The critics were merciless with this film when it debuted, in part (they said) because of Jean Seberg's "bad acting". Well, for a high school girl with virtually zero stage or acting training, I think she performs magnificently! She went on to be one of the best actresses of all time, and high atop my own list of greatest screen beauties. It's a tragedy her life and career were cut short due to the personal problems she couldn't surmount. An angel indeed.

To me it seems like she was supposed to play Joan as a bit of a goof. Whicht, to me, fits perfectly with everything we know about her.

Even this short clip has a lot of inaccurate stuff. The movie has Joan of Arc describing herself as a "soldier" who "fights", but at her trial she said bluntly that she didn't fight, which is also confirmed by eyewitness accounts. She didn't have a modern crewcut : her hair wasn't nearly that short and would not have been in that style. The dialogue in this clip is also fictional, only very loosely based on the eyewitness descriptions of her first meeting with Charles VII.

Perhaps this is because the movie is based on A PLAY from 1923 by George Bernard Shaw. Plays are like ANY artform - not strictly biographical, rather a sketch, an interpretation, and in this way they have artistic license - as does the film maker. Do your research - then criticize.

@@chrisbaerart Shaw claimed his play was historically accurate (read his introduction for the script) and people routinely interpret that play and its derivative movies to be accurate, therefore the inaccuracies need to be pointed out. Freedom of expression is a two-way street: if scriptwriters can use a "personal interpretation" that fictionalizes a real person's life, I have the right to give my own personal interpretation by criticizing them for that.

My understanding about Joan's status as a soldier is that she said at her trial she had never personally killed anyone, but she was on the battlefield as a standard-bearer, to boost morale and help lead troops, which was a very dangerous position, so she was still fighting in a sense. Joan was wounded several times in her career.
