It's 2003, and the war on terror continues. On October 7, 2001, a U.S.-led coalition launched attacks on Taliban-controlled Afghanistan with an intense bombing campaign by American and British forces.
After an exhausting day of relentless fighting, your squad has managed to push back the enemy, but in the distance, the fighting continues.
Who knows what tomorrow will hold, but for now, It's time to get your head down for the night under the starry skies of Afghanistan.

As a vet of both Afghanistan and Iraq, this sounds more like Iraq; Baghdad to be more specific. In Afghanistan, at least where I was on both tours there 2011 and 2012, we were in such a remote areas away from large cities, the only gun fire we heard was directed at us. There was no sleeping. We were too busy returning fire. However, in Baghdad, Iraq, 2005-2006, in a huge city of millions, there was always sporadic gunfire, day and night. And there was the occasional explosions from IEDs, mortars or rockets somewhere off in the distance...unless, once again, they were directed at us. Iraq, 2009 and 2010, there was little gun fire, but still a lot of IEDs and VBIEDs (car bombs). The insurgents knew they couldn't go head to head in a gun battle, so they avoided those for the most part, but they had stepped up their attacks with new and more sophisticated explosives which were remotely detonated or victim activated. In other words, very little exchange of gun fire.

There was one night in Baghdad, when the sky came alive with thousands of tracers... we wondered, "What in THEE hell is going on"? and we thought we were under siege by the whole damn city... come to find out, Iraq had just beaten Syria in a soccer match and everyone was celebrating by firing their AK's up in the air... craziest looking and sounding shit ever.

I was sleeping, and in my dream, I could distinctly hear a Dshk heavy machine gun. So I was like, man this dream is going to be so awesome. But then the 50 cal right next to me responded to the TIC I was in, so I had to get up and go to work.

Some thoughts. As a veteran, I appreciate the distant gunfire and distant artillery mixed with the wind or rain of the night. A lull in the fighting where you half sleep and recover. One criticism… the close and louder gunfire would get me moving again, so you might want to tone that down.

I was there in 2011-2012 Helmend Province and I was outside of a village in a little area called the R3P, it was like a makeshift PB. Anyway you could hear some gun fire because we had units clearing the town. I dont remember crickets. Also the only fire we had was the burn pit. Radio chatter is on point, I was a Radio Operator myself. If only this came with "smell-o-vision" so you could smell the only good way to describe it is shit mixed with rotting potatoes/body odor smell.

September 12th, 2003 2 years after me and my friend got called back to do some more fighting for the military, I didn't think we would be fighting across a empty, scorching desert against some terrorists who were all eager to receive all types of weapons to accomplish their reign of terror. In case your not aware of what I'm talking about, the location is Afghanistan. Thid place is so empty, it's almost like a ghost region instead of just a ghost town. And unlike Vietnam, it only took 5 weeks before we got attacked for the first time. This might possibly be the worst fight for survival I found myself in, not just because of the heat, but because it's more open instead of being surrounded by trees, that increases the chance of the Taliban getting to us. I hate to say this, but I feel legitimately scared for the first time in my career. I just gotta push through though. For now, I'll try to get some sleep, and just pray the enemy doesn't decimate us all as we dream about our life back at home. The life we know we can return to...

Unless you've been there you won't understand this but as far as "SOUND" goes... for both Iraq and Afghanistan..... 2 words.... WILD DOGS. Or feral but lets not mince words. Bottom line is... Wild Dogs are a problem out there. They give away your position and they can be close or far but that damn barking..... Feel FREE to add in some dog barking. I almost had to shoot an Alpha dog on a night mission in Baghdad. It was the Alpha because it was the head of the pack. We were trying to sneak around in the city and out of nowhere this pack descended upon us. It was dark and after curfew... pretty dimly lit area. They all barked at us but especially this massive Alpha mutt... pretty much gave away our position... it got really close... i was about to shoot... didn't want to because of the noise but i was so damn close to smoking this dog.. but it came about 15 ft from where i was kneeling under some buildings roof that jutted out and the dog just laid down and only barked occasionally. I held my fire and we backed out of there after a couple minutes of that dog laying down. J bad in Astan ... man they had wild dogs all over the fucking place... always barking from a bit of a distance... at night.. just standing about a hundred to 2 or 3 hundred yards off from our house... just barking from the bushes/tall grass.. you could see them through a starlight thermal.. it was eerie watching them stand there facing our house... barking at us from 150 yds away... like they hated us.
