One thing I DID actually forget to mention, is that Michael was slowing when JV went for the send. But no one is quite sure of what caused it. But JV didn't know that, I guess. Also edit fails being chopped out.

The theory was the Michael had a slow puncture, which is why JV was faster at that point of the race. But as you said, nobody actually knows and the Michael nor Ferrari never commented on it.

I heard rumours like that - if he knew his car was damaged already, it might have been judged as pre-meditated after all, so likely everyone concerned kept quiet about that bit after the event.

I remember comments by the SpeedTV coverage that Michael was struggling and they thought it might have been an inferior set of tyres. One thing new to me today is the bit about the battery hanging by the wires. If I ever knew about it, it has been forgotten. I do remember on the day being happy to see Michael fail to take out Jacques. On that last corner it did look to me that Berger had let up a little to let Jacques be on the podium.

​@@rupertpupkin9630 Emmo joined his brother's team. In retrospect its more "aww that's sweet" than anything else. Villeneuve was, effectively, moving to Tyrrell with better engines and expecting to win the title straight off, which just comes across as thick.

IF is F1 backwards as Mr Walker used to say. I remember watching it live, thanks for making me feel old. Jacques was brilliant and so frustrating that season made so many mistakes but then would do something brilliant. One of my favourite seasons

Holy crap, I can't believe I never remember hearing that stat of neither driver being on the podium at the same time. That has to be million-to-one odds. I really doubt there was a direct threat to Sauber from Ferrari. That kind of stuff is never said aloud.

As I recall (and it has been 25 years) at the post race interview, when asked about it, Jacques, tongue firmly in cheek, said something like, "His hand must have slipped on the steering wheel." Yeah, sure, Jacques.

Fun fact: Up until he finished 3rd in this race, Jacques Villeneuve had only been on the podium in 1st place all season. He didn't finish in 2nd or 3rd at any other race

I must say, that i remember even one curriosity, DC says, that even he slow down for Villeneuve, because he wanted be secure, that JV will won the title. He admired it. And TBH, this 90s stuff was still the best, as it was really a Rock n Roll hall of fame of Motorsport.

DC and JV were good friends, IIRC they both slept in their own motorhomes in the paddock for the European races and had barbecues together in the evenings (Gilles Villeneuve also brought his motorhome).

On the ITV coverage of this race they did a driver special interview with Mika Häkkinen. In the interview he said his goal was to be world champion. After the interview Martin Brundle scoffed "he says he wants to be world champion. He should think about winning a race first as he hasn't won one yet" That must've been a large slice of humble pie for him

Brundle was Schumacher's strongest team mate. Don't forget it took hakkenin 4 years to win 1 single race with McLaren. And he had V10 power all those year's. He had the best car 98,99. I believe even 2000 McLaren was still the best. Brundle didn't win a race but he never had the opportunities like hakkenin or Damon hill or Jaques Villeneuve either. Same goes for Jean alasi.

@@speedmann194 Ouh shut up mate ! The McLaren Peugeot in '95 could have been a V10 but un underdeveloped S**t one that stood in one piece depending on its mood. In '96 The Mercedes was surely an improvement but was still way far the top guys (& still unreliable) '97 Started the way up. And no in 2000 Ferrari was clearly better than the McLaren, Hakkinen still suffered more retirement (5 to 3 i think) and without his engine blowing up in smoke at Indianapolis he would have been a 3 time WDC. (Not bad for a guy who was smacked into an armco barrier so hard that he passed out in a freaking coma for 3 days: even getting back into a F1 car after that can be seen as a great result, let alone winning 2 championship and fighting for 3 of 'em ...against a dude who was, arguably, the best talent of that era): Mika is a legend, he got those chances because he was next level good, and guys like him get on the top car sooner or later.

Do you think if senna and Schumacher were team mates at McLaren 94-97 it would've took them that long ?? I counted the race's McLaren finished. It was reliable enough to complete over 40 race's between 94-97 I have no doubt senna, Schumacher would've won multiple race's by then.

