@ Lee - the country is "the Netherlands" (Nederlands, in Dutch) _because_ it is "the low lands", so yes, it's the same as "nether regions", meaning "down there", just not the same down there!

I own the very strat in this video (exact serial number) and have a funny story to share... I visited the Guitar Gallery at Andertons a couple of weeks back on a trip to London from Portugal. My girlfriend was at a wine tasting in the city so I jumped on a train to Guildford to play some guitars without her knowing. Sneaky I know ;) Anyways, after 4 hours of guitar roulette with amazing service... the Lake Placid Strat fell into my lap and immediately got the "oh shit - this is the one feeling". The problem was my train back to London was leaving in 5 minutes so I didn't really have time to put it through it's paces, so I rushed a deposit through with Paul and told him I'd collect it in a couple of weeks. I then ran down Guilford High Street only to barely make my train. As I sat there with adrenaline pumping through my veins, I decided to come clean to my girlfriend and tell her I'd just put a deposit down on a £4.5k guitar and I had no idea how I would get it back to Portugal. Her reaction was like it always is with my guitar purchases.... "You're an idiot. Why do you need another one!" I tried to explain, but as always it fell on death ears. She then asked how much it is, so I sent her the link to it on the Andertons website (rookie error), to which she replied... "Why have you spent all this money on a beaten up guitar. It's not even new!". Again... I tried to explain but my efforts were futile. Anyways, fast forward to last weekend and I'd decided to fly back to the UK to collect the guitar instead of it being posted directly to Portugal due to the rather suspect Portuguese customs office (I'm not saying they're corrupt or anything.. but they're definitely corrupt). And this is where the story get's interesting... After spending the whole 3 hour flight dreaming up ways that the ground staff had destroyed my guitar, we landed and I saw the beaten up Fender cardboard box appear on the luggage belt. I picked it up... ran to the airport exit excited to play it... and then it happened... Just inches away from freedom a customs officer blocked my path and told me to come with them. "Ahhhh shiiiiiit" I thought. They're gonna charge me tax on this for 20%+. How am I going to explain another £1,000 to my girlfriend??? But then the greatest thing happened... The customs officer opened the box, took one look at the guitar and said in broken English: "This is old. No tax on old. You can go" I agreed, put the guitar back in its case, and ran towards the taxi rank. Smiling to myself I pulled out my phone and messaged my girlfriend explaining that my "old" beat up guitar had actually just saved me £1,000. Who said relic'd guitars are a waste of money 'ey? Anyhow - thank you so much to Andertons for helping me find my dream guitar. I literally couldn't be happier and the story makes it so much better. P.S. I wanted to share this story as soon as it happened yesterday but had no where to do it. And now I tune into KZread and find my guitar on the channel. What a strange sequence of events.

Beautiful guitars. Les Paul for me, please. All my life - from becoming interested in guitar - I wanted a Les Paul. It took a divorce and selling my house but I got one eventually in 1998. A plain old sunburst Standard but it's a beauty. Then again, I also love Strats, and my old Strat seems to get most of the action.

What a great episode! Got the GAS juices flowing, and made me play along with my collection to do a little comparison alongside Lee & Sasha. I think the factor not considered in the video is the impact of the amp used. I played a Fender Twin which made me lean toward the Tele and Strat over the LP and PRS. Totally subjective. Note #2 - The B&G reminded me of a Gibson Blueshawk in it's body shape (Without the Varitone), but sounded far superior. 100% in that's one to consider when the standard model itches are well scratched.

For a Strat, the pickups mounted on the plastic pickguard, and the floating bridge makes alot of the tone for sure. Just as the on metal mounted pickup of a Tele. There the bridgepickup can become floating when the screws are very tight on the body.

I can't believe that Lee went with the Les Paul for his "one and only" choice. I always thought that you are a Strat-o-holic since you owned so many and it always seemed that you prefered them in the videos since the beginning of the channel. I am really suprised, I would have bet my house that you say "I go for the iconic strat sound" (Clapton, Hendrix, Mayer).

