And so many.. soo many people don't get it, they simply don't understand it. And especially the hundreds that say they really liked and loved the original, but hate 2049. Then i have no clue what they are talking about at all, they must have not understood the original either, they just love it for some weird reason.

I know I'm late saying this but to me personally 2049 is a masterpiece. Visually I find it to be a modern Space Odyssey . As a fan of the original this movie is everything I wanted a sequel could be in a long time. Furthermore the fact that this movie failed at the box office just makes me upset, especially that this movie did not earn more love, recognition, and appreciation. Many hardcore fans and people I've talked to say "it's boring" or "shit compared to the original" I don't know what more to say. Denis and everyone involved did an amazing job crafting this film and by making it a humble sequel to it's brilliant predecessor what did people want then? More action, a remake, soft reboot, a better movie than the first?!? I get it's not a movie for everyone and it does have flaws but some saying it's a terrible movie just because it's boring or slow just makes me curious about how moviegoers have lost such view of true cinematic art.

For me personally, this is a film that has impacted not only my ideas and perspective on films the most, but also that has given me the most "satisfaction" with every rewatch. I not only find something interesting and appreciate finer nuances with every rewatch, I stand awestruck with how deep , pensive and thoughtful it is while giving a simple message of "good" in a dystopian world. Any who calls this film "shit" or fails to acknowledge its greatness for what it really is worth, simply did not watch the film with the right perspective or simply lacks brainpower and emotional connect to the basic idea of the plot.

There was one thing in Sicario i didn't fully understand. Did Kate's superior know what he sent her into?. In that case why on earth didn't he warn her? Was FBI kept in the dark completely? In that case, why didn't Kate contact her superior's after it was revealed what she was really there for?. IMO it seems like her superior must have known, and that what she was sent to do things that violates so many rules and regulations. That's really fucked up. And even if the superior knew it before hand, really weird that Kate didn't contact him or tried to tell him what was going on. I just had problems getting my head around this one, because Kate knows the code, and she knew she was working in a grey area.

Renato Bakanovas. I agree. But yes when i see a movie i look for every characters reasons, i must be at least explainable to some degree. And sicario is an awesome movie, no doubt about that, i really really love it. The border scene for example is one of the most tense thriller moments in the last 10 years in my opinion. And for a story to have a full drive, it needs to be planted solid. Denis is truly a master of cinema, but he can also have some lose ends, they are not that bad, but they are there. So it all comes down to how you see the plot and the story, and how important those lose ends are to the over all product. And in this case, with sicario, i just found this one details troublesome, but not at all a big deal, sicario is still a seriously awesome film.

To obtain such distinction as a director, I wonder how many times they have to disagree with or influence crew to get their intention across. Thats thats hardest part of directing - not making the crew hate you while filming for dismissing some of their input.

Ironically, despite Villeneuve's style being understated and minimalistic, I find his films to be some of the hardest-hitting. I came out of Dune trying to catch my breath. I was practically sobbing at the end of Arrival. Prisoners filled me with existential dread about the cruelty of humanity. His work is always like a sucker-punch.

Villenueve is a master film maker, and people are trying to place him in a box, where they can understand, instead of embracing the differences of something or someone that is fresh. Hopefully, Villenueve will continue to evolve as a film maker where critics will avoid criticizing his films and just watch them. The Shining, 2001, and Barry Lyndon, make you appreciate real art, and today more movies avoid art so often people have forgotten the genre of art in film. Villenueve will become a Michael Mann, Coppola, Michael Chimino, Brian De Palma, Scorsese, Kubrick, or Ridley Scott. Even these film makes do not win best Director Oscars today. Critics today do not know art or good film making, they appreciate self aggrandizing, profane, mindless schlock.

Call me crazy, but Denis Villeneuve is this generation's Stanley Kubrick. He turns films into works of art, and Blade Runner 2049 is a prime example of that. He is definitely one of the best directors of all time, if not THE best!

Aren't some of these points related to the writing & not the directing? For example a female protagonist in a new environment who feels displaced, isn't that because of the writing & not the directing? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

He chooses the script, helps to write it and passes through his visual prism a interpretation of his own through images. It's direction. The direction touches every point of creation.
