You NEED this sound! | Danelectro Baritone

The Dan Electro Baritone has been on my wishlist for decades. I finally bought one in a moment of weakness on Facebook marketplace. Not only does it have a cool sound, it fills a void that us producers and media composers need to fill.

If you all haven't heard it yet, Mark Lettieri has two albums where he uses a baritone for funk. They are Deep: The Baritone Sessions and they are so great. This guitar has so much potential and I really hope to see more people using it for different genres.

great point at 5:52 "the minimal mixes that we do are the most used." I've written some big sweeping tracks with 150+ track count in my day, but whenever I've had the fortune of having one of my songs featured in a movie trailer, more often than not it's been a minimalist / simple part of the song that they've featured. good reminder to oneself

I had a friend recently point out that these guitars have 500k pots (which are for humbuckers generally). I changed mine out with 250k and tamed the high unusable high end from this guitar.

It is NOT a one-trick pony! I own a '90s Danelectro U2 Baritone (bottle headstock) that I bought from a bassist pal of mine. While working on my Fender Jazz bass over a bottle of wine in his repair shop he offered me it for only $200 in the '90s. What a pal! He had it strung with light bass strings and tuned E to E one-fifth down from a Baritone tuning. It is essentially a 6-string bass, tuned like a guitar, one whole octave down. While performing in a guitar trio, I can comp chords an octave up while the guitarist solos. It made a tone on a solo through my Galien-Krueger MBS150S head (Alesis Wedge Chorus/Delay) into my Aguilar GS112 that made the bass player in my Quartet's eyes pop out of his head. He was stunned by how hip it sounded. I want to buy another one so that I can actually run it like a proper Baritone to record with. The unique build with those lipstick pickups sounds insanely cool. I love the wood bridge on my unit too. My Bass (Baritone) U2 is piano black with white trim and I get countless compliments on its appearance.

Don't fear the truss rod, as long as you go steadily. I've always fancied a Dan Electro 12 string as I find Ricky necks too small, and now I want a Baritone too :)

I love my Dano Bari. Well, I did, until my son borrowed it. Haven't seen it since. To replace it I got the Fender Telecaster Baritone. The neck pickup has that nice lipstick P-up tone, but the bridge has a humbucker which is much less buzzy for high gain metal like tracks. Great demo and video as usual Jon.

also, NOT a one-trick pony... so many things to do with Bari, one of my favorite studio tools... easy application that works so often is using a Bari to double the bassline, sometimes worth aligning the transients, sometimes better with a bit of rub/blur

It's best to make truss rod adjustments with the strings on and up to tension if possible. Otherwise you could think it looks good with the strings off, only for it to look less good with the strings back on.

I play baritones exclusively. Normal guitars don't feel right to me anymore. They are flimsy and have no tonal authority. But when I strum a chord on one of my baritones. Oh boy! These beasts don't even need tons of distortion in order to sound big and heavy.

I have the Dano Baritone innuendo. Made in Korea it has single coils. The weird onboard effects need to boosted however it does have stereo out. I can't get the action low past the 9 the fret but that's not baritone area anyway. I almost always have the onboard tremelo on and tune it to A to A. Lots of fun to get different sounds. I recommend those Dan innuendos and blasters as they are a great bargain whether Bari or not.

ATM I drop my tele down 2 steps with gauge 11s, and it get's close to that bariton sound, but just not the same. Anyway, this has wet the whistle, thanks Jon! [and YES to the Kontakt player drums!]
