I would love to see what Rebecca would do if she was going to down size. I would challenge you Rebecca to show us how you would deal with all your beautiful favourite things that you currently have and how you would decorate when you downsize into a 750 square foot condo. I can’t wait for that video.

As a fellow professional interior designer, I must agree with all your suggestions about properly using wall space for art, mirrors, and woven tapestries. I find that a lot of people consider what to hang on the wall as a minor detail, almost as an afterthought, when actually it is one of the key elements in a room. You explained the concepts very well, and I enjoyed this video!

Rebecca! I haven't watched past the opening and already as an Interior Designer I am saying 'THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!' for setting the record straight on how to hang art! It is one of my pet peeves and I believe the wrong hanging of art can literally ruin a room. Now, I will watch and applaud your sharing the basics of hanging art well. THANK YOU!

It never ceases to amaze me people’s decorating choices, picture arrangements is indeed a prime example, to high, to much, etc. Rebecca , you have a very gracious way of telling people what is wrong and suggesting improvements. Love watching you, always such good ideas and advice.

I use a 3D art piece [Beatles CD's artwork] to cover the electrical box in my living room which was placed center wall where the cable connection is and is flanked by 2 acoustic guitars. The art piece is perfect and can be taken down when I need to. I don't have a lot of art up yet and this will help me keep the balance throughout my town home. Thank you.

You have such a kind, gentle way of suggesting a better way. Love your videos ... all of them.

Hello Rebecca! This is Cheryl (aka Kildsence ….. 8:55 which is a portion of my last name which was pulled from my email address!! I think many of us have been misled by furniture catalogs and decorating magazines that a bit of asymmetry translates into “fresh,” “modern” or “edgy.” The problem is that those photos are highly stylized, taken from specific angles, and don’t translate well into homes we live in. When real homes are professionally photographed for editorial purposes, the decor is often shifted about from how it’s actually set up, just to get an interesting or pleasing image. Many of us unsuccessfully try to replicate these looks, forgetting that unlike a photo, our homes are experienced in 3 dimensions!

I absolutely loved this series! I definitely learned alot and can not wait to refresh my space ❤

This was Great Rebecca, I took your advice in one of your last videos where you said the room had too much fabric in it and that was kind of my tv room, I switched out the coffee table to a timber top one I had in another room and it made all the difference, who would of thought something so simple would make such an impact on the look of the room, I’m so happy with how it turned out. I'd actually love to join, but I wish I knew if I joined if I could ask specific questions. Does anyone know?. I have the most awkward living room layout, and Im screaming for help. I'd submit photos, but Im in the process of repainting ceilings and walls, thus doing your 5-day challenge at the same time.. I think what some of these people are listening to are some designers on youtube that tell you to move that picture over a bit. Nope, listen to Rebecca. Symmetry is the ONLY right way, OR it just looks off or lonely.

Rebeca, loves symmetry but that's not the only way. You can also try an asymmetrical composition as long as you can achieve the same visual weight on both sides. Symmetrical arrangements are easier because you just mirror the same objects.

Awwwwww Donna, your comment makes me very happy. To answer your question… there is a way to get direct feedback as a member of The Design Sessions. The first Friday of every month, I address 5 submissions from members who send me photos of one of their rooms and I spend 10-15 minutes addressing their room and questions . It’s a valuable bonus to being a member. However, I need to tell you, it’s not the reason to join. The Design Sessions has far more value than access to me… the greatest value is the content I’ve filmed taking you deeper into the why’s and how’s of what I do. Bottom line… it’s simple if you understand the principles I teach you. Donna, the cost of being a member is ridiculously low… you’ve got nothing to loose. Just do it my friend. 🤷🏻‍♀️ When was the last time someone had to talk you into a cup of coffee or a cocktail? Pretty equivalent to the cost of joining The Design Sessions. If you want the help… it’s available… enough said 🤷🏻‍♀️ RR

My philosophy of symmetry might be easier… if indeed that’s all you are doing… just mirroring objects… but if you are a true follower of my videos you would know I take symmetry to the next level. It’s not as simple as copying and pasting… It’s far more complex my friend. But thank you for weighing in with my viewers. RR

It can be learned! The best thing I ever did - beside subscribing to the Design Sessions, which was Step One - was start buying or borrowing from the library design books by a single decorator. Reading their explanations of what they did and why, plus actually having the images in my hands where I can really take time to ask myself what I like or dislike, why their shelves look great when mine didn't, etc. taught me a lot. If you know what you like, maybe find some books where your style is shown at its highest and best.

I love your content! I use the tack behind the photo trick too. I thought I was the only one! My photo displays need help but at least they are level lol.

Another great video, I always had an issue with art that is close to the ceiling, funny thing ( don't know if it ever happen to you ), when I asked some people why was the art so high behind couches ( I noticed that usually is behind the main couch ), the answer was: "So no one hits it's head on it"...???? I never had the courage to say that it does not make sense at all...

If their sofa is smashed up against a wall, then it is too close to the wall. Maybe suggest they hang the art lower and pull the sofa away from the wall?? Is that helpful?

Agree with almost everything you said! I’ll add a few more. I abhor TVs anywhere near beautiful fireplaces. Fireplaces should be the focal points of their walls. Glass over framed pieces should be non-reflective so they can be seen from every angle without much loss. Conservation/museum glass is expensive, but worth it for important pieces. Paintings and prints should always draw the eye to the center of the wall. For example, a portrait looking to the right should be hung to the left of center. Also, because hanging nails must always go into solid wood studs, usually the stud doesn’t align with where you want the piece to hang. There are at least 4 ways to fix it. 1. Nail a 16” block of wood to adjacent studs (assuming the studs are 16” on center). Then you can nail anywhere along the length to be centered where you want it. 2. Nail nails in the two adjacent studs, and double up the hanging wire on the back of the piece. Hang one wire length on one nail, and the other on the other nail. That way, you can slide your piece to the left or right, and always be level. 3. Less secure, use molly anchors in the wall, exactly where you want the center of the piece to be. 4. Install ceiling/wall trim and a sliding track. Then hang wires down to your piece.

I wish I could share this with everyone I know (some don't use tech)! It's a huge pet peeve.Most people hang the art way too high or their art is too tiny. I can't go into a friends house and say, "Hey, I brought a hammer, how about we move this art where it should be?!" Lol! I guess balance, scale, texture, color and light isn’t intuitive to everyone . 🤷🏻‍♀

Sometimes people move into a home and place art/photos on walls to temporarily hide hooks from the last owners. I’m guilty of this. Problem is it becomes permanent as we become blind to it. We’re about to paint our hallway so I took off those ‘temporary’ frames (12 years) and realised I would have been better off with little holes in the wall rather than odd looking gallery wall. Once painted, I’ll be taking your advice and be very discerning about what pieces and where I hang them. Thanks.
