I love how every Bond theme eventually is a reoccurring soundttack of the movie. And this song has that decadent 60's tone. It's so cool when Bond drives on Cuba or wherever the fk he is and you hear this vibe in the background. Proper UK psychopath spy shit. Love that.

How on earth this song did not make it to the Oscars and won it back in 2005/2006? Much much better James Bond opening song than Adele's Skyfall and Sam Smith's Writing on the Wall yet both have won. Unbelievable and inexplicable.

Agree with the comments. After Goldeneye this tune captures the new Bond persona at the time all in one package (gritty, charming, intelligent wreckless and dangerous, fit as hell and ruthless if crossed).

Yeah funny you should say that because that was my thought. This one and Goldeneye has some kind of profound Bond decadence that feels like it has everything that Bond is about. I don't understand how they recruit for the opening theme. They have all the money in the world but I think it is fitting that the best themes are by a man on the slide (Chris) and a woman at the ropes if her career and almost forgotten (Tina). They captured the Bond soul better than Madonna, Adela and all those people. Sometimes quality is more about good judgement than simply open the wallet and get the most expensive act.

Casino Royale is Daniel Craig succeeding the title of James Bond. The song is saying that the other Bonds are 'nothing so divine', and each previous Bond had merely been 'next in line.' It also asks the question of Craig, 'Are you willing to die?' Quantum of Solace is Bond coming to terms with the idea of death. Because every little thing could just be another way to die. Skyfall is where Bond reconciles his role in the 21st Century, when the sky of the past falls, he will still stand tall.

Just so we're clear, it's actually supposed to be M talking to him, telling him that he's expendable, which we get to see in action in Skyfall. If you pay closer attention to the lyrics, you'll know which parts are her addressing him. Part of it is James talking to someone else, who's set themselves in opposition to his goals. This, also, is pretty obvious. The rest is just the general notion of being a clandestine operative, and the realities of the "prize" one gets, for successfully carrying out such an operation, and the inevitability of another person taking the last one's place, creating yet another, potential global disaster. It's important to understand what kind of song-writer Chris Cornell is, also, when attempting to discern what is intended by the lyrics. An example of M's address to Bond: "I've seen angels fall from blinding heights, but you, yourself, are nothing so divine.... just next in line. Arm yourself, because no one else here will save you. The odds will betray you, and I will replace you. Can't deny that the prize, it may never fulfill you. It longs to kill you. Are you willing to die?" Then the notion of Bond's poise follows: "The coldest blood runs through my veins.... you know my name." Like I said, if you're going to throw out what a "song is saying," it would be important if you understood the song-writer and source material a little better. You were absolutely dead wrong with your synopsis. I'm not trying to bash you, I'm just saying, if I were that far off, I would want someone to correct me, so that I knew the correct answer, in the future.

Hansel Wong The relevance to "luck" "hands" "diamonds" "life ending with a spin of the wheel" in relation to casinos, gambling, and the inevitable fall from grace of the losing party are not lost on me. Many interwoven meanings.

Best James Bond song ever was and still is - FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. The above mentioned song would not even be in my top 10 - if even on the list at all.

Love License to Kill one of the best Bond films ever. Dalton was greatly underrated, IMO. He played a Bond who WOULD kill you if you messed with his friends. Very true to the original Bond that Fleming wrote about, IMO.

Are you joking. Skyfall song is horseshit and gives no justice to that otherwise brilliant bond movie. This song has an action nerve and a power bringing the restart of Bond to perfection.
