I have been collecting U.S. coins for over 40 years now and I want to confirm to everyone that watches this video that you are exactly right about having books. I got my 1st official Red book published by Whitman 10 years ago and learned that I didn't know hardly anything about coins! I have more knowledge and desirable coins obtained in the last 10 years because of this book then I have had for the other 30 years before. Basically for my first 30 years I let many good coins slip through my hands because I knew nothing about what I thought I was doing. I strongly recommend what you have said in this video, you couldn't be. more right and honest! Thanks for your information and keep the videos coming.
I consider myself to be a fairly smart man. I have a College Degree and work in Finance. One thing that I LOVE about the coin world is the fact that I learn something darn- near every-single-day!! I've read several coin books, research coins all-the-time, watch endless KZread vids, and I still learn something new constantly!! I've also learned that "not knowing" can cost you major money (don't even get me started on that...😁)! You do a GREAT job of explaining things on a wide variety of topics!!!
When I started collecting in 1965 the advice was always to buy the book before you bought the coin. It's still true even with all the information you can find on the internet. Books are by authors that the publisher has confidence in. Online you can find all manor of nonsense and noise.
Good video Daniel! I have a library myself, and use it often. 👍
I bought one of these books from you yesterday. Have a great day!
Good Afternoon Daniel!🥤 Thankyou for your good instruction! I really enjoy my Mega Redbooks, especially the special articles inside!!
Yes sir Numismatic study good book's and thankful to good information
Bought all 3 recommendations. Absolutely love them. Thank you!
Good morning from Arizona Sir Daniel! Great information as always. Have a great day!
Thank you for all your help. I am glad you had Amazon links on your website, a small way for me to help you back. 😀
Good afternoon Daniel, another great video.always shearing great information about all kind of coins ,the conns and pros, of coins collection.again Daniel thank you so much, god bless you.
Excellent advice. I would add buying a 10x loop magnifier. Buy a good one not one from the $ store. You will be able to see more detail than with lower powered ones. For both beginning and more advanced collectors, this youtube channel,is very helpful and important. I have learned things in here, and I am, an advanced collector with 60+ years of being both a collector and one time dealer.
Thank you…great information and I still love having physical books to flip thru…put them in my Amazon shopping cart already…
I know very little about US coins. I appreciate your recommendations. I will pick a copy of these to study. Thank you.
I have them and such big help!! My strike it rich I got from Potter signed. LoL. Thanks
I'm ordering all 3....thanks for the info!!!!
That's a great information for coin collectors helped me out quite a bit great video have a great day.
Excellent advice Daniel ! These reference guides are worth it !
I'm a mechanical engineer by trade but one thing I've found that applies to any profession is it's more important to know where to go to find correct information than having it memorized. I don't need to remember off the top of my head where exactly a pressure vessel crosses from thin wall into thick wall territory. What I need to 100% know is that there is a difference and where to look up what my particular application is and how to treat it. The same thought process can be applied to coins. Sure, you may be an expert in silver Washingtons but be completely out of your skill set with early coppers. So long as you know where to find the information you don't have to be "the expert" in everything...because chances are someone else already is and wrote the book.

Most coin dealers fall into this description.
Great info and visual explanation thank you Daniel 👍👍
Here is the difference. A smart person knows how to find the information (and those books are the bomb). The others think they know it all and don't need any help. I know what I don't know and know that I need to look it up.
THANK YOU, Daniel!!!
Can't wait to be able to get these books, as always thank you for the valuable information
You are one of the best !!
Great info and visual explanation! Thank you very much!
Wonderful books!
Great video with advice to match! I bought a 25th edition red book (1972) for nostalgia purpose. I heard they were coming out with a newer cherry pickers guide, have you heard anything on that?
Outstanding Daniel! Again, common sense information that we should have. Thank you!
Good info thanks
Thanks Daniel! Great tips!
Thanks for more excellent information
Thanks for the advice Dan.
Thank you for the information about coins
Awesome video. Thank you!
Just got my first red book in the mail yesterday
Great video and thanks for sharing. ❤️
Thank you very much!!!!
Great video Daniel! I do not have a Mega Red book, rather being a little more basic, I own the Official Red Book 2023 Full-Color Pages, Untited States Coins Large Print Edition. I also own an older Official Blue Book, smaller picture, not color hard bound edition. Good ideas to purchase these books!
ALWAYS. THE BEST... 🐐 🐐 🐐 THANK YOU
The Red Book is great for retail purchase prices. I also like the Blue Book for prices selling coins to dealers and a more, I guess, average price guide so you don't get too "greedy" in selling. As Ted said, a 10x quality magnifier really helps too. Thanks for the video.

