Right we are all influenced by trends but the older you get the more you stick to the style you enjoyed the most in your youth and are reluctant to change it. Older people in general are less influenced by trends than young ones.

very interesting topic and approach, I totally agree, fashion trends at any given period of time reflect the needs of society. Economy, technology and geography are the actual trendsetters. The fashion industry 's job is to interpret the needs.

Well said!!!! An additional observation for those of us who mostly buy their clothing in the pret-a-porter financial range is our choices are limited by what is available, no matter how creative we try to be; just a fact of social context.

You don't follow trends? You must be making all your own clothing because all ready-to-wear clothes are designed according to the trends. I'm reminded of this every time I shop because my tastes tend towards fashion of other decades, but you won't find it on the rack.

Amy Eades I actually make most of my own "dress" and business wear - because the styles of the 1930s and early 1940s America suit me well. For casual wear: boot-cut jeans, and V-neck T-shirts or men's shirts which I have altered for a slimmer lower torso. Actually, all of my "dress" trousers are men's trousers with the waist taken in a bit. I really hate handbags and won't buy or make anything without decent pockets.

There was an Oprah episode about what looks good on your body types. An a-line skirt was decided was the best for one woman...the stylists had to scour the mall for one single a-line skirt which just wasn't the trend of that decade. I know why my mother kept her clothes for decades..even shortening a kilt in the 60s and tearing it apart in the 70s and remaking it longer. The tartan was hand woven in Scotland right after the war...nothing could compare at JoAnne Fabrics.

I didn't like skinny jeans, but at a certain point, I could not find the style I like, a boot cut. But the same thing happened to me in the 90's with the baggy jeans, at the end I had some because I could not find the jeans I like, boot cut. I do like the newer fabrics though, because I have large hips, and the stretch fabric allows me to get a tighter leg, while the boot cut helps even out my shape. That's the hard thing about trends,.....they are not always good for all body types. Or more correctly, if you have a silhouette you want to achieve that is not what is currently in style, it's difficult.

  • @humanormachine2936

So the trend is the general style habits of an extended period of time. Fads, what we usually call "trends", are the specific style choices that come in and out of style very rapidly, and can lean a bit more on the avant garde end of the spectrum.

I know a woman (a local jazz singer, with an amazing voice) who only wears vintage and is never in this decade as far as fashion. Many days she would fit nicely in a 1950s photo. Other days she would fit other decades but never newer than 70s and very feminine. I've known her since she was a teenager and she dressed this way even back then . It doesn't look comfortable, but she always looks beautiful.

  • @Luineile
    @Luineile7 жыл бұрын

Agree on every word! Trend and society go hand in hand. So, if one is a part of society, they would follow the trend. And I noticed that people who claim not to follow fashion trends and be unique are usually the ones whose clothing choices fit perfectly in the said trends, just my observation ^^

I think people use the words "trend" and "fad" interchangeably and people who say they don't follow trends they really mean they don't follow the fads. But if someone is going out of her way to not follow the fads, then she is still being influenced by the fads.

i love this video! I used to be one of those people said "I don't follow the current fashion trend"-"I make my own trend, style"...but it's bullshit. I am influenced by shapes, forms, styles and fits. I'm just not up for running to the fast fashion retail stores to consume the latest outcome and change my wardrobe seasonly. I'd rather look into my shape, my taste and get inspiration from other creative people, designers, artists, etc....And I totally agree with you. Everyone follows styles, trends, fashion...

According to the 100 years of fashion video, my style is strongly 90s with a touch of 2000s. It makes sense--I grew up in that era and the trends imprinted on me as something I'll choose to do as long as they look good on me. It explains also to an extent why people always comment on my style--I never appear trendy because my style choices come from the past. It's true even when I'm not wearing typical nineties leggings-and-a-tunic. My longer dresses tend to have a fifties silhouette or seventies color palette--very much the opposite of current dressy-casual.

