You NEED to know this before you GLAZE DIP! potters p.s.a

#glaze #beginner #pottery
this video was more of a PSA for any ceramic artists out there who are either beginning or have been glazing for quite some time but don't quite understand solubility in glazes and how they affect your artwork.
mixing your glazes and making sure that they stay homogeneous is a very important thing four colors and the glass-like substance that goes on your ceramic artwork.

    POTTER TIP: buy a toilet brush and leave it inside your glaze bucket to mix each time before you dip your pottery. The brush is great at getting all the glaze settled at the bottom and sides : )

    Hey Chief dirty potter, our local shop buys long handled toilet brushes from the dollar store and leaves one in each 5 gallon bucket. We stir the "crap" out of the crevices and sides of the bucket. It works really well.

    LINDA WackThe advantage of a whisk or a paint mixer is that none of the components in the glaze will be lost stuck to the brushes. Not all glaze minerals and chemicals are cheap.

    The best way to remix glaze is to tip the whole bucketful through an 80 mesh sieve into another bucket. Get the whole lot, including the hard stuff stuck to the sides of the bucket. Do this a day before you glaze, so that the glaze particles can settle a bit and allow you to adjust the water content by extracting some of the clear water on the top; The glaze MUST be stirred right to the bottom just before you dip, every time you dip.

    Heck yeah mix your dang glaze!Also many people don’t know that glaze can spoil, it takes a long while but it can start to stink if the water starts growing bacteria, and it’s a good idea to sanitize your bucket beforehand and use filtered water. Also invest in a concrete mixer attachment for big buckets, it takes the work out of mixing and is far more uniform in it’s mixing process than a whisk done by hand. Also suspend-aid exists and does help if you’re looking to save some time.

  • @triciac1019

    @triciac1019

    @ahavahyisrael are you wiping off your pots or rinsing them before you glaze them? There is usually dust from firing them. You also need to wash your hands before touching your pots to glaze. You can have natural oils, or dirt on your hands or lotion. Those would keep glaze from sticking.

    If you just add water, there won't be enough particle to water ratio. If you want to dip in a brush on glaze, you just have to pour a bunch of the jars into a big enough container.

    Every day, before we use glazes, we have to put our glazes through a strainer at least twice (cause you need to end up back in the original, labeled bucket no matter what!) If not more. Even if you JUST used the glaze the day before you still have to put it through the strainer. After that we whisk it before dipping.

    you would think that someone would hve come up with a magnetic mixer which would be a thin wand made of magnetic material in the bottom of the bucket and set it on a pedestal with a rotating magnet. they use this kind of mixer in science labs. this way the mixture is continuously re-mixed all while you dip several pieces and don't have to worry.

I’m currently three quarters of the way through the video and heard the same information 4 times already. Glaze isn’t water soluble. Mix it well. Glaze is heavier than water, mix it well. The water separates from the water, mix it well. Mix it for long enough. The glaze separates when left sitting for a while. Mix it really well. 😒