I love how you rather randomly but perfectly contexted throw in 'the Michael' when speaking about him. It just comes across as a respectful nod to Schumacher, Häkkinen and their era.

he had a few pieces of genius in that first season of his. ralf schumacher crashed at monza and he made up some excuse why he crashed. martin brundle said on live tv 'that sounds like a load of cobblers'. referring to schumacher/shoe-maker cobblers..... genius.

I'll never forget when Martin Brundle was doing his Grid walk he was standing in between the Williams and the Ferrari on the Grid and he said "We've got Goldylocks on one side, and golden gonads on the other" Legend. *He called Villeneuve Goldylocks because Jacques had dyed his hair Blonde earlier in the season*

He's the only person whom I can stand doing a grid walk. So many others coo over "stars" (most of whom I haven't heard of, and clearly have _no_ knowledge or passion for F1) but he'd rather talk to the driver (and he's excellent at spotting which ones _don't_ want to talk, even from a distance!), or the engineer or mechanics. If he talks to a celebrity, it's one who is renowned for their love of the sport (like Rowan Atkinson. He's genuinely passionate and knowledgeable). And of course, his choice of words, as in your excellent example, is top notch. Having said that, I'm glad I only get the highlights package because they cut that grid walk rubbish out.

The one thing people don't bring up when they talk about Michael doing dodgy things on track is that ironically it could have cost him two WC's. Jacques as you've said wasn't going to make the corner and only did because Michael smacked into him. And he could have won in Monaco in 2006 even if he hadn't started on pole given the fact he finished fifth from a pitlane start

Don't agree on JV not making the corner. I think he would have run pretty deep sure... and Michael could have cut back inside and on the battle would have gone. Too bad Schumacher wasn't up for a street fight.

The cars had fairly fragile suspensions back then and a wheel to wheel contact would've likely ended JV's race on the spot. There's a reason why MSC tried to turn in on him. JV was lucky to finish that race.

Even if Jacques ran wide, he was always gonna overtake Michael at some point imo. He was miles faster and Michael was chewing his tires up.

8:24 I think part of the reason why MSC was disqualified was because it was the second time he'd done something like this (1994 being the first), while when Senna did it in 1990 (as fucked up as it was) it was the first time.

Ross Brawn claimed in Beyond The Grid that after the incident The Michael stormed into the garage effing and jeffing, claiming JV pushed him off. Ferrari then showed the outside footage and only then did he realise how badly he messed up. Allegedly…

Schumacher wasnt "kick out". His points, victories, podiuns and poles still remains. He only lost the "second place" and became last. But he still has his 78 points, but in last. There was no real punishment at the end

I remember watching this live and sweating for JV in case he had damage, but i remember the comment from Martin Brundle the most lol. He was the 1st person the say anything about MS being a dirty player (whilst on air) and fully knew what MS did. I was so glad when he lost that year but the disqualification shouldve been for the following season NOT the one that just ended.

4:28 actually I am here because of Qualifying, I feel like it is not talked about enough. What are the odds that three drivers set identical times? Let alone it is for the top 3 on the grid. and then at the final race of the season, the championship decider! Incredible! Like imagine at the Abu Dhabi 2021 Quali Verstappen, Hamilton and Bottas (or Perez) did that, that'd be talked about and referenced like forever on social media

Ditto. It is a big, big, big coincidence. Their split times weren't particularly close which makes it weirder. Also, all the weird shenanigans going behind the scenes that week-end. Seems like it is one of those rare things that even respected F1 insiders get a bit conspirational about. AFAIK Williams never publicly released their GPS data which would have helped to squash some doubts.

Why does Jacques get so much bad press? His attitude is hilarious, I love it. So what if he burned out early, he had 4 great seasons at the top of the sport, 2 in IndyCar and 2 in F1, back when IndyCar was a legit rival to F1

Not sure you can call his F1 achievements great when put into perspective. Yes, he was an F1 rookie in '96, but he was hyped as the talent of the century and he very clearly lost out to Damon Hill whom nobody regarded as a super talent. Also, in 1997, the Williams was far superior and faster than the Ferrari - and yet, had Schumacher's last set of tyres not developed blisters, Villeneuve would have lost the championship. As a matter of fact, with the machinery he had, he should've bagged the title at least 3 races early. But he didn't. After 1997, he had practically no more moments of brilliance and especially towards the end of the career, he was losing out pretty badly to his team mates. And yet he has some pretty controversial - often unfounded - opinions that he likes to share with the world all the time.

