same...except when my cat clearly wants me to come to him. It's pretty obvious: I get up from my desk to get a drink or whatever, and he rolls over in his bed and strikes a "ohhhh I am soooooo cute you just have to come over here and pet me for a moment" pose, complete with a few slow blinks in my direction ;) It really is an invitation, and I usually oblige him. Then I go get my drink and he goes back to sleep.

I have had cats for 4 decades and all loved lots of cuddling and petting, until Argyle the Maine Coon. Jackson, your videos have been essential. Argyle's nervous system is finely tuned such that that the slightest action on my part has a big impact on him. The finger-nose, which initially felt like deprivation, was received with purring, soft curl at the end of his tail, and rolling onto his back and exposing his tummy. He was so cute! I had to discipline myself not to do a big cuddle and instead 1) touch only his nose 2) talk softly and slowly. He loves it! Less is more.

actually no, it's not common knowledge that cats like belly rubs. Many cats dislike belly rubs, unlike dogs. A cat rolling over to expose its belly means it trusts you because it's exposing it's most sensitive part, if you pet them there they can see it as an attack

  • @lisar3944

This is such good advice. My favorite technique is to just start gently scratching my cat somewhere on his head, then I leave my hand in the same spot with my fingers making the scratching motion, and he moves his head around to get the scritches where he wants them. And no matter how you do it, as Jackson says, watching their body language is absolutely key. If you pay even the least amount of attention, you will never face a "surprise" attack again.

The ‘MichaelAngelo finger pointing’ at my cat changed my life thank you lol. Thought my cat had a three pat tolerance haha now she adores the gentle concentrated affection from just simple head scratches and head strokes. She’ll never be a lap cat but my ‘slow blink’ at her which I also learned from you is our telepathic ‘I love you’ hehehe 😽💗

  • @pyro-millie5533

Dude as someone with anxiety and ADHD, you just described what overstimulation feels like almost perfectly! I’ll add that all inputs (sights sounds etc) can also become jarring and even painful, and anything even close to touching you can start feeling clausterphobic, even your own body hairs. “Static buildup” describes that “trapped in your own skin” feeling perfectly omg! I’m a lot better than I used to be as a kid and teen about respecting cats’ cuddle limits, and my current kitty really loves snuggling and being pet, but she and I are still working on communicating about her stopping point. She’s really sweet and patient, so with petting to long, the only thing other than a “claws in” warning smack I’ve gotten is a “I’m gonna bite ya, move bitch!” Threat that results in a slow non- skin breaking bite if I don’t listen to her fast enough. Like a mama would give a kitten. I do my best to notice when she’s had enough before then, but if I miss that point or come back too soon after stopping there, the “final warnings” she gives definitely makes it clear she’s done. I respect the hell out of her patience, and I’m trying to make sure I respect her boundaries better.

  • @pyro-millie5533

To add to this, my cat flicks her tail when she’s calm and content, and happy to have someone nearby, like a dog does. I know of a single other cat who has this “backward” tail behavior. So sometimes its hard to tell that apart from the warning tail swish until its too late. She lets me play with her tail like a fuzzy fidget toy when she’s relaxed too, so really the only warning she gives me with it is if she starts pulling it away if I try to pet it. Sometimes really subtle ear flicks, paired with a slightly sour “mrrrrrow” but rarely ever traditional “overt” cat signs like the angry tail wag or pinned ears. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard her hiss, and only rarely have I seen her fur raise a little. Her body language is so subtle, and its readable because she expresses a lot with her big eyes, but definitely different than what’s “expected” for kitties. She also loves when I do the nose boop leading into her guiding pets. If I do any kind of full body pets, its never with a flat hand or a lot of pressure. The way I pet most critters, her included, is more of a “back scratch” - light touch that gets down into the soft floof. She loves her cheeks, chest, ears, and shoulders pet, and her tail woven through my fingers as she moves it. Such a sweetie.

