The common problem for others is also the location many people here in the Philippines has the drive and passion but the companies here is just super high standards even a Help Desk job here in the PH is not an entry level job it says Entry Level but need 3-5yrs of experience to get in. Also most HR wont even give you a chance to talk to hear our hunger and the love for tech they just swipe right, Sad reality here...

"Sometimes the failure is what teaches us the most lessons" Loved this right now. I've worked 5 years right now at my job and was denied a promotion to Applications Engineer because my firm did what was "best for the firm" and hired someone else outside the company. They felt I wouldn't learn the job in less than 2 years. I've been locked in and more motivated than ever these past two and half months. Passed my Core 1 and Core 2 A+ exams in 2 months and working already on my Network+. Scheduled for another month a half. Then on to Security+. On schedule to have my trifecta in 6 months from being denied. 6 months after that hope to have my PenTest+ along with others. I've been studying non-stop before, during lunch, and after work included all day Saturday and Sundays. This line really hit home when I heard it. Determined to show everybody what I'm really capable of.

I retired from a 30 year career the exact same way. Kudos for sharing.

I understand the daily reading requirements. But comprehending what you're reading is more important than covering x number of pages. And that's where I run into trouble. I can read, re-read, and re-re-read and still not have comprehended it. I learn by lectures & labs. I guess you have to go with what works for you. Thanks for posting David, & Stefan. This was (as usual) a great episode.

Very true & totally agree with you. As to encourage all LifeLongLearners who might happen to read this, would like to share my learning experience. We can improve in our learning by practising on our weaker part so as to increase our speed in learning new stuff. For example, attend a class first or go thru David's youtube video first, do the Labs & then go back to the books to see how they explain the same concepts. Then create your own notes and teach someone else. It will take away much more time when I first did this but in the long run, I pick up new technologies and skills much faster than my average peers. Just my 2cents back. HTH somebody😊

What an inspiration Stefan is and David of course for posting the content that he does. Can relate to being made to feel completely and utterly inadequate and small by someone of whom is supposed (emphasis on the word 'supposed') to be encouraging people they're leading to be as successful as they possibly can instead of using words such as 'never been a success' etc in appraisals. Personally believe that everyone has something positive to bring to the table so to speak and that focusing on an individuals failings is unhelpful and damaging. Fascinated in this field however in the position that David quite often refers to this being it's not only youngsters that are wanting to get their foot through the door and into this rapidly moving and interesting career path.

Ive finished my prereq's for Nursing, I have been on the waiting list for years to get into The CA. State College Nursing Program. I was called into program although you have to be Covid vaxxed. I've also gone through program to become a Surgical Asst. Im done! In the State of CA. They want you vaxxed(covid vaxx). Im done! I thank you so much for your info. Im on a journey search and I will open these new doors of this new World, AI, Data Science. Im 53 yrs old but age is a number, Im excited for new adventures & I love to be challenged! @@pokufan55 Well in my country, there is a vocational training course (Diploma of Vocational Training) that's what I took for about nine months, then I had to continue on my own from there by taking up real projects to do personally & via freelancing. My experience came about because of these projects I engaged into ensuring I use the best coding practices known in the market. Through this, I was able to pass Turing's exams (PHP/Laravel, Python/Django). Just lookout for a niche, checkout for the best tutors online, keep working...

Hey, David Bombal! Can you bring a guest expert in digital forensics? It would be helpful for me and anyone who wants to start in digital forensics.

What makes me envy this guy is how he was able to work in the field before hand, I wish I could gain hands on experience while I’m schooling and getting certs….I’m a hands on person and know for a fact I’d understand a lot of things better than reading about it constantly. I wish more jobs were out there that hired people while they are getting educated or even trained them along the way. Being stuck working as a manager in a retail store while balancing full time college can be rough on the brain at times, but I manage even though I feel I could be learning and doing more.

