You Seriously Need to Try This Lens

This is a REVIEW of the Minolta 80-200 2.8 HS which in my book could possibly replace the need to buy a Sony 70-200 2.8 GM I or II. Does it keep up? I was able to take it out into the real world to photograph some portraits in Kobe, Japan.
Do you use an A7IV? If so, this could be the golden ticket in terms of value for you. Join me as we take a look at adapting vintage glass onto new mirrorless bodies.

So you're the culprit that caused the a mount lenses to be as expensive as they are right now. I used to see 50mm f1.4 for $50, now they're all $100+ with mold in optics.

I have had both of those lenses since I was shooting mainly a-mount, most of the old Minolta AF glass works great even on the mirrorless. I have a number of other Minolta primes and they all work surprisingly well. I currently have an a7r which is a bit frustrating because I have to chose between the ea4 and some light loss with clunky autofocus or the ea3 and manual focus. Another to check out is the Minolta MC Rokkor 58/1.2. I have mine converted to A-mount but there's no reason to do that now with mirrorless, just get a cheap adapter. Its a soft but a very nice lens. Mine is the later rubber ring version, some say the earlier metal ring version is better but I've never had the chance to try one myself.

Hi there! Thank you for a great video on this beauty of a lens. I wish I could find one for myself. But I have several other Minolta AF lenses. And I learned a way to enjoy them even more. Because on my Sony A77 and my Sony A6500 (with the Sony LA-EA4) all the Minolta AF lenses seems to backfocus (focus a little bit behind the actual target). But if I go into the the camera's menu and find the option "AF Microadjust." and change the settings to around -7 I get sharper results! And as I understand it the camera then can remember this setting for a number of different lenses. This has worked for me but I guess the results can differ between different copies of the Minolta lenses. I thought this could be of some help for you, in case you didn't know it already! 🌞

You're welcome! 🙂 Just play around with the settings there under Microadjust. If your lens instead tend to frontfocus, you do the opposite and change it to somewhere on the + scale. I guess it varies a lot on these old (but great) lenses. Enjoy!

WOW ! i need to mess with this setting, i have been using a couple Minolta lenses and also notice the focus isn't spot on. i have a A6700 and use a 70-210 and a 50 1.4 as well i really like the quality of images but i do notice the focus is always ahead of the subject even when Auto Focus says is on the eyes for example, its usually not.

Hi, , , as far as Speed and accuracy , autofocus and overall better quality in general , what would be a better choice : Minolta 80-200 2.8 , Tamron 70-200 2.8 or Sigma 70-200 2.8 ? With LA-EA4 , A to E mount , would Sony internal stabilization be sufficient using the lens that does not have optical stabilization? Or I should look for a lens in case of Tamron or Sigma that have optical stabilization to work along with Sony built-in stabilization ? Will mostly be using the camera for portraits, with strobe mights or without , and sometimes occasionally moving objects, but nothing to extreme, I would really appreciate your input on this ,thanks much !!!

Thanks for watching and commenting! If you're planning on buying in Japan, it looks like 50,000 yen or about $350 is the max for most that I'm seeing on used sites (for the 80-200 f2.8). I wasn't able to find it in any local stores, but if you do, you may be able to get an even better deal. For the 200mm f2.8 I'm seeing around 40,000 yen or about $275 for that one. It may be worth checking if some Japanese sites ship abroad. You could maybe get a good deal that way too depending on shipping costs and if they ship internationally.

  • @ShibiChan

Not sure about the G-designated version, but the difference between the white and black is that the white is slightly newer, with the HS meaning high speed, so auto focus is going to be quicker than the older version. White also has a dedicated focus-hold button which I believe the black doesn't. In terms of image quality I see many people say they are indistinguishable

Minolta 80-200 G APO HS. have one .. I use it with my A900 It's a beaut .. Still using it daily here 2023 🤗 Not being able to focus " close in " this lens excells at stand off ( beyond 4ish feet ) portrait's even in low light situations. It's brilliant at shooting any thing that doesn't require " tac sharp " image ( I.e Pastel type multiple layer composite's and HDR ) as highlighted in this review, the " autofocus" is sluggish by 2023 standards. If like me, youI grew up with manual focus kit. It's won't be an issue.. 🤗 ------- In regard to the 50 1.4 I have its slightly slower brother ( f1.7 ) It's a Great lens. I actually use it quite a lot with a 2x Teleconverter plus the Minolta Micro Adapter lens ( Makes a nice 100mm ( macro) ).. Again mostly MANUAL focus .. The " macro adapter is 49mm screw in single element lens, which Half's the minimum focal distance of any 49mm filter ring lens ) .. Suggest also get either the 24 or 28 prime ( I have the 28 F2.8 ) Then your have a 3 lens set coving Wide ( 24 ) to Telephoto ( 200 ) If you add the 2x Teleconverter 24 - 400 🤗 Enjoy.. Almost forgot to mention.. The 80 - 200 is one HEAVY piece of glass 😀
