I think while well intentioned, the quote misses the mark a little. Shade in queer culture is insulting someone, often in a subtle or backhanded manner and sometimes even in jest. Comparing bigotry of anti-LGBT groups and their homophobic signs or actions (like support for conversion camps) to "shade" somewhat trivializes the seriousness and real life consequences

I'm super late to the party because I just found this song thanks to a clip of Taylor's speech about it at the MTV Music Awards tonight, but I love this song. Admittedly, I haven't listened to her regularly since her "You Belong with Me" and "Love Story" days, but if her future work continues to be amazing statements in catchy songs like this, I'll definitely start paying closer attention again.