So I think the thing that I love so much about your videos is that you are showing people how to not interfere with a cat being a cat. Too many people seem to have a cat but want a dog. Cats are so immensely rewarding as companions if you simply respect them and let them be cats. The reward of a cat choosing to be around you is immense. I wish people would remember that these are not automatons that are made to respond to human stimulus in a certain way. These are sentient beings who deserve to be treated with respect and kindness.

My cat does the cutest thing when you hold up objects or hands to her. Everyone who know her calls this inspection. She must first smell the item, consider it carefully for a couple seconds, and then either look down in disapproval or head-bonk it if it is approved. The finger-nose thing reminded me of that. Anyway, it’s so cute! Any time she wants attention and there are items nearby, she just looks up at the local human until they hold up an item and say, “Inspeck?” And she just lights up when someone asks her to inspect something, it’s so goddamn cute

I'm 6 years late to this but my cat doesn't have that reaction. Usually, when I pet my cat, he will settle down and relax. Sometimes he will lay down and fall asleep. Often, he will look at me with semi closed eyes and just chill out with me. However, I pay attention to my cat and know his stimulation points. Usually, the areas I pet him are places I know he likes the most. Usually, that's around his face, on his cheeks, under his neck and on the top of his head. However, I stroke him slowly on those places and don't do it for long. Basically, I took the time to get to know him. I also know when to stop based on his body language. It takes time to get to know a cat but once a relationship is built and knowing their level of comfort, things can be absolutely great between a cat and his parent (the human companion).

I watched my cat from hell and I just discovered that you had all of these social medias so I’ve been BINGING everything. There’s one common denominator I’ve noticed, and I feel like I’ve learned that I’ve known all along, but haven’t applied enough in my kitty routine through these videos. That all you need to do is have empathy for your cat 🥲 literally just put yourself in their shoes (or lil paw paws in this case) and you’ll be shown loyalty and friendship. We all know that our feline friends are intelligent, but we seriously underestimate their emotional intelligence as well and I feel that’s where lots of people run into problems. Respect their space and treat them as you would a human friend and you have a companion until the end. 😭 Thank you for spreading your knowledge ✊🏻

I have two cats, one of which I recently rescued a few months ago. My first cat Twilight is VERY clear on how much she wants to be pet. When she’s done, she’ll swat at me or bite me. And she absolutely DESPISES belly rubs so I never give her any. My second cat Jewels on the other hand is very very sweet. She LOVVESSS belly rubs. She’ll stretch out as I pet her fluffy belly and then roll back over and muzzle my hand. When she’s done being pet, she’ll simply walk away. Big difference in pettings, but I love them both so much ❤

I love that your 23 year old is in this vid. Our oldest right now is 25. We started rescuing to honor our Baby Kitty, who spent 29 wonderful years with my family. She picked us that day in that Humane Society,& I’m thankful she did, as she taught me so much about the language of cats. When she slowly went deaf it really didn’t matter much, she still understood us & we understood her. We made some slight changes for her convenience, of course. You learn so much by just watching them😀

I think my cat gravitates towards me because I don't over bear him with petting. I'll give him a little rub on the cheeks and chin every so often, but let him chill for the most part. But this is only when he comes to me and sits on my lap. When they come to you and start doing the head boops, that's also a good signal that they want to be petted and when they're in that mood they rarely attack. Basically, let them come to you. Never force them into a situation.

My cat's doesn't like to much petting. But loves being with me she'll sleep on me under me at the moment she's watching bird videos on KZread and has wrapped herself around my feet. I can't reach her but she wants to be touching me. She has never hissed lost her cool. When I pick her up she goes straight to my shoulder like a furry parrot and we'll go around the house looking at things. We play hide and seek or we'll play fetch. At night she asks for cuddles maybe 2/3 times a night sometimes she doesn't come at all but when she comes to me she'll purr and purr and pad and falls asleep next to me. Life is good and I wouldn't change anything about her.