I take my pick from the trends every year. It's like a game: what will they offer me to play with this time? And it's fun. I'm one of those gals who never really left their Gothic phase behind, but I combine my dark garb with last minute enhancements like printed slip-ons or a transparent PVC choker. (I love chokers. Always has been. And now they are everywhere. Oh, bliss!) The "dark-hipster-witchy-occultist" vibe has been on a rise for quite some time, which fills my heart with glee. So many floor length velvet skirts and swooshy lacy black kimono thingies to pick from. The final effect might be neither red-hot trendy nor very extravagant, but I feel good in my clothes. I feel like me. Isn't what it's all about?

What about people who intentionally wear clothes from a different decade? I think there are exceptions to this. I also think that designers and fashionistas do have an influence on trends. Particularly high fashion designers who are successful enough that they can take risks and break new frontiers by being experimental and seeing what people respond to. Although the consumers are certainly the ones who make the final decision, they can be influenced and I think there is a reciprocal relationship between designers and consumers at multiple levels.

Or people who dress like Lady Gaga 09'😂. But I guess thats what shes saying with the timing. If you're dressing too avant garde, you wont set a trend because society isn't ready for it. Her point is that there is some kind of natural evolution of fashion that society pushes towards, no individual is responsible for the next trend. The "trend setters" are just those individuals who can see when the trend is starting to shift sooner than most other people so it seems like they were the first ones to do it but thats not the case. Kardashians don't come up with fashion ideas that no one else has done before, they just make a look that is starting to become popular even more mega popular with mainstream audiences. People who have a more avant garde fashion taste like someone who dresses like they're from the 20s are usually the only ones dressing that way; they don't start trends. Hope that clears up your question 👍

personally, I think style-wise I fit in *more* in the 90s (grunge style) due to the fact that a lot if not most of the clothes I wear are second-hand/thrifted from that decade. I just like the feel of it more, with more rigid fabrics and textures, even if the cut is still pretty much the same (loose/comfortable). I do agree with your perspective though! we are always influenced by trends because if we want to buy new clothes, they will all be part of the existing trends, whether we like it or not. really like the video!

I am aware. however, there's a difference in "things made/bought *now* that mimic the 90s grunge style" and "things from the 90s", which is what I meant :) like, despite the styles being similar, the fabric use has definitely changed. the key item, flannels for example. nowadays, they are mass-produced in a lighter, more stretchy style, as opposed to thicker, "harder" fabrics used before. as for the influence, again, you are right that it is now very "in". I have been into that style even before the recent fad had begun (or at least before I was aware that it was a fad), simply because of the music I listen to, and the general comfort of those clothes. so yeah :)

I agree. How come one cannot be at least influenced by trends if they are shopping at the ordinary stores all the time? You buy stuff that is available and this selection is limited by favoured designs and popular choices. No man is an island.

I loved this. I do enjoy slightly more classy clothing (I would NEVER wear bad clothes out, that's for lazy inside days and sleeping) but it still reflects trends. I'm not wearing a ruffled collar and tights, am I? I wear the trends of what's modern, it's just what we do as people.

I wouldn't say I don't follow trends per-say but I really have always dressed about 5 years ahead of them. People remark on it all the time and I get stopped by ppl who want to talk about my clothes quite often. I don't shop at retail stores, buy a lot of second hand free pile even dumpster and I make a lot of my own cloths so yeah anyway we do exist but your right about the people who are saying that they don't follow them they are just saying that most of the time. Fashion trends are cyclical and I just like to ride ahead of the wave before it comes around again, by the time it catches on I'm usually done with it :3

I think that trends are sort of magical, not something to be afraid of joining. It's almost like a relaxed challenge to see who can take an idea and make it the most stimulating, interesting, attractive etc. I don't like fast fashion either - but I think that long term trends are an area which is a reflection of people collectively enjoying something and having fun with it.

My teenage self is giggling because I started wearing alternative clothing and people first bullied me and then 2 or 3 months later would wear similar items. I do follow trends because I buy ready to wear mostly and then customise things how I like. The only time I think I genuinely ignore trends is the seasonal colour palettes. I know what colours I like so if this year is mustard yellow it can go take a hike.

there´s a certain style in this or that decade, and there´s fast changing trends, like those tattoo necklaces and off-shoulder-shirts. I dont wear that, so I´m not following that day trends. I do wear tight jeans, but there´s a difference between doing that and modifying your whole appearance after the latest magazines.

