You’re Too Clean, and It’s Messing With Your Immune System

Ғылым және технология

New research shows living in environment that’s too clean can compromise your immune system’s ability to fight disease. Here's what you should know.

Can You Be Too Clean?
www.bbc.com/future/story/20151118-can-you-be-too-clean
“Some scientists also tell us that being too clean is also wrong, because it might help cause asthma and allergies. So is there a balance between keeping obsessively clean and learning to live with the bacteria all around us?”
Getting the dirt on immunity: Scientists show evidence for hygiene hypothesis
www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/03/120322142157.htm
“Medical professionals have suggested that the hygiene hypothesis explains the global increase of allergic and autoimmune diseases in urban settings. However, neither biologic support nor a mechanistic basis for the hypothesis has been directly demonstrated. Until now.”
The ‘hygiene hypothesis’ for autoimmune and allergic diseases: an update
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2841828/
“According to the ‘hygiene hypothesis’, the decreasing incidence of infections in western countries and more recently in developing countries is at the origin of the increasing incidence of both autoimmune and allergic diseases. The hygiene hypothesis is based upon epidemiological data, particularly migration studies, showing that subjects migrating from a low-incidence to a high-incidence country acquire the immune disorders with a high incidence at the first generation.”

I have observed this at work. The people I see who obsessively reach for the hand sanitizer, every few minutes, tend to be the people who succumb to illnesses the most. Like your muscles, if you don't present a moderate challenge to your immune system, every once in a while, it will wither the way muscles atrophy due to inactivity. As someone who lived in a village in India when I was a toddler, for a year in a half, where I was subject to running bare foot in the mud, using the bathroom outside, and being in close proximity to farm animals, I go for long stretches of time as an adult- as long as 5 years straight - without ever getting a cold or fever. My pampered coworkers, on the other hand, who grew up in environments that were disinfected by overbearing mothers and fathers, get sick multiple times a year.

forever young that's insanity. I do clean switches though twice in a year, but because it gets dirt. Other than that there is really no need to sterilize extremely everything. Do wash hand, but don't wash hands every half hour. Yeah! Sweat cannot be good , you need a bath once for sure. Sweat is a good thing in a way its a natural process to excrete wastes which doesn't usually gets out through poop or pee. Sweat is good, but staying in sweaty clothes for hours seems not good idea. Imagine your Immune System like a Defense System, Thousands of Armies and Soldiers who are ready to fight external enemies. So, if you already had a war with one country before , its very much likely whenever the same country attacks again, you will be always more stronger than before, because you know their weaknesses. Hence, you are stronger than before. The more your soldiers gets exposed to varieties of external militants the more they are experienced and expert in handling fight. But imagine if there is an army of soldier of a nation who haven't fought a single war in centuries or decades. Its very much likely , they are not gonna be able to handle the emergency situations very well. So, that's why it's said, get some exposure to dirt and soil. Its good for your Immune system. Our ancestors lived and did farming for their whole lives in dirt and soil. They weren't clearly falling sick of out it. Damnit!

Sorry to break it to you but this is utterly untrue and not supported by science. I am continuously flabbergasted by people’s layman’s understanding of “hygiene”. Let me tell you that the amount and diversity of germs we encounter grows day by day. Imagine going to your local grocery and picking up any fruit or veggie there. How many borders has it passed, how many countries, climates and hands has that little Avacado passed? Shipping containers are one of the most diverse ecosystems because they are pulled all over the world, the products we consume have seen the world. Back in the day, yes things were grimier, muddier but the germs we faced on a daily were usually the same few. We can argue about the health of our gut or how antibiotics and pesticides or any other toxin might influence allergies and hygiene, but I promise a little soap is not the reason we are in this situation. The hygiene hypothesis has been declared untrue by most reasonable institutions.

Future Aests Once a day maximum of four of seven days as a period.. if for a ten days or a month you wash yourself.. you get sick and in a very unexpected way.. not only in that period but within the season or within a year's time.. lest the hygenic materials we use devestate our immune system.. the scents in them (scents themselves as nano-dimention atomic laser radiation) and their chemically effective matterials (positive-negative electrical stances) terribly choke our immune system along with what mere CLEAN water could do. However it really is a basic need at least two or three times a weak as one should thake a good shower that imcludes the cleaning of thr dead skin particles on our body and should not be less than once a week under normal circumstances or on normal conditions.

  • @Belicose777

Apophis STR being clean and sanitation are somewhat different. When you dump human defecation outside onto the street or in the surrounding and immediate area including some local water sources it's no wonder you get sick with potentially serious disease. The practices of the olden days were extremely unsanitary as the existence of germs and microbial life weren't discovered. I know now that I shouldn't handle raw meat and then grab an apple and eat it. All kinds of E.coli and other food borne bacteria/virus. I don't think the video is suggesting you stop washing your hands all together. Simply that some natural exposure to dirt germs does the body good.

