"You Go To Hell." - No Country For Old Men (2007) #shorts #nocountryforoldmen
No Country for Old Men is a 2007 American neo-Western crime thriller film written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, based on Cormac McCarthy's 2005 novel of the same name. Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, and Josh Brolin, the film is set in the desert landscape of 1980 West Texas. The film revisits the themes of fate, conscience, and circumstance that the Coen brothers had explored in the films Blood Simple (1984), Raising Arizona (1987), and Fargo (1996). The film follows three main characters: Llewelyn Moss (Brolin), a Vietnam War veteran and welder who stumbles upon a large sum of money in the desert; Anton Chigurh (Bardem), a hitman who is sent to recover the money; and Ed Tom Bell (Jones), a sheriff investigating the crime. The film also stars Kelly Macdonald as Moss's wife Carla Jean and Woody Harrelson as a bounty hunter seeking Moss and the return of the $2 million.

Javier Bardem was born to play villain roles like this. There’s something about his voice and the way he can articulate his expressions that allows him to completely command a scene. Carson forgot the cardinal rule of these kinds of situations: never willingly allow yourself to be taken to a secondary location. Carson's best chance at surviving the situation was to fight back immediately on the stairs. Sure, Chigurh would shoot him, but you can survive getting shot if you don't allow your attacker to take careful aim. And the stairs is a public enough location, and the two of them falling down the stairs would make enough noise, that it's possible Chigurh would be forced to flee the scene before he's able to make sure Carson's dead. It's a slim chance of survival but better slim than none.

Ever notice in this movie in public and/or open spaces, there are no ''witnesses''? Whether at the gas station, on the street, or in the desert. The only time there was a witness was when Anton shot the guy that employed him in front of the accountant. And we all know how that ended for him.
@ryand.3858

@@zakaria600hate to nit pick but shotguns really don’t have any spread at close range; it’s basically a rifle until you’re more than 30-40’, especially with buckshot. Still I agree with everything else you said. I don’t think fighting him on the stairs would’ve helped much if any considering there would be nowhere to run. Maybe if you had a backup weapon you could try to get the drop on him but it was kind of an unwinnable situation IMO.
What a conversation, to come to this: bargaining for your life yet the ego is killing any attempts for success. You could see it coming.

@@dalegoodman9779 it's because the money wouldn't be passed by hand. It doesn't matter, because Chigurh was going to kill him anyway.
Bone chilling man. The best actor
His tone of voice is out of this world
When he says it will be brought to me and placed at my feet he sound just like Xerxes from 300 😂
This is the kind of psychopath you only survive by being interesting. Carson wasn't interesting, and Anton killed him very quickly because of it. His mocking tone was one of disappointment and you can almost hear the unsaid thought before he asks him... _I've been chasing you for weeks..._ "...an ATM?" He wanted Carson to be interesting. It wasn't the "I could go home", which was a genuine observation Anton was willing to entertain, but the bribery afterwards, a behavior Anton clearly considered to be cattle-like. In his own twisted sense of honor, he even tried to give Carson the opportunity to be interesting with the comment about meeting the situation with truth and dignity. He flat out refused, so Anton blasted him. So, friends, if you meet someone like this, you better start getting existential or give them something to really think about or they are gonna Chigurh all over you. 😮

You're dead either way. Moss's wife literally challenged Chigurn's moral code from the ground up, removing chance completely from his equation and refusing to play his game. He still killed her.

@@JJ_-fp9sj Other factors can weigh in, too. It depends on a lot of things, but here, I think Anton expected and _desired_ an intellectual rival of sorts in Carson, which weighed in a bit

@@isMatvei While possibly true (I can totally see it being so), I think it's possible Anton didn't even truly understand himself - he is a psychobiological killing machine that derives emotional (and possibly even sexual) pleasure from hunting prey and then killing it. The intellectual sparring would not really hold that primal instinct at bay - that's what drives him more than anything else. All the psychobabble he spews is ultimately a sacrifice to his deity, the God of Chance, which Anton uses to allow him to fulfill himself and justify any means to that end. Even after that car accident, I doubt he quit his day job.

You may be right. However, Anton certainly derives something from the exchange, whether it was in unravelling Carson's true quality or simply the nature of his underlying and contrasting principles. In doing so, in "figuring out" his victims through their driving forces it's as if he's already weighed the value of their existences, already killed them in accordance with his own guidelines. So when he pulls the trigger it's just like sealing the deal. Carson in my opinion was already dead to Anton and he knows it, hence racing through the 5 stages of grief. He never reaches a point of acceptance however, and that seems to mildly irritate Anton who prefers closing chapters 😂

Or ya know, maybe try to do something. You're most likely to die anyhow. Why not try to find out if there still quite so philosophical with someone's thumbs trying to make jelly of their eyeballs?
As I have said many many times before , one the best films ever mafe , in my humble opinion 📽️🎬❤
They need a PART 2 🎬
I'l never understand why Carson walked up in to the room with Anton. Surely he would know his fate was sealed once he got there.

For the same reason the condemned walk up to the execution chambers. The desire to live and breathe a few more seconds as noncompliance would be lethal or very painful and useless regardless. So the basic instinct is to try to survive the last few seconds as much pain free as possible.

Some of the best written and acted dialogue ever.

Put your thumb over their mouths and just watch their eyes act. Just perfect.
The expressions, micro movements, and sheer emotion woody harelson does is soooo goood.

You don’t let a guy like Anton chase you. Mr Moss figured that out eventually it’s Texas he should have just stayed home and when Anton showed up just give him a pair of 12 ga slugs right through the door.
The change in Antons eyes after he says "if the rule you followed brought you to this" was so subtle but such good acting
I love his grin when Carson starts talking about money and ATMs.

So calm, so polite, and so menacing. Other actors have succeeded in doing the same but none to this mans level. Truly an amazing performance that demands recognition.
Some Clinical Psychologist said Chigurh was the best portrayed psychopath she’s ever seen in movies
He’s like “I might be able to talk my way outta this” Once he realizes he’s fucked his whole face changes.
This scene almost rivals the confrontation scene in 'Heat' with DeNiro and Pacino. The Coen Brothers are iconic writers.

I hate how these clips cut out the space between the lines. The space and timing is part of what makes it great.

And then Carson politely excused himself and went home to see his in-laws.