I remember the change from flaired to skinny jeans happening (in the uk) in the mid 2000s. I loved 'emo culture' and alwaysed asked my mum for a pair of black skinny jeans. She said they'd go out of fashion in a month but it's 10 years later and I've only just moved onto 'boyfriend style' jeans.

I don't consider myself a trendsetter, but as a 90s/ early 2000s kid, I could never pull off baggy jeans (being 5'2", and not super-petite), so slimmer cut jeans were always what I gravitated towards, otherwise would have been drowned in fabric. Even today, I don't think I look good in more fad pieces like bell/ oversized sleeves, 3/4 length skirts, and huge ruffles. I do however follow comfort, and what I think looks best on my figure, which as you've aptly pointed out, is a trend in itself :)

I think I do follow trends, just mostly not the same ones as most of the people around me. I probably would wear clothes like those of older generations if they were still available. Sadly, most of that stuff was handmade and don't have the time or patience to learn how to sew like that. So I just stick with the closest things that I can find. However, I do like the stretchy, comfortable clothing.

I’m trying to do a low buy year by only letting myself get a couple of colors. I’ve tried and failed no-buy clothing goals. So I’m only letting myself get white (undershirts), black (pants), mustard yellow (I look good in this color and like the color), aspen gold (pale yellow), and the Pantone color of the year coral (I’m looking for a single sweater in that color). Maybe brown or grey for layering or pants. But very limited color palette. Which means more than half the store is off limit. So if I can’t even try it on, I won’t buy it! That’s my logic.

When I was in around 6th grade (US) was when slim jeans started to really come back (I know they were a thing in the 80s). I've been a bigger girl all my life and they didn't come in my size, and really weren't much in kids clothing anyway. Finally by 8th grade I found some at TJ max that I could wear. However, all that said, I'd been wanting jeans like them all my life! I hated how "regular" pants looked on me, and being short they would never be the right length and would end up in tatters.

Hmmm. 2019 but in 2016 [and still] my teen daughter liked tight straight leg/skinny jeans [ick] and I continue to stick with my standby from way back i.e. late 70's early 80's: flood flares with Italian block boots or my belted vintage flood 501's with Doc Martens. Were they trends or did they just work with my body type and style so I keep them around? Part of my uniform.

Hi Justine. Is it possible to buy classic style clothes (that aren’t trend focused) from ‘fast fashion’ stores. Even though I don’t want to follow trends, i find seasonal in-style items everywhere i look. You said previously that when you need an item you search online for that specific item and buy only that. Can i use the same tactic in a mall. I like to try on and there aren’t so many slow fashion stores to choose from. H&m has the conscious range and so does mango but sometimes a trend can be seen even in those categories. I want to buy clothes that are not following the latest trends and i find i very difficult to do.

I would have said something like this. However, my trend is based on the 70s! Bell bottoms, bell sleeves, patchwork, embroidered button-downs are my favorite. I also love lacy stuff from Nightcap. I guess I'm more Bohemian chic. it's impossible not to follow trends because that's what you were buying in the store if you aren't shopping at thrift stores only. When I say I don't follow trends, I mean I don't care about fitting in. I like what I like. I take trends from the twenties all the way to the 2000s and into account. I Love shirt dresses, and knee and thigh high boots and booties as well. I think I'm more on trend with shoes more than anything else. It's not thats I want to portray my trends to the world, there are just some things I really like that I don't see on everyone. I was wearing high waisted jeans and leggings in the 2000s as well. I also wore...um, logos. Never will I wear another because I'm not giving any company free advertising. I could talk about this stuff all day. That's why I love this channel.

As an old fart I don't care much about fashion. But because of your adorable personality and your ability to explain all kinds of things in a very simple way I really enjoy your videos. But I think you underestimate the influence of 'trendsetters'. I agree with you that they don't set or create a trend but they are very important in finding upcoming trends and transforming a simple idea into something ordinary people can buy in a store. And then there is another important thing you forgot to mention: How do ordinary people buy clothing? I'm pretty sure that the majority of us usually go to a department store (or sometimes a smaller boutique) and just chose what they like. But what is offered in that store? Well, of course mainly clothes that follow the current trends. So even if I would like to get something else it's usually quite difficult to find it.
