You shouldn't touch your yellow leaves... yet

With proper care, yellowing leaves can be a natural part of your indoor plants life. I'm not worried about it. I'm not worried about any of it.

    I didn’t believe the dying leaf was important until I had snake plant cutting which I had propagated. The new growth was thriving so I figured I should cut off the original dying prop leaf and then the new growth started dying.. quickly.

    you are a saint. i have googled 'why does my plant consistently have exactly one yellow leaf at the base of the plant' so many times and the internet is only ever prepared to talk about the entire plant is dying because I am over watering or something similarly dramatic. I eventually just gave up and watched my plants behavior and noticed that while the bottom ones would yellow slowly it would still grow new leaves from the top and otherwise looked healthy and i finally just figured "it's fine".

    I’m an underwaterer, and I’ve noticed that if I water a plant with yellow leaves and pull the yellowing leaves off at the same time, I get more yellowing. I recently read that the super dry plant can’t drink all it needs right away, so it’s still relying on those yellowing leaves to recover. Pull them off, and the plant just has to fire more.

    Totally agree. If yellow leaves don’t bother you, don’t bother them 💛 If you’re this person, you’re probably pretty relaxed. People like me love people like you. Your mystery is intriguing 🙃 If they only bothered you because you were weren’t aware it is natural for leaves to yellow, and that it isn’t necessarily something to be alarmed about, keep them. Become part of that first group and enjoy your chill approach to managing your plants. For those like me, who are bothered when we see yellow leaves in our collections, fertilize so your plant doesn’t mind you stealing that nutrient opportunity. It’s like find a penny, give a penny. That’s what I tell myself anyway 😜

    Thanks for this video. Right. Yellow leaves can even still photosynthesize. I have a yellow leaf on my Thaumatophyllum for at least 3 months now and it regularly “dances” (what does one call it when the leaves follows the light?🤔) in dappled sunlight. The leaf will drop on its own, or can be easily removed when slightly t pulled on once the process of abscission has taken place. Plants really don’t need us to help them “save” energy. They’ve been surviving in forests perfectly fine without us

How could I not panic? 😩 I recently repotted her into pon bc her leaves were turning yellow but she seems worse off. I’m about to look at her roots and hope to find a way to save her. Good luck! If you want to save it, you should probably take cuttings and start fresh. In my experience, a plant turning fully yellow is the result of root rot, which is usually caused by watering too frequently for the soil to dry out sufficiently. Root rot is definitely a plant killer. Just know that it doesn't make you a bad plant parent, we all struggle with certain types of plants. My step mom is the queen of plants, but she really struggles with a few varieties. And while the 30+ plants in my house right now are thriving, I have probably killed at least 8 in the last year.

  • @ildikojones7073

    @@caitolent You are so kind! Thank you for your encouraging words. I’m not sure where I went wrong; I bought her in January. She was full, in a clay pot. I used a moisture meter every time before watering. Early March she started to turn yellow and started losing leaves. I decided to switch her to pon. It didn’t help. Sigh! So this afternoon I took her out of the pot. The roots seemed ok, not mushy. But the vines had lost their bottom leaves, with the exception of one. That one I put in pon, the other four or five I cut back and put in water. Hopefully, they will grow for me. Hoping for the best but I’m prepared for defeat, if that’s what comes next.

    I have a philodendron burle marx that started to yellow almost as soon as I got it. No pests, I played around with light and *thought* I gave it enough water. It yellowed so quickly, by the time I diagnosed the issue it had lost most of its leaves. Turns out water wasn't getting to the roots properly or evenly and the roots had dry rotted. I got it in a vase of water and let it be. It went down to one, very yellow leaf, that I left alone. I think that last leaf really helped it bounce back along with moving it to water. It has since started growing and has three new leaves and the yellow one, which I'll keep until it falls off naturally. I guess my tip is, if a plant is suffering but doesn't have pests, leave the leaves alone unless they're ready to come off, they could help the plant survive and return to health

    Pro Tip: African Milk Tree | Euphorbia Trigona- it is best to wait for a yellow leaf on this plant as a sign it needs water. The plant loves to dry out in full sun 🌞 When it wants water, it will let you know. I have found my Ficus Benjamina Trees similar in showing a yellow leaf or two or three saying, aqua por favor.

    I wonder if Monstera Adansonii is like this. It’s overall happy with lots of new growth and climbing, but I do let it dry out in between waterings and every once in a while I get a BRIGHT yellow leaf at the bottom 😩 I’m certain that’s not from overwatering so 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • @serenitygardenaviary

    @serenitygardenaviary

    9 ай бұрын

    @@MayraGalland I have never grown the Adansonii, but sounds like you have it figured out. If the yellowing leaf were not the bottom older/oldest, then I would be concerned. Plants talk, we just have to understand what they are saying. My Philodendron Imperial Green does a similar thing and it frustrates me because I don't have many leaves to work with. I resorted to putting it in a smaller pot, fresh soil and fingers crossed 🤞🏾. For the Monstera, perhaps figuring out that point right before yellowing will be ideal. With my Ficus Benjamina, since I added Scindapsus trio (Exotica, Silver Satin and Pothos Pictus) to the pot with him, I rarely get yellowing leaves because Exotica leaves curl and I water. Hope this helps. Happy Growing!

If my new leaves were yellowing I would be a bit more concerned esp if it was a lot of them. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I wish I could find a way to get alocasia to stop the one in one out rule though! Those yellowing leaves make me sad 😢

    The difference in N’Joy and Pearls and jade, is that pearls and jade has green splotches/ speckling on the green parts of the plant. The green is also a bit silvery inn undertone. But green speckling/splotching on the green parts is the way to identify them. When it comes to Alocasia, it’s kind of the same concept as what is explained in this video. Alocasia drinks a lot when producing a new leaf. The plant will drop the oldest leaf, extracting all the water and nutrients from it to sustain new growth if it’s not provided with enough water. What you need to do, is to give it a little extra when you notice a new leaf coming in. If you normally water it once a week…then start to give it some water like 3 days after the initial watering. Give it just enough to where no water drips out of the drainage holes. That should be sufficient. Good luck!

    @@Latayla maybe time to upsize the pot as I water my alocasias almost every other day! They are always putting out that new leaf but always losing the oldest. Perhaps a bigger pot would keep it happier even though its not root bound 🤔 I think I am just not finding the right fertilizer to work with them 🤷🏼‍♀️ All my other plants grow like crazy, my humidity is 50-70 percent. Perhaps a self watering pot would be a good option too 😬

  • @Latayla

    @Latayla

    @@MarisaAndChew oh wow! Maybe too much water may be the issue? Every other day is a lot especially if they aren’t root bound🤔 You can repot with new soil and try watering once a week (twice a week when producing new leaves) and see how that goes. Honestly, I use any all purpose houseplant fertilizer. As long as they are vetoing those NPK’s and macro nutrients. Self watering pots may be an idea. I’m not familiar with using them. I did transfer all my Alocasia to LECA because I can’t keep up with the watering when they are actively growing. They throw a fit when transitioning, but they pull through

    Hi, I thought that pests were attracted to the yellow leaves as a sign of disease or weakness, and that it was better to remove the yellow leaves to avoid the bugs on the plant ? is it an urban (jungle) legend ?

    If it's pests, you COULD remove (depending on how extensive the damage is) and treat the plant. I did preface 'on a generally healthy plant'. I do not consider a plant that has a pest infestation bad enough to discolor leaves as a healthy plant.
