You NEED to rotate your tires. HOW & WHY
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
CNET's Brian Cooley does and tells you why he's a fan of this admittedly tedious chore: It makes your tires last a lot longer and perform a little better along the way.

If Brian is in a video. It’s already great
Thank you for being back Cooley on cars!!
Thanks for the explanation, great video
Couple of caveats to this: 1) Across the vehicle is only applicable so long as the tire treads are NOT unidirectional 2) Staggered tires cannot be rotated front to back But most of Master Cooley's wisdom is applicable for most vehicles.

I had unidirectional winter tires, i found this out after I had rotated them on both my cars. So the next weekend I spent another couple of hours undoing the rotated tires :facepalm
The WFH hair. Love it.
I love my mechanic so much. He's such a trustworthy guy and he's always doing things like this for me free of charge just to be nice. Every time I go in to see him for something I get him a $15-$20 gift card to one of the places to eat in town (a different place every time) which I think he really gets a kick out of :)
Keep 'em coming, BC!
But Cooley, my wheels are staggered.

It's not so easy with directional tires since you can't just change wheels from one side to the other without taking the tires off the rims. That being said, it's good to see Brian Cooley again!

Simply rotate back straight to front and front straight to back, but do not cross. That way all tires continue to rotate the same direction.
Omg Cooley get a haircut already 😂😂
Where the hell you've been Brian? Good to see you!
Very good video. Do I balance every year. Have two cars cost $200 every year for summer and winter tires switch. So I purchased jack from Costco now I need power tool to get the bolts. Any suggestions sir?
Thanks
When buying two new tires, Why do shops put the new ones in the back and not in the front?
COOLEY check the balance while rotating
Cooley, if i have a full size spare should i rotate that too?
I have an extreme proof case of this on my cirrus. I don't remember how long ago that I had my tires replaced, but the front are down to the wear bars, while the rear are both still over half life. Of course, I do drive QUITE aggressively.
Some tires also have a rotation arrow on them so they must be rolling in the same direction after you have rotated them. Some owners manuals address that too.
Do we need to do wheel alignment every time we rotated tyres
Cooley (in San Francisco) didn’t mention that it can be done during the regular switch from summer to winter tires ☀️❄️
I always do it, but I do live in a country with winter so it's a bit easier :)
Cooley with Hair? Cool Mr Cooley
Cooley still has his Crown Vic lol
Cooley is back!!?
Can we please have Cooley back as a Car reviewer. CNET on cars was lit

Oh. So, THAT'S what tire rotation means. I just thought they rotate the tire around the axle.
Schools need to have classes that teach the basics of living honestly. "How to tale care of a tire" "Doing taxes" etc.
We need to crowdfund a Covid haircut for Mr. Cooley.
To be fair a 20 year study run bybthe dentist of America have shown that there isn't much need for floasing as in their control and tests thoae who flossed and those who didn't but always brushed twice a day and after most meals, saw similar teeth health and more commonly genetic factors were what caused any issue, issues i.e. bone density etc. But great video
What about directional tyres?
Cooley - Not that it is very common, but adding a car with a staggered setup would have been nice as well. Especially since those with mixed sized tires have different warranty restrictions as well.
Little disappointed he didn't talk about directional tread. Not all wheels can be moved to the other side of the car without unmounting and re-mounting the tires, something not easily done at home. I have 2 sets of wheels, summers and winters. When I change over in the spring and fall I do rotation at that time, but as both sets are directional tread, I only rotate front to back, never side to side.
My Genesis Coupe have different sizes between the front and rear tires. So I only rotate the pairs from left to right every 10k kilometers.n

I go to Costco free tire rotation and balance for the life of the tires that we bought there

