You NEED to Visit SYMI 🇬🇷 Greece's Best Small Island.

In this week’s video we visit Symi, Greece! A small, relatively unknown (and beautiful) island which is a part of the Dodecanese islands (not too far from Rhodes).
To start things off we climb 500 steps to the very top of the island for amazing views of almost all of Symi. You can see down the main town but also to the small village on the other side of the hill. There’s a church at the very top. While here we flew the drone for some even better views of Symi.
After making our way back down the town, we walk around and explore. We check out the main port, the sponge stores as well as the historic town clock.
Lastly we head to a beach bar called Petalo where they have beach beds set up along the water, so you can lounge and swim (and also get food and drinks).
ABOUT SYMI
Symi is a Greek island, part of the Dodecanese island group. It’s known for its beaches, an annual music festival and for the harbor at Symi Town, surrounded by colorful neoclassical houses. On the southwest coast, the 18th-century Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis is a major Greek Orthodox pilgrimage site with a Byzantine museum.

Symi is characterized by archaeological services as a preserved settlement (around 1970). 25,000 inhabitants before the Italian occupation. During the Italian occupation many fled to Greece, Egypt, France. So today there are about 2,500 permanent residents.

Let me beat you there, Phillippa. I was there over forty years ago (I'm 72) when I quit my job in London feeling very footloose. Symi was very different to how it is now, always exquisite but so incredibly quiet, so innocent in a way, and uncommercialised. I stayed on the island for three months; it still captures my heart, however much it has changed in the meanwhile.

Loved it guys. Symi also impacted me a lot on my travels in 2014-2015. It just grabs you. Perfect gorgeous place with every angle of it looking like a post-card. I'm also just like you guys, finding out Greece's endless gorgeous islands and places on the mainland, which I know we talked about somewhere in the comments of your Patmos video's. But like symi, I just came back from Syros, Milos, Naxos and Santorini, and aside from Santorini being flatout gorgeous, but also wellknown and touristy but in low season doable, the other 3 islands where very different and much more low-key and traditional, and I can highly recommend all 3 of them. Syros is like Symi a place with gorgeous architectures, but bigger (and unique in it's own way,) as it is the 'capital' of the Cyclades islands. But it's gorgeous though, with pompous architecture. It's a more town like feel, but amazing. We can't just have only villages, and we can't only have just towns or cities. But when you walk in one, you wish it's perfect. And that is what Syros to me feels. Naxos is traditional and the town is also really great and a lot of traditionality. Full with its many Naxian culinary traditions and incredible cheeses. Milos only has a collection of smaller and bigger villages, but the beaches and geology are absolutely special and magical. So. Yes thousands of Greek islands, and I bet all of them are magical, but I can attest to these recent ones from 3 weeks ago on my travels. Highly recommended.

We're so happy you're enjoying the Greek series Elizabeth. The prices are less than home in Canada for clothing. Of course it depends on what you're buying but in general... it's cheaper than our home country or the US - Trevor

maybe that is because Dodecanese islands (Symi is part of them) were captured by the Italians in the Italo-Turkish War (they were Greek but under ottoman occupation) . So they stayed until 1947 after the end of the WW2 when they returned back to Greece . So many buildings were build by Italians

So at the start of the video, when you are at those blue steps, there is a sign pointing to the left saying "Kalistrata" if you follow that It leads you to a wide flight of stairs gently winding up to the village. Looks like you guys ascended almost vertically 😥and came out by the Lemonitisa (the terracotta domed church overlooking the harbour) no wonder you were tired when you go to the top! No matter, im glad you enjoyed Symi. It really is one of the most magical places 👍

@@DelightfulTravellers that's what I meant. You don't go up the blue steps at all. You turn left at the base of them. A lot of people go up them thinking it's the Kalistrata. But the Kalistrata sign at the bottom of them points left, not up. You'll just have to come back and explore again 😁

If you are in Athens you take the Blue Star ferry boats from Port of Piraeus and after some hours (18-20) you arrive to Symi, the last port this boat call, after Symi is Rhodes. You can go straight to Symi and then go to Rhodes to spend the rest of your vacations. 🌞💐

Symi is just a small trip by boat from Rhodos. Boy, are the different as chalk and cheese.!! Rhodos town is Busy Busy with so much traffic that is a complete pain. Much better to try Lindos which is a gem, and it's Acropolis is well worth the visit. Also Kalythia Springs is very pretty and is alongside Lindos the best in Rhodos. However, we would not be returning as tgere are much better islands to explore, especially our all time favourite Crete.

Where there's a will, there's a way (vouloir c' est pouvoir). The bus takes you to chorio and Panormitis. Boats take visitors to the beaches (during the summer). A lot of hotels are located in the yalos area (port) and accessible (no steps). It is better to visit Symi from April - end September. 💐🌞
