You Don't Relate To Characters; You Relate To Their Experiences

Ойын-сауық

We often look at characters and believe to have relatable qualities to them, but often misinterpret these traits just with their experiences. Are we able to relate to characters in their entirety and not just their experiences? Find out today at 7PM Eastern! Only on Cartoon Network!

"I relate to me" is maturity. You don't need to find a character to superimpose your likeness into, you are yourself without comparison.

You don’t need to share experiences with a character, you just need experiences similar enough where your basic empathy turns into a deeper understanding and possibly compassionate response.

"I love the kind of woman that will actually just kill me. You know, when I left the house today I was thinking "Damn, I really hope some hot chick paints my brains all over some fucking hallway." And here we are. I mean really, just absolutely destroy me. I'm talkin' full on, watermelon-in-the-thighs level carnage. And I want it to scare the shit outta me. I mean I hope I piss myself. I hope I piss myself and you call me your little "peepee pisspiss boy." I want you to fuck me up. I mean I want you to make me your bitch. Your little peepee-piss-myself-bitch. I want it to get embarressing. I mean like... weirdly embarressing. Unsanitary, too. We should be entirely different people, by the end of the first eight hours. Do you understand what I'm trying to say here? I mean, l'm a real freak. I'm not normal. Ma'am... Please... You have to crush me."

Your mini-montages are getting better, fr. I think a lot of people misunderstand Superman and Gon a lot and can confuse them for being very surface level. Dope analysis

Agreed I think he misunderstood why people say they “relate” to characters which lead to his conclusion that it’s their “experiences”. I think he trying to get at meaning their reactions and interaction, hence why the prioritization of realism in character writing is so heavily pushed

This is a weird take. I relate to characters who are in situations I have never been in. Their responses and interactions make them relatable or at least compelling. Like a demon who works at a deli. Tries to cut ham but can’t work the slicer. Good video tho 🔥

I really see your point moshouku tensei jobless reincarnation rudeus is a character that most shouldn't relate with dude is disgusting and doesn't deserve sympathy for who he is But the experience he goes through trying hard failing pick yourself up learn to grieve How the story is framed and it leads to feel what he feels That's where this series becomes a masterpiece We maybe don't relate to who rudeus and Paul are but we relate to the experience of loving caring and fixing a misunderstanding and forgiving each other and learn to be in a better relationship because of it

I love the concept of this video. I think writers that effectively make the audience care for characters that SHOULD feel distant in position and scale have skill in pathos in their story building. I like the kratos mention because i think he fits this idea (esp in the sequel series). If you take Kratos and the GoW series, surface level is a power fantasy that ppl would like because he does other things. When you see the depth to his struggle (mental guilt and PTSD) and how he acts outwardly, you seem to want to root for his success (to overcome his mental battle versus HIMSELF). Overcoming our own personal turmoil (esp when we feel like we deserve it) is a highly relatable human experience that captures the fans of the lore of this series. Thank you for making this video, dude. Identity and relatability is a line that ppl tend to blur but im happy you are pointing out where the line is.

Just to add on with the Kratos ex. I don't think he's relatable if you take the events of his story and think they DIRECTLY apply to you. However I think the actions that the character takes to move towards his change is a journey I find fascinating (from a learning perspective and from an emotional perspective). Kratos in the sequel series has this doubt on raising a capable child due to his shortcomings in his past and the event of the current series. I relate to this by my own personal doubt on my capability to teach others for my job position irl. I often second guess my ability to train my coworkers properly and it blowing up in my face. The scope and scale of what events Kratos has and what I do ARE COMPLETELY off, but the ideas and themes (to me) are the same. Just my 2 cents. 😅

I always thought a good character should be compelling and interesting first before anything else I can't relate to a villain kicking the faces of orphan babies. But man, if that same villain could also play mind tricks with the protagonist and their back and forth with each other is amazing. I might put him in top 10

I sometimes make the distinction between characters I 'relate' to (having similar experiences, struggles and views to me), And characters I 'kin' (irrespective of differences or similarities in upbringing, worldview or situation, their fundamental perspectives, way of thinking, demeanour, personality, strengths and flaws mirrors my own and even the way they're viewed by other characters mirrors the way I'm viewed, much of this, even to the degree that even people I know can agree and if I do also 'relate' to the characters, watching them may feel both validating but also strange and embarrassing or even cringey) When it comes to my 'kinlist', let's say, a few characters come to mind, in more or less this order: Satoru Fujinuma (Erased - The Town Without Me) Kenshin Himura (Rurouni Kenshin) Rei Kiriyama (March Comes In Like A Lion) Makoto Yuuki (Persona 3) Houtarou Oreki (Hyouka) Prince Ashitaka (Princess Mononoke) Itachi Uchiha (Naruto: Shippuden) Huey Freeman (The Boondocks) Ryu (Street Fighter) (these two summarise traits common between the aforementioned but are moreso more popular examples that other people often compare me to instead, that I simply agree with to some extent, at least) Yuki Souma (Fruits Basket) L Lawliet (Death Note)

First off, love the video. Mans stay cooking. Second, the character I relate to is Nico Robin in terms of coming from a shitty situation and finding something better, something worth fighting for and knowing this something would fight for you too no matter what is amazing man. I can't even look at the "I want to live!!!" panel without wanting to cry.

There's no respectful way to be disrespectful to a dude in his own comments section. You could've kept on scrolling and kept that to yourself. Conversely, you could expound upon your shallow derision; give it some zest and complexity so that we're not concluding that you're just another ignorant asshole with a keyboard. You know, respectfully & whatnot.