Manuela Machado Sounds like you have a easily over stimulated (by petting) kitty...aren't they like dogs in how certain cats with their different personalities seem to do better with certain personalities in people? I used to have 2 kitties myself (a tiny calico and a huge long haired white kitty) and talk about different personalities with those two but I managed to figure them out and treated them in entirely different ways when they both were with me. (my big white kitty would LOVE to sleep between my legs and the calico would always sleep on my left shoulder about 95% of the time...the other 5% was what I liked to call her "middle of the night crazy hour" lolsss) but they both slept on me in those same spots pretty much the whole time I had them and YES I Miss them both now too and now, I haven't had a new cat after them for about the last 5 or 6 years by now

Just like Jackson shows they will connect their nose to the tip of my finger and then guide my hand either to their ear or under the chin. I do pet them in other ways, but the "Nose Touch" kinda let's them know right away that they are in control of the petting.

As in almost every one of Jackson's videos, it's all about learning your cat and the techniques he uses to communicate with you. I'm raising a young kitten right now and one of the things I had to recognize is, while he's a very affectionate kitten, he DOES NOT like to have his fur stroked for extended periods. So I've trained myself to scratch his ears, or rub his cheeks for a very short time (less than 30 seconds) and then stop. He used to just get up and move away if I pet him too long. Now he's much more comfortable sitting in my lap for extended periods.... Pay attention! Your cat is trying to tell you what he likes and what he doesn't!

  • @tigresmom5654

Yes, thanks for the reminder to not take it personally when they communicate that they're done being petted or not liking how they're being petted. I keep getting my feelings hurt when my cat hisses or swats at me. I'm like, I'm trying to love you! Why don't you love me back? I'm so used to my late cats who were so loving and affectionate.

Tom Long Every one of my cats for 40+ years has learned to love their belly rubbed. It's true, it's not something cats do normally because it's something earned to the owner, like trust or respect with humans. To have a cat show it's belly willingly is the greatest honor they can bestow on their owner. But again, it's something earned, not just given away naturally.

I have a roommate that pets the cat for hours then when he pushes the cat off he comes over and jumps on my lap and puts his head under my arm to be pet. We had a 7 yr old, a 6 yr old and a 5 yr old (siblings) over that had never had a cat before and they were picking him up and petting his fur backwards and holding him for a full 3 days including at night and he never ran away from them or bit them or anything. Then after they left he ran around the house crying looking for them for 2 days! He is always excited when they visit.

I adopted an 8 year old cat a year and a half ago. She was very shy and afraid of everything to the point she did not use the liter in the shelter as she was so afraid of the other cats. I felt sad for her and decided she needed someone who could help her. I have PTSD from a decade of living on the streets while going through major depression. So I kinda had an idea of what happened to her. She is a cat with PTSD. I even found the lower left canine tooth was broken out, along with a bit of facial damage. I can see where her PTSD came from. That part may never go away. It has not for me, and I understand it. It took four months to get her to come out from under the bed. She did come out when I was not around to use the litter and eat. After she came out, it was another month before I could detect a purr. Now days she still has the PTSD, and easily frightens, but she is pretty much a normal cat otherwise. This video is a good thing for me to learn as I HAVE been doing it wrong and have seen the signals in this video. Angel thanks you.

Do you suggest any technique that you did to acclimate your scary cat. Mine definitely has PTSD and I do as well. She’s been with me 9 months and has come a long way but she’s going backwards now and I’m lost as what to do next to keep our relationship as she won’t play with me and I can not pick her up. She’s afraid to sit on furniture so she’s never really close to me

