I want to get constructive feedback and grow from it, without getting upset. Is that too much to ask.
Feedback is a crucial element of your professional growth, so it pays to ask for it. Whether from a trusted colleague or manager, high-quality feedback highlights where you shine and where you can improve.
However, sometimes the feedback we get isn’t tough enough. Blanket compliments like “Great job” or “You’re doing fine” aren’t particularly helpful. On the other hand, getting unexpected negative feedback can be painful.
In this episode, Innovation Editor Christine Liu sets out to learn how to ask for and get quality feedback, how to react to feedback (good or bad), and how to grow from it. She turns to Octavia Goredema, career coach and founder of Twenty Ten Agency, for answers on how to manage professional feedback.

    Hey Christine, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for this video. As an entry level employee it can be really hard to know where you're stepping at - and limit yourself to just wondering what others think of you and your work can lead to unwise assumptions that take you nowhere. After watching this I asked for feedback exactly how I should and I know what to do with it. No anxiety. Just doing my best while looking to be better. Thank you so much ❤️

    I love HBR Ascend and these video. Already in my 30s, but still feel like a newbie from time to time... I come from a working class family, so now trying myself in a management role doesn't come very natural to me. I am always under the impression, that peers from academic families knew from the very beginning of their childhood on how to network, be professional and be seen as career driven. So these videos really do help in getting an understanding for many different fields, and that even people working for HBR are humans like me ;) (the brand can feel intimidating at times...)

    Christian, I think for most first-time managers it doesn't feel natural because it's all new. I understand how you can think that others are more networked and know how to be more professional, but all of this can be learned. They learned it (maybe?). You can learn it too. The fact you're in that management position is a testament to the fact your boss believes in you. Carry this with you into your new role as a manager and excel!

    The Christine vs. Work series is my favorite!! One thing I struggle with is speaking up in meetings. I hate interrupting people and I also don't like asking questions if I genuinely have nothing to ask, but I don't want it to seem like I'm not engaged. A video on this topic would be helpful! Thank you!

    Feedback is about self improvement and progress. You should look at receiving feedback as an opportunity to improve, not as a personal attack, which is what most people do.

    I like how you addressed the situation when a person is asking for feedback and all they get is "great job". That's so frustrating! My company has a set of competencies defined for each role and my manager advised me to use those as a reference when asking for feedback. This video has been very insightful, so for next time I'll combine Christine's advice on stating WHY I need the feedback (I want to grow into a more senior role) and also using those competencies as a nudge, so that the person knows which particular competencies I want to get feedback on (communication, organization style etc.) Fingers crossed so I don't get yet another "everything is awesome" :D

    Love this! I especially loved seeing it in action at the end and also the pauses to illustrate the emotion (the blue ‘it takes you twice as long to finish the work’ plus moody music was funny and effective)

    I know its quarantine but it would be nice to see you in a work environment initiating these tips and advice. Even if its just role play. I'm from the UK we are out of quarantine but when I watch your videos. I find the information very useful and try to do them straight away but I do get a sad vibe of how COVID has affected us. Although it is a more realistic approach it would be nice to see you outside and interacting with others so I can retain information in a relaxed way (Im in denial lol),. All in all, I didn't even know others posted videos on this channel. I only watch yours (sorry). You are entertaining and relatable! Thank you! I read the HBR articles but you bring a fresh less professional but friendly vibe to HBR. I actually thought you were the face of it!

    Hi Christine, this is Maggie. I am a huge fan of Christine vs Work, I watch every episode the second you posted it (thanks to the notification bell 😜) Although I learnt a lot from your videos and every topic are so interesting that I keep watching it again and again, I think more point of views in a video might improve the experience. The common practice of your videos is interviewing one expert for a topic, while I am also interested in a different point of view at the same time. Use this video, asking for feedback, as an example, is there another way to ask for comments apart from Octavia's idea? Plus, I think the topic you chose seems a little bit random, I think developing the main topic and consolidate related videos in one playlist or series would be much helpful. For example, use audience type to distinguish the videos. Fresh graduate--how to find a job, how to do well in an interview, how to build a professional network; senior manager--how to build a better team relationship, how to tackle a team crisis, how to motivate people... I hope you will find it useful :)

    Great job Christine! hahaha But seriously, another awesome episode. Very insightful tips from Octavia and nice simulation with Paige. I consider myself as a anxious person most of the time, so expecting feedback or receiving negative feedback is kinda difficult for me (and for everybody I guess). That's why I liked so much about Octavia saying that more important that reflecting on the feedback is making a plan so we can immediately change the other person's mind (even if only a little bit) and also keep ourselves more calm and focused on the plan. I don't know how common is that, but in some places that I worked the person that gave me feedback (usually my manager) also asked for feedback (about them and about the company ), and that's not easy either 😅 So as a suggestion, maybe you could explore that in a future video :) Peace✌️

    Thanks Christine really nice videos!! You keep asking what do we want to hear... I would suggest how to deal and ease your frustration when you have senior members that you report to or have strong doted line and all have same indecisive behavior. Great listeners great alignment but never dare to commit or to move forward. Only make a decision when they are cornered. This works in close aligned teams because the team makes the decision, no need for arbitration, but if the team is siloed and each one cars about their ivory tower, an indecisive leader is just a nightmare because problems drag for months. Thanks again!!!!

    I'm a videographer at a business school and sometimes I feel like I'm the least "professional" one because I don't tend to know all of the business concepts they talk about. I interview faculty and I am always lost. I try to come off competent and intelligent but sometimes it feels like I'm out of place. Could you provide some tips on how to speak more intelligently about a complex topic?

If it is possible, can you touch on subjects like Conflict management (team member or manager) and career advancement e.g how to spot what is missing when want to move-up in your career and you hear , you are almost there.     Feedback is a little difficult to do, because sometimes could be perceive as subjective, but to me something that you could improve is not related to the content, is more about personal image. you have a great channel with good content, I think that if you improve this area will give you more presence and great personal brand.

    Hi Christine, I would love to see a live session on performance reviews - both positive and negatives. A follow-up on the real-life application of giving and receiving professional feedback, Especially when it comes to the negatives to better prepare for worse case scenarios. It helps that these advices you give take into account the perspective of a female. Also If positive feedback= how to take the opportunity to ask for promotion/raise etc.

    Christine, you're great! I would appreciate if you can limit or remove the reflection of the window (light coming from the window) that appears in your glasses and the portrait behind you. I find it distracting ;) Such a nitpicky thing, but it might be useful.

    Make video Little bit deep , short is shallow . Example in this video when guest said focus from where feedback comes from..It is powerful and deep word but short...You should have easy "where feedback " come from... So feedback for you make it longer and deep video.