5:58 I've heard of them. despite having been on and run BBS's since the 80s you do have to be lucky and have someone give you a chance like that. I know people that didn't get that kind of a chance, bit of a bummer for them. I got my break like that because of a regional bank in my area that ran Novell 3 & 4. Certs never hurt as long as you are able to teach someone what you've learned, I think. 11:30 absolutely this! The more you know, the more you realize you don't know! 50:28-do both!

15 years ago I used to be stuck in the same rut a lot of young IT professionals seem to be getting stuck in. The old “XYZ entry level IT job wants X# years of experience, but to get that experience I need XYZ entry level IT job.” Or having to think I needed all those fancy certifications and schooling before obtaining that entry level IT job. With the amount of free information out there (even 20 plus years ago) there was no reason at the time not to be able to get that experience on my own without a job in the field. A tip for all those writing resumes in the tech field. You can absolutely use your years of “tinkering” and “personal project” as experience. Looks really good when you take initiative to learn on your own.

Just a note, college does have it benefits: a) most of applications are automated which discards automatically non-graduates b) college is for networking: people hire people c) ROI is not only expressed in money but college is a time for you to grow in other ways

Was about to say this, props for elaborating. College makes you network with people and your other skills. Remember you are not only hired bec of your hard skill, you soft skills is a deal breaker. No one wants to work with just skilled personnel thats hard to communicate with.

The labs are behind a paywall, I am just doing the JNCIA-Junos cert. Self teaching is a hard skill in of itself and you have to be disciplined in order to do it and do it well.

Big fan of Juniper SRX's just wish Juniper was a bit more open and friendly to obtaining the code upgrades for home labbers. Which is not common at all for any of the networking companies. I always found it interesting how networking companies are always asking for more engineers to come into the fold without ever providing the on hands tools to allow those of us to deep dive things. There is the security side of things that I do understand, however these newer technologies are really things that you need to be able to get your hands on to fully wrap your head around them. I wound up purchasing an SRX-300 a while back then the internal eUSB died on it. and I was left trying to find code to bring it back from the dead on a new eUSB and it was a constant fight with juiper support until I purchased a support contract through CDW.

Lol I ran a board with a very active HPA section back in the day too for a quite a few years until broadband became a thing.. ahh those were the days of the 2600 htz tone that opened the whole world up to people, even if it wasnt legal to do so

it's good be a ccnx or jncx, but, the real thing happen in the field ....you need to got good concepts to work but it's not neccesary be a CCIE or JNCIE to be a great engineering or great problem resolver :)

I’m autistic; imposter syndrome is the story of my life. I’m a burnt out, 31 year old, auto mechanic, who’s a single dad with primary custody. Training myself is going to be very difficult, but my autism gave me a 127 IQ and the ability to hyper focus on something I’m in to. I’m hoping to land my first IT (hopefully pentester) job, by 2025.

I'm on a path of becoming a self-taught system administrator. If anyone who's reading this can recommend me resources, courses, books and bootcams for becoming a sysadmin which are not a waste of time and money I would really appreciate it.

If you have limited Linux experience, I'd recommend OTW's Linux for Hackers book as a starting point. Having a base of knowledge of how to use Linux from a low level is a big advantage to more advanced sysadmins, because when the more advanced things break, you're not baffled as to how to start troubleshooting. If you want to get into commercial Linux administration these days, you need to know products like Ansible and/or Chef, because most Linux admins are not limited to manually adminning a couple systems anymore. Many admins are responsible for dozens or hundreds (or more) systems, and you'll need to use automation and infrastructure as code systems to be able to do it efficiently and effectively.

I have hired boot camp graduates and they are severely lacking in real world skills. One guy was so afraid to even touch a keyboard so I took a few older computers and networked them so he could practice and he wouldn’t even try that even though the network was not connected to our internal network. With all the virtualizers you can (and must) get hands on experience in break/fix .

That is really a good point. The estimated job loss in the computer industry is expected to be something like 300,000,000 jobs. The survey wa done by one of the largest financial firms in the world. I would bet that figure is on the conservative side.