'"I think there are more rubbish old guitars than new." Great statement. I have a 1952 Goldtop and 1955 Junior. Both are GREAT guitars. I mean LIFETIME guitars. That being said. I owned a 1954 Junior that was just dead sounding. I have and have owned many R9's and R8's. Two of my favorite current guitars are a 1985 Greco Triple pickup Custom and wait for it......a Jay Macius Jazzmaster! I sold Gibson, Fender, and PRS. I became a cork sniffer once I started buying reissues and vintage pieces. I have changed my mind considerably with the quality of newer cost efficient guitars that are heads and shoulders above what was available for me in the late 1970's early 80's. I am biased as I am a Les Paul player but I think the Murphy sounded best!

There is something about a les paul that can crank your motivation and actually make you rise to the occasion to be a better player because the guitar sounds so good you don't want to let it down. "Are They Any Good?" is certainly a subjective description. Back in my young and single days, I owned several Gibsons and USA Fenders, they were great guitars, Les Pauls, Explorers, Flying Vs, Stratocasters and so on. We need to remember is that what is 'great' to me, might not be 'great' to someone else and vice versa. To me, it's tone and playability that matter most, followed by condition and appearance. If I don't want to play it or look at it, it's not worth as much to me as it might be to someone else. All guitars are a very individual instrument and to illustrate that point, I'll say I don't like Gibson SGs, I never have and probably never will so they aren't 'worth" my attention like say, a Gibson Les Paul or a PRS Custom 24 might be. I think we need to remember that no guitar is as good as it can be until it ends up in the hands of the player that falls in love with it and plays it to it's fullest potential. It bears repeating the saying; "The guitar picks the player as much as the player picks the guitar."

Capt. We all know you're a fender guy, he slammed on the les paul.! Sounded better than the strat. Plus he bragged about getting the Tele sound, then switched into humbucker mode. Love the vids!

IMO the reason why Les Paul's & Strats are still so popular is that everything else is basically a copy.

Of course its the Les Paul. I know many people hate it but if you go in the shop and play then its hard to buy anything but a Les Paul Custom Shop. Its just that good.

Agreed. I went into a shop that had tons of Les Pauls. I went there looking for a Standard because I’ve always thought the reissues were just a cash grab. After 3 hours I left with a 59 reissue. I couldn’t put it down. They really are that good.

I can't agree more with the Captain at the beginning, its pretty disappointing that we ended up with such a basic selection. If we as an audience voted for our favorite spice, it'd be flour, lol

Gibson 71 les paul was almost my first guitar. But I was ignorant and insulted that thw saleman brought me an old beat up guitar. It was 750. I left with an epiphone custom with gold hardware and coil tapped cheap pickups for the same price because it was pretty. That mistake still haunts me. I got rid of the epiphone. Have had tons of guitars since. I now only own 2 guitars, a strat and 355. But (to me) the les paul has the most beautiful clean/overdrive tone in the guitar game and i still have not found the one!

ah mate that sucks, I fortunately did a slightly better choice, was at the time commenting with a former teacher that I wanted to invest on a proper guitar and was offered to buy a quite beaten les paul for 1K, 96 standard, beast of a guitar, which I got, a couple weeks later i got offered a 80's standard also for 1K on almost mint condition, had to pass on that one

Would the early player version of you been able to take care of a vintage guitar, or would you have abused it?

I did a very similar thing when I bought my first, and only bass guitar. There was a used Fender (precision?, jazz?) bass that was the exact same price as the brand new shiny Epiphone bass that I ended up buying. The fender was a little beat up - which I now know means that it was played often, and likely plays and sounds great. I still don't have that much use for a bass, so I've never bought another one, but I kick myself every time I think of it. For the price, I really should have went home with that Fender.

I'm hoping one day.... One day that Andertons do a pedal cam so we can see what pedals engaged and whole pedalboards. Of course, everyone agrees that your audience enjoys guitar pedals. PLEASE DO IT ALREADY
