You don't have to win the title to go up a category, if you perform decently enough you can move up. Generally if you are with an academy they can sort out a way for you to race in higher categories. Alternatively if you have a lot of money in pocket, you can pay your way up until F2. After that, you can still get into F1 via virtue of of money but you still have to be some level of good. Even though the two Canadians in F1 Nicholas Latifi and Lance Stroll were mainly bought in due to their money, they still had the performances in F2 and F3 to impress. The deal though is if you are talented enough, teams will fund you through. Lewis Hamilton didn't come from wealth by any means, but his talents in Karting, F3 and F2 were enough for McLaren to take notice, and now he is a 7 time world champion.

Well yes and no. Lewis was able to move into Mclaren because his father had ties to Ron Dennis, otherwise he would have started in a backmarker team like most other drivers. So even in the case of Lewis, he was extremely fortunate, moreso than even drivers like Senna who started in Toleman and had to prove their worth.

Not all f1 drivers were rich when they were young, there are some drivers who where medium class when they started, like Vettel, Hamilton, Perez or Kimi. The thing is that, beacause of their talent, they got into formula 1 thanks to sponsors and companies behind them, also joining scuderias who were interested in their talents. They also start to earn money for themselves winning championships in karting and the other formula competitions, so it's not that you have to have all those millions before even thinking to get in formula 1

He forgot to explain that when you're very talented, sponsors pay for your career progression. More successful teams will also take notice of you. You can buy yourself in with money but then you only get in a small team that never wins. The big teams like Ferrari, RedBull and Mercedes don't need the money because they have enough money. They only want talented drivers who can win. The weaker teams need the money to exist. So it's not just about the money, because you'll never win that way, it's about the talent.

Like others have said, you don't have to win the championship to move up, however winning the championship is both a blessing and a curse, because in Formula 2 and Formula 3 you're not allowed to compete anymore once you're the champion. So the only logic step is moving up. But then you can end up in a situation like Oscar Piastri who won the F2 championship back in 2021 and had to skip the 2022 because there was no seat for him in F1. The reality is that F1 is also a matter of timing, you could be the greatest driver but if your arrival year is a quiet one because all the seats are taken... well too bad... unless a team has the money to break a contract to let you in (which would be very surprising but then again). Either that's the end of the line or maybe you'll have to go and race into an entirely different series if your skills are versatile and all you want to do is race regardless of the vehicle.

There's also the physical aspects. 1) Races are around 1.5-2 hours long and it can get up to 120 degrees (Fahrenheit) in the car 2) The drivers have to withstand up to 6Gs of force 3) Usually their necks can withstand around 70 pounds of force due to the high speeds 4)Sometimes they lose up to 10 POUNDS during a single race So basically: Physical Pain. A lot of it.

Checo Perez, the one mexican currently on the grid, started into karting using parts that the other kids discarted (that's why he's so good at managing tyres) and was actually banned from karting in Mexico for winning against a politician's kid. Got the attention of the richest man in Mexico, Carlos Slim, who told him to move to europe and to this day is his sponsor. 14 y/o Checo got to Germany with $700 (USD) in 2004 and no ticket back home, he lived upside of a restaurant where he worked on weekdays and would kart on weekends. He was too young to compete so he lied about his age. He got into the Ferrari academy and when he finally got to F1 with Sauber (and sometimes even to this moment) people called him a "Pay driver"

There's gotta be similar videos regarding racing in the USA. I believe they also start in karts, but I'd like to know more about when young drivers start to specialize on the path to either open-wheel (IndyCar), stock cars (NASCAR), or sports cars (LeMans/GT). In any case, I'm sure that it's also equally ridiculously expensive. Compared to baseball, football, basketball, soccer, ice hockey, and cricket (arguably the top six sports globally), competitive motorsports are out of reach for most kids around the world.

Y’all’s discussion starting around the 5 and a half mark is exactly why American drivers have always had difficulty getting into F1. Not to say other countries don’t have difficulties, but we also have so much motorsports and sports in general here in the US that it’s not even necessary to go overseas to carve a career. We have Nascar, Indycar, IMSA Sports cars, stadium trucks, USAC, NHRA, and I haven’t even mentioned any two wheel racing, 4 wheel stunts, or anything outside motorsports which would be far more cost efficient. Most other places overseas outside of F1 and open wheel in general is sports cars and and even fewer also have Touring Cars and Rallying. But for the most part, that’s it.

So if you make it to the 20 best drivers in the world, considering some of the older drivers have been in F1 for more than 15 years (therefore they were not competing for the lower titles), chances are that you have won titles. 'Cause you need to be the best to reach F1.

This video is highly missrepresentative. Entire process doesnt look like that, take Max Verstappen as example, he finished 3rd in F3 and next season was already in F1. Also not all drivers pay for the seat, teams that are at the bottom or in the midfield often take on sponsorships that include a seat for a driver. Driver needs to be decent enough which is pretty much guaranteed by super licence and no seat in F1 costs 30 million. Like i said its more of sponsorship deal, driver always comes with a sponsor and sponsor would have to pay majority of those 30 million to have their logo in prime spot on the car. So its more like 6-8 million at most for a seat and again its a part of sponsorship deal
