    Most harmony won’t be like this. This isn’t very good harmony practice as in the real world, harmony will have pretty much identical intervalic jumps to the melody. So the high and low harmonies will just be the melody higher or lower (this is still difficult to do when you have other parts going on at the same time). This harmony challenge is not really harmony practice and more so “how well can you tune her out so you can hear yourself” which is valid but it’s more to useful to practice singing a harmony part while the melody is going on, rather than trying to sing the melody while a harmony part is going on, especially when the harmony part is convoluted and designed purely to throw you off. Like I said, it has its place but you need to practice harmonizing first.

    They're definitely super different than the ones in the original recordings, and a lot of her harmonies aren't blending with the actual chord tones, so there are lots of moments of dissonance, which is sometimes really good, but I didn't like these very much

  • @EmysOnlyPattern

    @EmysOnlyPattern

    You will get a lot more takers for this if you expand your playlist to include songs of a more “timeless” nature. For example, I would be willing to bet that 95% of the people who clicked this didn’t hesitate to take a crack at “Hey, Jude”, as compared to maybe 20% over the whole list. Why? You would be hard pressed to find ANYONE under the age of 70 (in the USA or UK, I’d say) that didn’t at least say they recognized it, but most of them would know the words, and be able come up with the melody on demand… why? This song was released over 50 years ago (1968), and remained #1 on Billboard for almost three months. For a 7+ minute song to do that was unheard of. If you want to pursue this philosophy in choosing some of your music, looking at Billboard magazine archival information would be a priceless resource for that, and there is plenty of it out there, trust me, starting with Wikipedia and Billboard’s own website. * Disclaimer * everything after this presumes a categorical rejection of anything “pop country” … Sit down with your friendly neighborhood baby-boomer music enthusiast (or just anyone of that generation, really) and start rattling off titles starting at about 1960 and they will begin spontaneously singing excerpts for you and you will be astonished at the catalog they carry in their heads, and I further predict that several times per minute you will hear: “Gosh, I haven’t heard/thought about that song since …”. (But they can still sing it for you or hum the tune nonetheless). Might be a fun way to spend some quality time with someone you’ve been meaning to do that with, but have a hard time conversing with or relating to or having much in common with. Search something like “top ten hits from 1965-1975” and you’ll be off to a good start. Just remember, “baby boomers” can be as old as 70+ and reproduce Marty Robbin’s “El Paso” or “Teen Angel” at the drop of a hat, all the way up to being able to easily sing along with “What a fool believes”, or, like myself, would say that their high school years were framed by “La Grange”, “China Grove”, or ANYTHING, and I mean ANYTHING off of Aerosmith’s “Toys in the Attic“ album, especially “Walk this way” or “Sweet Emotion”. Might be a fun experiment to do an idea for future videos.
