The scene where Inigo Montoya kills the six-fingered man and says, "I want my father back, you son of a bitch" always made me tear up for some reason when I was younger. It just felt really raw and intense to me. Then I found out that Mandy Patinkin had lost his father to cancer in real life and said that pain bled over into his acting in this part, so the emotions were actually genuine as he channeled that into that line. It's sad, but a beautiful tribute.

Oh thank God I didn't know that before I watched!!! lol. I would have been a mess. Green Mile broke me pretty good, as the Return of the King, then came Dobby in Harry Potter, so I'm finally putting myself back together lol. That would have probably done it though.

Confirmed! He said as an actor he viewed the 6 finger man as the cancer that killed his dad, and when the 6 finger man said, "I'll give you whatever you want", his reply "I want my father back". Ugh...so much more emotion to that moment

A few fun facts I'm surprised nobody has mentioned. Sometimes it was cold on set, so Andre would put his hand on Robin Wrights head like a hat in between scenes, to help keep her warm. Rob Reiner had to leave the set during the Miracle Max scenes because he couldn't stop laughing. During that same scene, Mandy Patinkin actually cracked a rib withholding laughter. (I suspect Carol Kane had something to do with that as well) That's all I have. Good reaction.

it is "inconceivable" how excellent the sword fight between Mandy Patinkin and Cary Elwes was. It is on par with anything in the Errol Flynn swashbucklers, the LOTR and Hobbit movies, or almost any other cinematic duels. And Andre Rousimoff, aka Andre The Giant, was very proud of his part as Fessik, and while he was still alive, he passed more than ten years ago, he would play The Princess Bride for folks that visited him at his ranch in North Carolina. Rob Reiner is a very good Director. Understatement of the year. Oh No, The Cliffs Of Insanity!

I think of this movie as kind of a love letter to playing make-believe as a kid, and to all the adventure stories where we pictured ourselves as the main character. I don't know if it connects in the same way with younger people, because the way children play and our relationship to media has changed so much. But I was a kid in the 80s, and this is one of the few things that makes me nostalgic for those days. It reminds me of the kid I used to be, and I love it dearly for that.

There are soooooo many differences between the book and the movie, I could type for an hour, but I'll limit myself to this tidbit: in the book, the line "life is pain ... anyone who tells you differently is selling something" was said to Fezzik, by his parents, in his back story. Which became especially poignant when the movie was made, since Andre was experiencing severe back pain throughout the filming.

This is wonderful! It is unfortunate that there is a generation out there who are completely ignorant of this classic. True story: my kids grew up with this movie and it is an all time favourite. Few years ago, my son and his wife were flying to Hawaii. He was wearing a polo shirt with " Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die" printed like a name badge. He was actually STOPPED by security as it was perceived as a threat. It took Google and KZread search to prove that this was a classic line from the movie. My son wore this shirt often, but never again to the airport.

Hello. It was filmed (mostly) in the UK. I live not far away from Pinewood Studios, next door to that is Black Park which has a load of forestry and a lake, so it appears in hundreds of movies because it’s easy for the filmmakers to get to. When it appears in a film, I can recognise it immediately. So, bits of this movie were filmed there and, since you mentioned it, some of the forest scenes in ‘Stardust’ were too. It’s quite popular with fantasy films, it’s in ‘Willow’ (not recommended) and a few of the Harry Potters, for example.

So The Princess Bride started out as a novel by William Goldman (who also wrote the screenplay, and is also famous for movies like Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid and so on). The novel is meta-fictional story on how a supposedly real (it's not) book by one "S. Morgenstern" was read to him by his father as a child, and he went out to find it for his own (non-existent) son, but found out the original novel was like hundreds of pages of describing pointless details. Basically, the non-existent book within the book is a parody of the adventure novels he read as a kid, stories by late 19th-early 20th century writers, but mainly of the style of Rafael Sabatini, who wrote the novels that the classic movies The Sea Hawk and Captain Blood were based on. The novel is also darker in tone, and more cynical over all (the ending is a bit more ambiguous) and at least a third of the novel is Goldman apologizing for editing out the boring parts, or going on tangents about how his fictional son was the reason he sought out the fictional book he supposedly "edited", and the kid never actually got to read it in time to appreciate it. The scene with Inigo and Fezzik in the dungeon is a bit longer, and has some hilarious bits in it. *Edit* Part of the joke is that he adds a bunch of pointless, meandering details himself, making the same mistake as "S. Morgenstern". (It's a Lucifer joke. "Morgenstern" is Morningstar, and S...well. Take a wild guess.)

