it...

1 &3 are basic sleep hygene, which i lerned from my GP when i had a period of grief causing sleepless nights. what most people sleep in tends to be cultral, but going to bed and getting up the same time superseeds it. 4 was the one i found most surprising, in my faith we think about all the good things that we have had, seen or experianced during the day and thank God for those before bed, which also works, but is a totally diferent focus.

HEAR MR OUT! Once I got into a toxic relationship and since then I've been waking up tired. Affected me physically and mentally. Girl drained me dry! I have had relationships where I would wake up motivated and fresh (usually that's how I would wake up when not even in relationship), but soon as I tried to put up with a toxic relationship, I messed up everything. I guess most people reading my comment are probably (been through this phase) adults or even married but if you are a young person, PLEASE TAKE MY ADVICE. Run and never look back if you are in a toxic relationship. Do not think about the pleasure you getting from your partner, since pleasure creates false feelings and emotions of love. Now we can do nothing about it, but for our kids, the first lesson I would teach them is never to get into a toxic relationship. Well my Dad tried to get me off the hook (looks like a vicious cycle) and I even tried to end our relation well on time, but I was weak. She started playing that emotional card, I felt sorry for her. Maybe she really wanted to build a good relationship (if that's the case I woldn't be single), but if it's not good for you, it's not good. You are your priority. Now me being naive, provided good pleasure, it wasn't as easy for me to let go. Maybe if I had taken the move when I was trying to, I wouldn't be in such condition. I pray that such vicious women doesn't come in someone's life.

@JB Wentworthe So true. No matter where you are or how much you have, without family or friends to share it with, it's all meaningless. As an example; think back to a fond memory of a family holiday and imagine yourself going back to the same time and place but alone. Whenever I try this, it all just seems so hollow. It is clearly not the place, the luxuries, the trips nor any theme park rides that I really enjoyed, but spending time with loved ones that gave the moment its meaning.

One does ask though, is it the best of living to pare down to hard scrabble poverty ? I've had some wonderful food in beautiful restaurants dressed with fresh flower bouquets, linen and sparkling silverware and slept on feather beds in 5 star hotels with views of snow capped mountains. Was it worth the work hours used to earn the money ? They are some of my treasured memories. Yes, there are other happy times spent on a bench with a dear friend eating tuna fish sandwiches. What would be the "best" experience ? The most beautiful places, be they mountain views or dining rooms and to be with a true friend. Had I to choose ? To be anywhere with a true friend.

Hi Nick, thanks for sharing your lessons. Mate I have trouble quitening my mind at time to sleep and turn off. My main problem is I’m always worrying about daily bills 💸 to support my family and house mortgage. I know these things are normal expense’s. Can you please help me with a breathing exercise or a mantra meditation/ visualisation that I can practice. To prevent me from reflecting negative reviews thanks again for your help I’m very grateful 🥲 I will start trying to reflect good thoughts before sleeping 😴

I make a written inventory of my day in bed before sleeping. I always try to balance it between positive and negative aspects of that day - areas I need or would like to improve; areas of success, compassion, kindness and helpfulness. But I must say that it tends to be the negative that sticks harder. I fall asleep quickly but tend to wake up around 3.00 - 4.00 am most days so something isn't working. I like the idea of positive reflection so I'm going to change my inventory keeping to have more of an emphasis on that positivity. Thank you for this video. Blessings to all.

I've recently started talking to God before I sleep. I thank God for everything that day, I don't care if I've had the worst day of my life I still thank God for it. I ask him when its something bad if he could help me not struggle with it so bad the next time. I forgive myself for feeling the way that I felt, I also ask God to help me forgive what needs to be forgiven, what needs to be for got to be forgotten, and what needs to be let go of to allow it to drift away with him when he leaves me that night for sleep. I also ask him to burn what needs to be burnt so I can rebuild what needs to be rebuilt. I've done this for a few weeks now naturally. I've felt so much better like I can live day by day and no matter how bad the day is I can still have a different day tomorrow because I don't carry the Guilt over to the next day. I even started going through my childhood with some of the trauma I've had and I have forgiven that and let go of it in the presence of God. So, during the time it takes me to fall asleep I'm praying to God and just hanging out with him. Thanking him and being grateful for everything I have. We're just hitchhikers here on the planet so thinking of it that way I can not become attached to anything because where I'm going next I can't take it with me anyway. But I still thank him for making me comfortable with everything I have.

Athletes are doing this same type of thing with music now. I had a running coach who told me to pick out a song that I'd have to go out of my way to hear but was high energy and listen to it about 30 minutes before I planned on running and listen to it every time before a run. After so long my mind began to associate that song with running and really got me going. Still to this day if I listen to it I get so amped up to go for a run. The mind is a powerful thing.