@@lisazappala4381 whan I got her she was terrified. She hid under the full sized bed. I could not get to her. She did sneak out to her litter and I gave her food under the bed. So, for two months, I just laid on the floor talking to her in sweet sounding stuff. After that point, she started coming over to me, just to the very point that I could just feel her fur, just lightly. But even with that, she was a ball of fire. For months I had scraps and cuts. I ALMOST was about to take her back. Then I remembered that two other people adopted her, and brought her back after they found she was too feral. I thought about that, and the trauma and abuse she got. She is a pure black cat. I could not do that to her. I made a decision that if it came to it, I was going to give her a home. It took her a few months to settle down and realize she was in the best place she could be. She obviously has PTSD from her life of abuse. She even has a tooth knocked out. So being a veteran with PTSD, (not from war), so I just dealt with her like that. Being a former professional intuitive reader, I opened up to Spirit intuitively guiding me with helping her. It is four years now. She is the sweetest little cat I could hope for. She gives me lots of love. Just open yourself to Spirit guiding you. That's where I got the idea to lay on the floor, talking to her. I believe Spirit uses out intuition to communicate. It is why some people can "talk" to their pets and other animals. I believe animals have a very well developed sense of intuition.

I’m unable to get on the floor due to a back injury so getting on her same level I know will help but I’m unable to accomplish that. She won’t get up on furniture either so again that same level thing isn’t happening yet. She’s definitely my most damaged feral cat. My others stayed more afraid of environment but were very snuggly with just my daughter and myself. I guess time will tell. Like you I wouldn’t return her as she’s not destructive just needs a special kind of love. I’m a very nurturing person, so she’s in the right place. Jackson Galaxy Dude, your videos should be shown to kids in elementary. It´s easy-to-acquire knowledge, and yet so many people don´t know to "read" their pet. I really do think that in a society with that many pets like the western society, things like this should be taught at an early age. It´s existential for a good bond with the animal, and happiness for both owner and pet. I doff my hat, guv´nah!

I noticed he liked to rub against our hands with his mouth and sometimes his back. I will say, when we got out of the shower he loved to be pet, but he would usually play "Gotcha" at that time too. I think it was because we had washed off his scent, or the smell of the soap put him into a weird mode.

I’m loving the finger/nose maneuver.! I always offer my finger to my cats and cars who are unfamiliar with me as a way to Dee if they want any attention! Sort of like I’m asking permission. We laugh about how our cats are « self-petting »! They kind of do a head bump and pop my hand up or over to what they want petted or scratched.

  • @catsclaws5471
    @catsclaws54718 жыл бұрын

I have a two cats and they like being petted differently. One love the all over body rub, yes even his belly, and the other only likes his face rubbed and I do mean rubbed he will scrub his face all over your hand to get you to rub at just the right pressure. But both love the under the chin scratch the most. LOL!

My little guys is the most gentle sweetheart of a kitten but he’s also very very playful. He has endless energy it seems and he’s about 6mo old. He doesn’t seem to like to be pet that often and is kinda bitey most of the time. He basically follows me around all day gently biting my ankles and grabs my hands when I pet him. He is super super gentle. I’ve never met a cat so gentle. He just loves to play. Will he sort of grow out of this kind of hyper play? It doesn’t bother me, I just want him to feel safe. He looks pretty relaxed he just doesn’t especially like for someone to walk up to him and touch him. I like the finger nose technique. I’m definitely going to use that one.

My cat loves being pet even pretty roughly. However, he doesn't like being picked up or his tail being pet. He used to dislike his rear legs being touched, but novadays he doesn't mind that either.

For picking up cats you have to let them go immediately when they want to go. If you don't do that they will feel trapped. I also let my cat sit on my arms instead of holding her. And If I feel some tension I ask if she wants to go. Then she says 'I want to go' or she relaxes because now she knows she can go whenever she wants and that I won't exceed her limits ..or how you say that in English.

  • @TheMoonatDawn

I had 2 cats and 1 of them would sit and be stroked for ever but the other was like your cat. He didn't like being petted and didn't like being picked up either. His most comfortable stroking position was when he weaved in and out of my legs as I was walking. Then he'd accept a stroke or two.

Yup. Also, if they're nervous, not looking directly at them for too long can help. I also purr at them sometimes; that's more or less their language to show they're not threatening, so I figure I can try to communicate in their language since they can't really learn ours.