I had a roommate who was a huge fan of the book, so a bunch of us took several buses across Milwaukee to get to the one theater that was showing this in previews on Thursday night, the day before its official release. The 'land war in Asia' line was a quote variously attributed to Eisenhower or Douglas MacArthur. It was quoted often during the Vietnam war and was familiar to Rob Reiner's and William Goldman's contemporaries. Now, most people know it from this film. Incidentally, this is a pretty faithful adaptation of a book that might have been very difficult to adapt, were it not for the fact that William Goldman wrote both the book and screenplay (though Reiner made a crucial change at the end).

You nailed the tone/approach to the comedy, how it blends so well with the storytelling, and how at first it seems its going to just be a farce but surprises you by being something different and more than that. If you're interested in watching something else like this, I recommend the tv show Our Flag Means Death. It also has a similar overall vibe (silly, warm & wholesome despite subject matter that isn't lol, while letting drama & tragedy come thru when needed) and even a rather similar look. It's even self aware about it too, as there's a little Andre the Giant dressed in the cloak tribute moment. Our Flag also has wonderful representation for PoC and LGBTQ people (esp for us older and less conventional queers 😁). Speaking of Andre the Giant, just have to mention that apparently he was absolutely lovely on set and everyone really enjoyed working with him. And of course, as always -- you had me cracking up so much, David!! Esp the Applebee's confirmation after the ROUS showed up 🤣🤣

I recommend Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It's a martial arts film with flying as is common. It's about a stolen sword and a man trying to retrieve it. It's also about two romances of unrequited love due to social circumstances. I, also, recommend subtitles vice dubbed as the translation is different and you can hear the real actors.

When Rob (Reiner) asked Mark Knopfler (lead singer and guitarist in the band Dire Straits) to write the soundtrack for "The Princess Bride", Mark would agree only if Rob used the hat that he (Rob) wore in "This is Spinal Tap" somewhere in the movie. I know I said I wouldn't go into all the differences between the book and the movie, but I do want to explain the "nesting realities" on display. There never was a book called The Princess Bride by S Morgenstern. If you buy a copy of the book, you'll find it's "edited and annotated" by William Goldman, but the whole thing is a novel, Goldman wrote all of it. Now, it's the father instead of the grandfather who shares the story, and it takes place over several days as opposed to one day, but other than that, the framing is basically the same. It's a fiction within a fiction.

I love Angela Lansbury! From Mrs. Potts to Murder She Wrote, Manchurian Candidate, even Bedknobs and Broomsticks, she's great in my book. But I have not seen Court Jester, so thank you for the recommendation!

I'm not going to bother with trivia, or make any snide remarks (even though I love my snide remarks), because this is a movie my whole family loves and can watch together at the drop of a holocaust cloak. Instead, I'm going to say how much fun it was for me and my hubby to watch you enjoy it so much. I love when someone discovers this movie and says, "this isn't like anything I've seen before." It's a happy, magical comfort movie with giants, sword fights, and true love. What more could you want? Oh, except watching more of your reaction vids. Until next time, good wishes to you and yours.

YOU know The Man in Black is Westley, but Grandson, the story being READ TO HIM, has no clues as to who The Man in Black is. Same thing goes for Buttercup "not recognizing" Westley behind the black mask. Location shots were in northern England; nice landscapes of various types. Fire Swamp was in studio as was sword fight ruins. Actually, Mr. Falk experimented with make-up to make him appear older, but he didn't like the results (nor did Rob Reiner), so they added only a light layer of make-up on "Columbo."

I have watched a lot of reactions to this movie, and still nobody catches that not only does inigo give the count the same scars on the cheeks, but he also stabs him in the same three places the count stabbed inigo.

Aww, I really thought you'd be the first reactor to catch the narrators joke where after explaining about Buttercup not loving Prince Humperdink he says "The only joy she found was in her daily ride". Without the visual cue of Buttercup on a horse it has a very different meaning.

Hahahaha I have failed. Did you ever see the mockumentary Drop Dead Gorgeous? This reminds me of a part in that where they talk about how much their friend Tammy likes riding her tractor because the heavy vibrations “help her think”. And that she never smoked except after a good ride on the tractor. Lol

I definitely see the Cindi Lauper, if she wasn't so awesome.. And the "life is pain"... been using it for decades :0 .. it's usable because it's true.