Great video, very informative. Scotty Kilmer could learn from it, well, maybe not.😏 Discount Tire rotates tires for free, no purchase required.
Yes! Everytime the car moves.
If the front and rear tires are of different size, then they can only be rotated from left to right.
How you deal with the sensor on the tires because it doesn't tell where the tires are ?
@MANNYTIMEE12
3 жыл бұрын
Usually Toyotas, Honda's, Nissan, Acura and Lexus among other are auto relearn. You just have to drive a few miles so they can relearn however some cars have to be relearned like Ford, Chevy's that needs a scan tool to relearn the sensors. BMW and Mercedes you have to reset the pressure in the computer you can do that with no devices and VW as well however some VW have a reset button in the glovebox. They're all pretty different lol
more cooley
Is that a Covid-related hairdo on Cooley? Barber shops are mostly open now, with restrictions.
The tires under torque stay on the same side, while the free rolling tires get crossed. With a 4X4, that means the rears go straight to the front and the fronts cross to the rear, same as a rear wheel drive vehicle, which is different than the AWD pattern. The major problem comes with DIRECTIONAL tread patterns, which is one reason I never recommended them much at the tire store. In order to rotate tires, you need to dismount and remount and rebalance 2 tires. Unless, of course, it's an AWD vehicle, then you need to dismount & mount, and rebalance all four tires. And we haven't touched on duallies, or working a full size spare into the rotation. Spoiler alert, if you have a dually, swap the rear INSIDE tires to the same side front, and take the front and move them to the rear outer, rear outer to rear inner.
👍👍👍👍👍❤❤
What about tyres that have censors in them, will it bother the computer?

@@owinthomas9678 I will look into if our Costco in Australia does that and how much it costs.
Overall I agree but just to debate with nobody, I've always had very even wear on my many cars and often didn't rotate, and then just needed to buy only two at a time. Now that I can afford it as an old guy I can rotate and buy all four at once. In my long experience, both methods work. Total miles gotten out of a tire will vary this way but so much goes into tire wear that there is no way to test that without two identical cars driven the same days on the same roads in the same way. The main thing I believe is whether a car is driven aggressively or if you baby it to get every mile of life out of the tires.
You didn’t mention directional tyres
I see more and more cars having different size or width tires around the car. ??? Just "rotate" between the common size?
Don't forget about directional tires when rotating
Just do it when you're changing between winter and summer tires. Why didn't he say that?
Nobody does this in Europe never heard of anyone doing this other than on HGVs maybe

@kevinbarry71

@@ellieprice3396 doesn't change anything, my statement stands
Hmm...I agree and disagree...so yes tire rotation can help extend life and even wear but it depends on the car, rims, directional tires, miles driven per year. My meaning is for example I have an 80's Porsche that has the same sized tires all around but the front rims are narrower and at times I had directional tires so I'd literally have to dismount and remount 4 tires at $100 per pop and risk rim damage. I've had rim damage happen to a set of rims that just were refurbished and then taken to costco and they scratched every single rim on the installation machine...Next tires only last about 5 years before they dry rot so if you aren't going to wear the tires out by tread life it's another thing to think about. I think on a "normal car" with non directional tires and the same tires size on all rims go for it :) but if you have directional tires, or a special use case it isn't as clear cut.
Why doesn’t he say how often it should be done?
I rotated my tire once, but afterwards the car steers to the right on it own, so I had to switch them back.
Did not know about that Mom does her rotating tires once because she don't drive very much tires tent the last Almost 5 years
I never rotate. Keep the rears on until they dry rot or don't go past 6 years of age. Learn to read the tire date codes. The rear tread will last a very long time especially on FWD biased vehicle. When the fronts start to get close to the wear bars I replaced them. Having your tires balanced yearly is more useful than rotating.
Aren’t tires directional? So you would need to take them off the rim to rotate them, not just move the whole wheel?
And get the wheels balanced while you have them off the car.
Has Cooley been Drinking again?
Unfortunately, staggered arrangement from the factory dictates that my car simply replaces my tires after sufficient wear.
Didn’t say how often 🙄
I don't because my car came with staggered tires

DONT DO THIS ON A STAGGERED WHEEL WIDTH CARS ! LOL this only works with cars that have square wheels! meaning they all share the same width!
Or I can just swap the front tires and replace them when they wear out! You need to replace front tires only 1once if drive on decent roads in 15years lifetime of a car. So why struggle so much?
Some needs a hair cut
Rotation makes no difference over several years, if you rotate you end up buying all 4 less frequently as they wear evenly, if you don’t rotate you will end up buying 2 but more frequently , over time you end up buying the same amount of tyres.
