    @@lilo4399 , many, many, many people have been saved from suicide because somebody cared, and never tried again. Many potential bridge jumpers gave up their plan because of a bridge watcher who spoke with them with compassion. It is NOT their destiny or their fate, it is a choice, and a choice that can be and IS changed by kind human interaction, and connecting with another human with kindness and compassion is not a God complex, it is simply being human, at its best.BTW, most survivors of suicide by jumping say that the second they let go, they regretted their decision, and wished they had not done it.

    @@lilo4399 I understand where you're coming from but your conclusion is just something else entirely. People aren't as evil as they seem. A lot of us have some sort of instinct to selflessly help others. It's just something we have within us. We have the ability to be compassionate and kind to each other and help each other out in times of need. There is no god complex going around in these cases. We just want to help. I understand that our death is inevitable and it will come but in this such situation? Come on, his son has contemplated it for a long time now. If he were to at least open up to someone and spill whatever darkness is pushing him then at least something could've been done. It's a sad story because there were so many possibilities where help could've been sent. If it was a freak accident then this would be a different situation. It would still be sad but there's nothing that could've been done. It's not egotistical to help others. I absolutely hate that mindset. Okay I will admit that narcissists exist and some of them do thrive in support communities but that doesn't mean that everyone is the same. Three months of working on it and hiding it, and swallowing so many sleeping pills hours before the decapitation to ensure the job is done. The only thing that I keep getting caught up on is the willingness to leave such a gruesome scene for his father to find. Not many people can say they have parents that care, but Boyd did. His dad seemed devoted to his son and it breaks my heart knowing that he’s probably going over everything still to this day wondering if he could have stepped in sooner and helped. One things for sure, Boyd did pass some of his suffering on to his father. That’s one of the few reasons I stay on this earth, for as much pain and trauma as I’m holding I’m only going to be passing it on to friends, family, and whoever finds me. I never want my suffering to end at the cost of everyone else around me suffering as well (obviously exclusionary of terminal illnesses).

That, or was afraid of the dying process, so he found a way to not afraid be aware at the time of death. though if that's the case, then he could've just overdosed on sleeping pills with alcohol and prevent himself from being aware att of death that way, so so unless he wasn't aware of that option - which he most likely was if he researched enough to create this mechanism - then the first option seems more plausible,

I should know I was young once. Just think about it for one second just one second! His son was making all kinds of noise and acting a bit out of character for well over a month. Just imagine if the father would have been like "Oh hell no! and busted down the door or waited to the son went out somewhere and made his way into his room and saw what it was that he was building? Do you think he may have at the very least have a conversation with him about the item he was building? Bottom line if dad would have did what I just stated maybe not 100% but maybe his son would be alive today. We cannot allow our children to do as they please without checking up on what their up to every once in a while. Its NOR violating their privacy! We as their parents have an obligation to make sure our children are not getting into shit that isn't good for them. @James Peterson what in the hell are you talking about? He just thought if his son socialized some it would help him out. There's nothing wrong with that. Boyd was in depression and most often that's caused by seclusion. I should know because as a teenager I didn't go out much and it messed with my head and gave me suicidal thoughts daily. If you don't like to socialize with people or you're not extroverted or whatever, that's fine, but don't blame your parents or family for wanting better. That's just throwing the blame at someone else for your own misery. Once you're 18 go and live by yourself if that's what you truly want, but don't blame anyone for the pain you go through.

At least his dad cared about him. Which is why he left him to his project and gave him all that time off work, even though it'd be hard on him. He WAS letting him be himself. And that's why Boyd died. Because no one knew just how depressed he was and that he needed intervention and help from professionals. I understand being introverted, but this was too much of an extreme and clearly out of character

    I'd argue that the father was not as supportive as it sounds. I think a supportive and dedicated father would fight past his own tendency to be agreeable and would have gone in to see what his son was doing, despite the son's wishes. As a parent, we have to sometime do things that may upset our children for their own good. Despite this man's son being an adult, he was still living at home, and exhibiting behavior his father deemed to be out of the ordinary.

