I really like this type of content because people need to hear it and see it. What's normal right now is very unhealthy. People often think I'm thin, but im only smaller than average. I need to lose body fat and build more lean muscle. At that point I'm sure people will start being "worried " about me. This world is crazy.

@@jonsmith9728don't agree, most men who need to recomp simply need to start lifting heavy without cutting calories. A lot of men are skinny fat, in these cases, cutting fat will just hinder your body composition goals. You need to build a frame first before worrying about bf percentage

I still think it would be interesting if you could get pictures of people at say, 15, 25, and 35% body fat, but very low muscle mass, mostly average muscle mass, and way above average muscle mass. When I started exercising I estimate I was in the range of 35-40% body fat, but my issue was actually a wildly frail and under muscled body so anyone glancing I just looked pretty normal. I only dropped weight from 162 to 150, but put on somewhere in the range of 16lbs of muscle in the past couple years (very casual) so that means I lost somewhere around 28lbs of fat over the same time frame. I look wildly different but my weight actually only dropped by about 7.5%.

Way to go! I agree, I’m on the opposite side started at 125lbs at 5’10” and now weight 180lbs at 6’2” absolute crazy transformation looking back… I’d say about 15-20lbs of that was far but I look about as lean so weight of the fat really depends on height as well

It's easier to get to lower body fat when having more muscle (due to higher metabolism). When I got down to 15 (or 16) % I looked the best really. However, maintaining 15 % is too hard for me , so I decided to do a lean bulk and maintain about 20% In future, I plan to cut to 15% and try to maintain when I have more muscle

Excellent idea. The genetic component (ratio of white muscle fibres vs red, different ratios of types of fat storage and locations of storage) will still give individual variations - but having the trio of muscle levels with body fat would be an amazing poster/infographic. It's a shame Greg doesn't seem to have a big media team who actually monitor the comments. There's a lot of great interactions happening in. The comments sections that gets missed (like yours).

Yeah but like it’s been stated a thousand times, some people store body fat differently. I use to have body fat more evenly distributed, I could look better at a higher body fat vs no where I’m more concentrated in the mid section. In order to get rid of this stubborn body fat in my midsection I’d have to destroy my body to get proportional fat across my body. Although 12% wouldn’t look bad, I would personally probably have to get in the upper single digits to get my body fat distribution in check then hit 12% body fat and hope the fat distributes evenly.

@@Dwq47 I'm the same way. Had to get to about 8% to see any lower ab definition and I had to end the diet (side effects of diet fatigue were getting too intense) before I could get the definition to really pop. Unfortunately it comes back pretty much in the same areas in came off in reverse order. MAYBE the distribution is slightly more even now, but not really notably. On the upside, if you always get a little less fat than last time after every diet, then you can continue to get a little leaner at the end of every fat loss phase.

Greg please help me out, if I’m already creating a deficit of about 500 to 750 cal just from lowering my food intake and then working out on top of that (hiit cardio paired with body weight exercises like squats, push up, lunges etc) , does that mean I need to up my calories? For example, I come to the estimation that I need to eat about 2800 cal a day to be in a major deficit (Losing 2 pounds a week) I already create that deficit by eating only about 2700to 2800 cal a day, however, I do my workouts on top of only consuming 2800 cal which is cutting my calories even more. With that being said, I don’t know if I’m slowing my metabolism, ultimately not allowing me to lose the pounds I want to lose. Since I’m only eating about 2800 cal and then doing intense exercise on top of that eating deficit should I up my calories and if so, by how much? By the way, I’m 360 pounds 6‘8“ tall.

How accurate is the body fat measurement of smart watches such as the Samsung Watch 6 that I got for Christmas? (I guess this method is called "bioelectrical impedance analysis.") So far it has pretty consistent at telling me I am close to 25% whereas by looking at videos like this and looking at myself in the mirror I've been thinking I'm around 20%.

Greg doesn’t understand that the DEXA measures lean mass and NOT muscle mass. So “carbs and water” are in fact lean mass, and the DEXA is measuring it fairly well. Yes, it isn’t perfect, but the argument Greg gave is incorrect. Carbs and water count as lean mass.

I feel like this should be taught in school health class. So many people develop body dismorphia who are in a healthy weight range or just on the cusp of 25%.

In men, what is the highest body fat percentage where when you raise your arms up, 3 ribs (on the side) are visible directly underneath the lat muscles?

Likely mid-high teens, depending how your bodyfat is distributed. I see this around 15% but I store almost exclusively in my abdomen. For people who store more in legs/ass or more evenly overall, you might be able to see this pushing up to 20%.

I am over 30% body fat currently, and have always been able to see the indentations on my right side under my lat. They are still there at over 30% body fat, just saying....

The amount of muscle you have there also impacts the look. When you train the Serratus Anterior (the muscle group residing on the ribs), it can give the illusion of visible ribs, but in reality it’s just loads of muscle. And having developed “rib muscles” seriously improves a physique. It can be visible well into the high teens and possibly low 20’s.

I was wondering about that video with Shaw in it. The strongest man cause it was so wildly crazy sounding but what if he went off? P d's for his diet and actually did lose a significant amount of muscle in comparison to fat. Maybe not 26 pounds, but it seems likely to me.

I'm hard on my self cuz social media makes me think I'm fat but with a pump, pose and down lighting I look pretty shredded. Like in the 10-13 range. But when I have zero pump I feel soft and flat and flabby shit sucks. 205 , 6'1 I'm guessing I'm around 15% but storing a lot more fat in my lower mid section because I've been even leaner before and always had a lower pouch. Arms and legs are always fairly lean.

The problem is body fat measurement is meant to be a self comparison tool to track personal progress, but people focus too much on the %, even in a bodybuilding contest you don’t automatically win if you have the lowest body fat, it just becomes another unhealthy fixation.