What’s the main difference between the blue and red book? I’ve always bought a red book every year but never a blue
@TruthLivesNow

@@romeowhiskeylima556 I don't have the Mega Red Book, rather the 464 pg. Large Print Official Red Book by Whitman. The Red Book is the Retail Value for Coins. An Official Blue Book is important, it represent the actual cash value a Dealer will pay you for your coins. As Fossil said, a 7x or 10x magnifying glass is a must. One can use the Red Book and Blue Book together to negotiates a price for a coin.

@@romeowhiskeylima556 The Blue Book is closer to what coin dealers pay for coins. It is still a bit on the high side for most common coins, but is a more reasonable average. I usually figure 70 to 80 percent of the Blue Book value is what a coin shop will pay for common coins so they have some margin for resale. Red Book is more of a retail price collectors pay for coins and Mint sets. Rarer coins would be closer to Blue Book printed price, or maybe closer to Red Book when selling. Just a matter of how attached you are to a coin and what you think you can get for it in the open market as opposed to selling to a shop. Good luck in your collecting.
I own the "PCGS Coin Grading and Countifict Decetion" book and last year's small version of "The Red Book". Should I upgrade or am I OK with the books I have. I had a book on error detection but I am not big into searching through my coins for errors. I am presently trying to find what a type B quarter is and can't find if it I both circulated and proofs that fall into this category. Thank for another in a long line of informative videos. I hope your Dad is well and thank him for his input into the Portmouth coin shop history.
Thanks Daniel, I just placed my order! 😉👍🏽

I have error 7 or error 1 on my pennycould be 1914....1974
Daniel, I have an uncirculated 1974 Isenhower dollar in its case. How much is it worth?
Sad and bad that I’ve decided to collect coins (25years) because of the post office inefficiency and dishonesty of an individual. Post office mis delivered an 1878 p Morgan PCGS ms63 DMPL. The carrier tried to retrieve it but the guy denied he ever received it even though he signed for. Obviously he have sold it for sure. Filing claims is bothersome, unnecessary if most people were honest. Only one or a few can make great damage.
I’ve been trying to find a Cherry pickers guide but they are so expensive and sell out instantly and almost never find used.

@@CoinHELPu I totally agree. I’d just like to have one to have it. Honestly I don’t need any of them when the info is online free and easy to find quickly. This is why I don’t have the others you showed in this video.

I've been out of work for 3 years due to the stupid Pandemic that took millions of lives and I for one can't afford to buy any books on collecting coins. It would be totally beyond my means. As inflation continues the prices have gone up so much for everything that I can't afford to register my car or even get insurance for it. So what does it take to get these books at a affordable price???? Money doesn't grow on trees and I just can't possibly afford them.

You can go to flea markets and used book stores and pretty easily find an official red book for U.S. coins cheap! I paid $5 for one that wasn't used at all but was 3 years old, you only need a brand new book for new year coins because books about coins of the past have the same information except for the prices which fluctuate from time to time but you can still tell what coins demand a higher price over others. Example, a 1990 penny had so many struck at each mint and that number is not going to change regardless what year book you have! You can also find some of these books at your local public libraries to see and use until your able to purchase one of your own and find a discounted price.

Four things: 1) If you can't afford the books you can't afford the coins. 2) You can learn a lot by checking what is available at your local public library. 3) Look for a local coin club. You might be able to start by buying a two or three old used copy from another collector. 4) A coin show is often a good place to look for bargains on books (and other supplies).