But seriously, my parents have always said that it is a good thing to be a well informed parent, and that kids (especially ones living under their roof) don't exactly have the right to *utter* privacy. We had a decent amount of privacy, and my parents taught us to respect it, but my parents always seemed to know what was going on in our lives and had eyes and ears all over town to keep us out of trouble. I think parents have to sometimes fight against their own desires to avoid conflict to ensure their kids are healthy and doing well. And sometimes you have to be uncomfortable to make sure your adult children can get the help they need to happy and healthy.

  • @sufficientsostrive

    @sufficientsostrive

    @Xero that may very well be but the exact same can be said about anyone in this world, whatever their religion or lifestyle may be. What I’m saying is that your original comment about religion has nothing to do with what I said under this comment. That’s the problem and where we fail, what the Bible talks about is not a religion but a relationship, thats why so many people become obsessed or fail, or take advantage of others through it. As for me speaking about the Bible, I will continue to speak on it for the rest of my life because as I have seen - when the Bible is understood (not just known, as in head knowledge but truly understood) - there has come much transformation in people’s lives and I have seen it in my life too. When I was depressed and spiritually afflicted and tormented, His word is the only thing that brought me through, I did not get brainwashed or taken advantage of because I did what I told the original poster of this comment to do, I gave my life to Him, not to a pastor/person. If you study the Bible for yourself, you’ll soon see it was never about religion.

    I'm truly sorry you're struggling with this monster we call depression, I'm in the same boat. Sometimes it can feel like even though you're in a room FULL of people you're entirely alone, an alien confused at how others seem to plod along and be happy with the most minimal of effort. While I know I can't really help in any definitive way I might suggest, from one lonely soul to another, trying to find a discord or hobby specific group to join(hell even just visiting a coffee shop or lounge can work sometimes). Even if it's just for an hour it's a nice small way to get even a little bit of social interaction (small tip if you're an artist or like to draw there's a lot more clubs about and acts as a really good icebreaker if people see you sketching, because people natturally wnat to see what you've drawn). Regardless I hope your situation improves and your depression lessens even just a little bit, know you're never alone and that people care. Even if it's just a random on the internet, your comment matters, you matter, and I appreciate seing it :)

    Depression is a darkness, a disease where your own mind targets yourself as an enemy. The reason it's so hard to overcome is because who else knows exactly what to do or say to get under your own skin other than yourself? It takes a lot of energy and will power to overcome it. I hope those that are going through that battle find the strength to win. My heart goes out to this Father.

    This goes far beyond suicide and depression, there was a very deep seated mental illness there as well, to go to such lengths says something else entirely. Not to mention the fact that he knew how his elaborate contraption was going to affect his father for the long term…how sad and tragic.

    When one is at that point in being suicidal, your brain usually has you 100% convinced that everyone around you will be better off after your death, so I highly doubt that played into the mental equation in any significant way. If anything the only reason he was being so secretive is because he knew he would be stopped if anyone knew what he was making.

    The way MrBallen keeps some details hidden to deliver that massive bomb at the end is such good storytelling. Even if most people have probably already put together what was going on, it's still effective, because you're just waiting for the reveal with a sense of impending doom. So you're just sitting there going "Oh no, it's a guillotine, isn't it? It's a guillotine. Oh no, no, no." And when he reveals it you just go "Nooooooooo. That's so messed up."

    its actually shocking the amount of people around us in our day to day lives who are silently suffering thru depression. or even who have reached out for help many times. but its just such a long term problem even friends and family grow weary of dealing with it. many many people you know are silently suffering and considering suicide. so if your reading this then consider that. and be a light in there lives. be loving and be a reason on the plus side for them to stay. the most common thing among depressed people is feelings of being all alone.