  • @AdamSmith-gs2dv

No one is arguing against sanitation, the issue is a certain group of people who constantly wash or sanitize their hands the so called germophobes who by constantly washing and sanitizing are actually making it more likely they will get extremely sick if they do get something since their immune system isn't trained to fight the germs off! Also that 0.1% of bacteria left can cause serious issues as they will evolve and eventually become super bacteria.

Studies show that having a pet has benefits. They suggest this can add years to life expectancy. However, few are aware of how easily a pet can pass parasites to people. And many people are walking around unaware of the parasites in their body, clueless. Fortunately, there are ways to eliminate parasites, including through herbs like Black Cohosh. Don't believe me: Look it up. Do your own research on this. Think for yourself.

Whenever I see an ad for a cleaning product that claims "Kills 99.99% of all germs on contact", I can't help but worry about that 0.01%. Those are the superbugs, and by killing off their competition, we encourage their growth and spread. I try to avoid using such products in my home, and I have always kept my immune system busy by not obsessing over cleanliness. I'm in remarkably good health, and I haven't had a cold or flu in so long that I can't remember my last one. Those ads should really say "DOES NOT KILL 0.01% of all germs on contact"

Nanna Leifa It’s because of the fact that rich countries have better hygiene, killing cells that would help regulate severe reactions. Mostly though because in 1st world countries pretty much every case is being reported due to access to immediate medical care. If I lived in Indonesia, on a farm, and I started breaking out from peanut butter. I’m not spending my family’s life savings to take a bus to the hospital. Pretty narrator! It's true that our bodies and skin (the largest organ) are designed to co-exist with microbe populations. Our gut (specifically the large intestine) houses so many, and many actually aid in digestion. Antibiotics remove 'good' bacteria, hence why eating yogurt (probiotics with new bacteria culture) is recommended afterwards. It's also true that the immune response becomes 'molded' by exposure to anything which stimulates immune response...there are special cells designed to carry 'memory' of harmful exposure. People have even used viruses which normally 'fly under the immune system's radar' to modify human DNA!

1:20 Isn't much the fact that we are "killing off too much good bacteria" more than the fact that we don't get in contact with it as often as we used to, especially in our early life when immune system gets toughen. In a broader view, more you try to protect someone/something from particular dangers or inconvenient more you are going to leave them defenseless and clueless against it!

I believe this because I used to live alone I didnt get sick for 5 years, I work from home as well. I recently moved in a condo 2 1/2 months ago and let people move in since I have extra space. I was sick 2x with respiratory infection and had a sore throat 3x within 6 weeks, plus sinus headaches. Now my doc is telling me I might have allergies, never had allergies in my life. I was thinking its mold spores in the air or something, but the landlord claims its not 😬 Im getting an allergy test soon. I already had CT scan to check sinus and Chest xray to make sure it wasnt pneumonia or something. I havent had a cold for the last couple weeks but sometimes I do have sinus headaches or a little clear mucas in my nose/post nasil drip, and I never used to have this. Its like my body is fighting whatever its in the air irritating me. But no itchy eyes or throat, Ive never had that, which is why I dont think I have allergies 🤷🏾‍♂️

NO. DON'T oversimplify like you did when ending the video. The microbiome is an incredibly complex system that no one fully understands yet, so it's no one's place - and especially not yours! - to give advice on it. All we KNOW is that exposure to more germs likely increases some resistance to some things. That doesn't mean you should go lick the dirt though! Blunt exposure to harmful organisms is more likely to make you more sick in the short term than to benefit you in the long term. If there is anything that maybe could be inferred from current evidence, is maybe we're overly clean and maybe we should try to cut back a bit. Just some though. Maybe don't shower everyday. Maybe don't wash your hands so thoroughly and so often. But nothing on the scale of how this video ends. Irresponsible.

Ive always said and thought this since I was a teen. Why you ask? I took medicine everytime I was sick, cold didnt go away for a few days, all it did sometimes was put me to sleep. I was sick and missed an average 5-8 days a year. I got annoyed with medicine not doing anything. So I stopped first year sick 3-4 times decreasinig. 15 years later I get the cold once or twice in 3 years. I also no longer have asthma and cuts seem to heal faster. Also figured out a roll of wide clear tape (like 3" packing tape) heals cuts faster and better than bandaids. blood builds up under clear tape, as cut turns to scab the blood dries. It also seems that blood under the tape creates moisture along with body heat Ive noticed a condensation effect. Eventually the red blood is just completely gone as though the body can reabsorb it. my cuts gone in about 6 hours or less look completely healed except for a noticeable white patch where new skin has formed, kind of like when you can peel skin usually hands and feet from blisters, being in water too long or similar. The healed skin is closer to what being in water for too long does to you.

I generally prefer to have at least one messy room in my house at any given time for the above mentioned reasons. Also, in caring for my pet mice, I clean the cages on a rotation. We actually have 5 cages connected by tubes for a dozen mice and the mice are free to move about between cages, so by cleaning in a rotation they always have at least 1 fully clean cage and 1 fully dirty cage and 3 cages between the two.
