My heart dropped when Matthew said "Natural 2" on his Recovery Check at Dying 2 thinking Tallitha just died but then the moment just passed by so fast I guess that everyone missed it. Natural 2 being a Crit fail for the DC 12 Recovery check was remembered later in the episode as dramatic buildup on Brother Ramius and Asta's Recovery Rolls so I guess Tallitha got a lucky 2nd leash on life for the remainder of this stress inducing episode.

I felt so bad for the players in this episode. This combat illustrates exactly why hero points are a necessary part of the Pathfinder 2E system. I feel like the party needs a front line melee combatant in the form of a barbarian or a champion, a character with high hit points or a high AC or both.

Just some tactics suggestions. Maybe Professor Eric can include some insight on these during We Are Stupid in addition to his great rules clarifications: The extra range from a Longbow is only helpful if the character using it is desperate to avoid damage by staying away from danger. Kate’s monk has the highest AC and saves in the whole party, so using a Longbow’s 50 feet of range in Monastic Archer stance instead of 30 with a Shortbow to avoid hits more frequently is not a huge game changer. In fact, it would probably be a good thing if Kate got attacked more, to help share the burden with Sydney. Monks also have a very high movespeed to easily get within 30 feet of enemies if she were using a Shortbow, and Flurry of Blows makes spending the action to Stride far less punishing. As mentioned in a few other comments, Monastic Archer stance only limits the range of bow shots that use Flurry of Blows and other Monk abilities. Kate wouldn’t need to drop the stance to fire a Shortbow at 60 feet as a regular Strike if she needed to. This has mostly come up on Sydney’s turns, but attacking from the ground is basically never worth it when an attack roll is involved. Being on the ground makes you Off-Guard to all enemy attacks (-2 AC, makes getting crit easier), including ranged attacks, and reduces your attack roll by -2. Standing up is a valuable action investment on the offensive and defensive sides of the coin. Even if it is a spellcaster forcing a save on the enemy, standing up would still be valuable for the defense improvement from losing Off-Guard if an enemy will be attacking soon. It’s not about dodging the hit, it’s about making the crit less likely, which will likely keep the character conscious for an extra turn. The current party struggles to make enemies Off-Guard, which might be a consideration if backup characters need to get made. Either 2 characters who consistently go into melee for flanking, or a way to trip enemies to make them Off-Guard would drastically help this very ranged-attack focused party to hit more frequently.

  • @khronos3132

A note I just thought of for Matthew is to have a default plan for when an inevitable poor Devise a Stratagem roll happens. Recall Knowledge is always great but that is still only 2 out of 3 actions for the turn. Moving into flanking for Sydney does not have an immediate impact, but if it helps her land a big Spellstrike then it is totally worth it. Maybe even getting a Buckler or a Wooden/Steel Shield to raise as an action sink to make it less dangerous while flanking when Recall Knowledge has already been done could be a nice option. Also, Aid is amazing and is a great use of an Action+Reaction at pretty much every stage of the game. Skid could potentially look for some additional turns to Aid as well instead of using the Shield cantrip (obviously depends how close to danger Buggles is). Another general tactic to keep in mind is Delay to line up party actions in a favorable way. This has been used to good effect in multiple instances in previous episodes, but just something to keep looking for.

Another thing: last episode, Troy told them they could easily jump across those rocks without Acrobatics checks, everyone made a point of discussing how it didn't look particularly dangerous. For them to suddenly become treacherous during the encounter seems a little odd (you don't need to make an Acrobatics check to not fall prone when hit by an attack in regular ground combat, so why would you need one to not fall *off* of a stable rock surface?). If they were always treacherous to be on, then that should've been telegraphed last episode and they should've needed to make checks. The team's crossing would very likely have been done differently if they knew there were checks involved, and the combat would've looked very different.

Looking through the adventure Path, the book states this is a moderate encounter for a party of 4. But I believe the author of the adventure didn't consider the impact of the Uneven Terrain on the difficulty. Not to mention the river running by. Overall, this was one of those cases where the GM is rolling well and the players are rolling incredibly poorly (get new dice guys!), so it will make any non-trivial battle look more difficult and scary than it is. The same way that players rolling incredibly well will make a Severe encounter look easy. It sucks, but the dice gods are fickle. All we can do is improve our odds.

I think Brother Ramius and Buggles need to cast more spells, specially Runic Weapon and other buffs (that don't rely on enemy difficulty). Incremental leveling is a big part of the Cypher System/Numenera. Not sure if yall have ever had a chance to try it, but it works pretty well. You spend 4 XP to get an advancement of your choice (HP, Skill, Ability, etc...) and once you have four of those, you advance to the next Tier and it resets your choices. Can only pick a specific advancement once per Tier, but it works out pretty well as you get roughly 2-3 XP per session.

