I agree with your sentiment about shutting down comedians, though I would add an exception for when they cross the line to willfully stoke hatred, but I disagree regarding the discussion. I believe that comedy that sparks discussions, as-so-far as the discussions are not calling for shutting down speech, is very valuable, as are the discussions. I don't believe that having unkind words towards a comedian, or a comedy act, is a bad thing.

Paula as per usual taking a moral high ground like she has a mandate to take it? Our family laughed, with Ricky Gervais, talking about disabled kids. My grandson was born with part of his heart missing, and is also autistic, possibly from the trauma of intervention operations. We were all traumatised by those challenges and the daily ones we undergo as a family. My grandson is our Prince, a trouper, and we as a family entitled to laugh at this, borderline or not, if we can't laugh at our circumstances, then we are doomed. Get over being uncomfortable, offended, I love that comedians can be reckless, we need that. Turn it off if you don't like it.

Look…Rickey Gervais was making fun of the situation, not the child. He was kind of making his own character clueless. “Instead of wishing for a message from me or a trip to DisneyLand, why didn’t you, your parents, or the Make A Wish Foundation say anything about getting well?” Because none of these three can actually make a terminally ill child better. That is what went through the mind of every single person that laughed, but when you have to explain a joke, it stops being funny.

See what’s funny about this is that Paula doesn’t realise it’s really her they’re making fun of. Or perhaps she does and isn’t taking it very well. Either way, the point of these jokes is precisely to get people to reflect on the fact that they won’t allow punching down because they see it as a down, essentially, yet simultaneously speak up constantly about how equal they are. Turns out they’re not after all? This is the central confusion at the heart of much of the social justice and equality discussion - the notion that you make all equal by treating them unequally. Sometimes that’s the right thing to do and sometimes it isn’t, but if you don’t understand that choice you deserved to be laughed at.

I watched Armageddon recently. I’m personally an overt snowflake, but the world’s response to Oct 7th has shocked me well away from heading-towards-woke. So I watched Armageddon to test out my personal offence meter. I only felt REally sad about the Michael Jackson jokes…. Unlike a “roast” he can’t reply…. Other jokes were on the edge, but I made a conscious choice to let them go. R.G showed his compassion and humility at the start and end of the show, and I think he is genuine in acknowledging which themes need work. At the end of the day what’s left for me to consider, is how I personally react/engage if someone in a real life conversational setting speaks in these ways…..

I recall a Carlin performance in which he made some jokes about suicide and a handful of patrons left mid-show. I was not personally offended but also didn't find those jokes particularly funny either. Needless to say, those jokes did not feature in his subsequent HBO special. I still think he was one of the best comedians I have seen. Some jokes are going to offend someone as comedians try to skirt that line between what is allowed to be said and what isn't. Sometimes it takes a lot of time and effort to find that right combination to make a joke funny to the largest group possible and sometimes the comic will miss the mark. And if you are going to enjoy most comedy, be prepared to be offended or to hear something offensive. If you are not okay with that there are hundreds of so-called "clean comedians" that will not burst any of your bubbles. Take "crowd work" for example (not my favourite but there are lot of comics who do that). Generally one or more people are being picked on. I am sure some of those people feel hurt and offended but it gets a laugh from the rest of the crowd (if the comic is any good of course). I don't recall ever hearing of a comic getting criticized for that unless the victim is also in some protected demographic.

Acting like Dave Chappelle opened up comedy for black people, forgetting that Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, and Sammie Davis Jr. were doing that 60 years ago.

No she was not even making that point. She's just repeating some obscure political slogan she has heard somewhere. It's just another NPC, there's no brain installed, it's no use trying to make sense of it...

It's all about whose ox is being gored. The left told conservatives for years if they don't like a certain show, change the channel. Don't like that billboard? Don't look at it. Now it's different because the left is offended. Tough darts.

How can anybody with an ounce of critical thinking even use the terms “punching up” and “punching down” in conversation? I reject those terms on their face, because of the implicit hierarchy. And not because I’m objecting to hierarchies per se. The terms imply that there’s a clearly defined hierarchy which every proper thinking person understands… which is of course ridiculous.

I think Chappelle misspoke when he said that his duty was to be reckless. I think what he should have said was that a comedian should be fearless. They should be unafraid to poke the dragons in society and make us think about and laugh at some serious things. I think Rubin got it right when he said that in an hour set, a few jokes are going to fall flat, and that's part of the risk of being up in front of a crowd telling jokes to make people laugh, you can fail and fail often. Paula said that it's the comic's job to be funny, and the thing with being funny is you can't be safe, as the safe things you can say are often just not funny. As for the N-word, I saw a trio of comedians play out a scene in which one (who was black) was trying to collect on a debt from another (who was white). The third stood to the side just to say the N-word for the white comic when addressing the first in what could be considered common street language. It's tough to describe in a funny way, but it was funny and did highlight an issue over language in our society. It can be done, and it can be said that the whole bit was built around the use of a banned word.