@@GooberNutt Troy never sticks to one character in combat so, a defensive character wouldn't really help them...they need someone to control enemy movements and apply debuffs. While hero points would help a bit, I think the bigger issues are the really bad rolls by the party (which hero points are still subject to) and the high number of single enemy combats which means said enemy is higher level than the party. Paizo seems to love those fights but while PF2 has a really good encounter building ruleset it is weakest at low levels with enemies higher level than the party. The PCs don't yet have the HP to soak the damage, crits from enemies are very common, and when one PC goes down it can quickly cause the encounter to spiral out of control. On top of that, the party hasn't really been using great tactics and often doesn't understand how their own abilities work. Putting all of this together (including the lack of hero points) and you have a recipe for disaster.

The Hero Point system in 2e does 2 things: let you re-roll a bad check and, maybe the most important part for this episode in particular, from the Player Core book, “Spend all your Hero Points (minimum 1) to avoid death. You can do this when your dying condition would increase. You lose the dying condition entirely and stabilize with 0 Hit Points. You don't gain the wounded condition or increase its value from losing the dying condition in this way, but if you already had that condition, you don't lose it or decrease its value.” That option with a Hero Point for every session is a dramatic game changer.

The hedgehog is the only one that is killing anything, Kates rolling like Joe, everyone's dying, this snail is destroying everyone in 1 hit, they STILL HAVEN'T LEVELED UP, no one has caps. Hey Troy questions... Can the snail just get bored and walk away? Like can this just be no longer fun for the snail or can it just feel bad for them? Can Hubert distract the snail or annoy it enough to get its attention?

Rather than getting bored, since almost all threats are down around her, I would have the snail concentrate on killing one prey, grabbing it and running away with it to eat it. That would end the combat in a sort of realistic way, with one death and a chance for the other players to survive

Another brutal episode. I'm only starting to learn PF2e, but the one thing I've learned is that single enemy, high AC encounters are ROUGH in this game, and this is really showing it. With a +8, poor Kate has to roll 13 or above just to land some chip damage. Also I thought for sure Hubert was about to show us his true power or something, but alas, it was just his bushy.

I’m really struggling with GCP 2.0. The AP really lacks direction; the inciting incident happens “off screen” before the adventure starts, so there’s no real connection to it, and then there’s no sense of what the objective is. It’s also reinforcing my experience with 2e as a system: it’s not fun. You need to play it like a war game, with an optimized party composition and always make the best tactical choices or you get stomped. There’s no real room for doing what’s cool or fun.

  • @LightningRaven42

@@byronkern2295 This idea of not being able to do cool things (which you can, specially once you have some levels), is only halfway true. On severe and Extreme encounters you need to be as effective with your actions as you can be. However, you are mistaken if you think that doing "cool stuff" means choosing to make weird stuff that won't help your party. My group has been playing since PF2e and our party, with one less PC mind you, would've make quick work of this episode's combat.

If it was food, surely, with both Ramieus and Asta KO'd and everyone else on the other side of the river, it would take one away and retreat to feed. This is not Troy's doing, the book just says that it ambushes the party and fights until it is reduced to 10HP. The encounter itself is pretty good due to the terrain, but Paizo has an awful habit of 90% of fights being "This thing tries killing all the PCs just 'cus". That is usually combined with "It has zero self preservation and either fights to the death or tries to retreat on such low HP it's guaranteed dead on the next PCs turn.

Great ep. as usual! In my opinion, you shouldn't think of "rolling a save" as it being an action. A save is an abstraction mechanism to describe what happens to your character in that moment. However, if the save is contained or part of an action (or reaction: Grab an Edge), then yes it's an action. So, if you are unconscious you shouldn't be able to Grab an Edge. Personally, I would have let them roll Acrobatics as soon as they got hit, but before giving them the dying condition. If they fall by failing the Acrob., they don't have a chance to stay on the rock.

I think this group would do whatever they could to get to safety and then be like nope I'm not fighting any more.

I have to say in terms of strategics, there's really some stuff they could be doing better. Especially Sidney with Asta as the "frontliner" character. Her first strategy in the combat against a possible boss monster is to run up into its face, strike, and then just stand there and give it ALL 3 ACTIONS to hit her for free. A more strategic approach would be to somehow make the boss move to get to you, or somehow cooperate with the others to get some buffs, or debuff the enemy, etc.

Grabbing an edge is considered a reaction “action.” Reflex for an unconscious character would be like how much damage you take from an AOE or trap maybe? After all ac includes your armor. Reflex could just be your base odds of getting hit or how bad you’re hit with your armor? flat check with a -4 penalty sounds generous. If it didn’t say you take a negative I would’ve just said you take 0 reflex which isn’t necessarily a crit fail on low lvl encounters. That said If you’re unconscious falling I’d say you are denied the reflex because you can’t act to grab the edge.

A good meat grinder can be a great introduction. Tastes may vary as with anything else. Real stakes and compelling characters bring out a lot in an AP, or even a homebrew campaign. The GCN crew bring a LOT to the table (figuratively and literally) with character choices and role-play. It can be a real bummer for a character to wind up as a flash in the pan before a brutal death (and a gut punch for the player), but when they do get a chance for fleshing out via backstory even crunch-heavy tactical games become all the richer to play and to watch.

The characters and their arcs have especially stood out to me, and I've found myself enjoying combat-heavy episodes the more I learn.