Villeneuve had epic qualifying laps and race performances in the '98 Williams and early BAR's in 1999 and 2000... all very poor midfield cars. To say he "did nothing" after 1997 is like saying Alonso has done fuck all since 2013 😂🤦‍♂️ He also had one of the great rookie seasons, taking the title battle to the last race - after an epic win in Portugal - and won the F1 championship in only his second season. Add his CART championship and legendary Indy 505 win and he's a motorsport legend. Only Andretti and Fittipaldi have equalled that triple feat.

None since Senna. Hamilton made mistakes, but he's never unsportsmanlike on track. You can argue that for Verstappen, but him pushing drivers off track is legal and can be considered as hard racing. Unless you have a bias against a certain driver, by which you can paint someone however you like.

That entire race had a surreal vibe to it when I finally saw it for the first time.

Yep. I remember watching this late at night, down under in Australia. When the lap forty-eight 'incident' happened I shouted so loudly, I woke my girlfriend, who was sleeping in our bedroom at the other end of the house! I got some stern looks from her when she came out to investigate what calamity had befallen me. My answer didn't really satisfy... apparently. Thanks for the video, mate.

Remember this well. I was go karting when the qualifying session was taking place and couldn't quite believe the result when I finished up and saw it on the TV! The mid to late 90's was a great time to be an F1 fan, especially looking back now and comparing it to much of the 2000s and 2010s.

The truth is, Schumacher was not an honourable competitor. There have been a number of drivers who demonstrate enormous egos, ruthless dispositions, and an obvious sense of entitlement. Some people find those to be admirable qualities.

I wasnt around to see that season but I always found it a bit off that Msc wasnt disqualified from the '98 season instead. Just being disqualified from the' 97 season which he had already lost is like getting no punishment at all

Living in Quebec at the time and as a 12 year old I was absolutely thrilled for JV. He was an absolute megastar with his famous last name and bleached blonde hair (which I never understood why that was a thing in the late 90's) and just generally being a Quebecois hero at a time when the Quebec independence movement was at it's height. I have such vivid memories of following this entire season and cheering on JV, my racing hero at the time

Jerez 1997 was the one and only F1 race I've ever attended. I learned on that day that an F1 GP race was best viewed on the telly. Watching live it's a case of " here they come, there they go " ( out of sight usually ). Another thing I noticed was the enormous " farts " the cars made while decelerating.

Spa is the place to go to,was there at the massive wipeout!

I remember that qualifying time and I remember watching both it and the race live as RTE (the Irish national broadcaster) showed qualifying and the races live back then.

Also that Arrows/Bridgestone combo was bloody quick on its day, too. Arrows were underrated and unlucky in 97, too. Hill was still arguably giving it his all in that shitbox of a car

Car was very good around tight twisty stuff so that's why you see Hill having those fantastic proformances at Hungary and Jerez and having Bridgestone tyre which were more often than not better than the goodyear rubber that year helped greatly but the two achilles's heels of the Arrow were reliability and the Yamaha engine.

i saw this race live on the ITV coverage. can't say i was surprised to see schummi have swipe at JV. i was glad it worked out for JV for at the time, I was still bitter about 94 Adelaide.

Schumacher is one of the greatest but he have done many questionable things. Heck even in his comeback he almost pushed approaching car into a pit wall.

Aidan, the Sauber thing was absolutely true. During the race, Jean Toft walked down to the Sauber pit and asked/directed them hold up the Williams team. It was on the world feed and the commentators in Japan even made a mention of it. I’m not sure why they didn’t punch the Sauber team’s ticket at that point because it was AIRED ON LIVE TELEVISION

I saw it live. Jacques Villeneuve was driving like a man possessed that day. He was not going to be denied that day. I still can't believe Schumacher pulled that desperation move AGAIN!! Over the years many have attempted to explain this incident away. The bottom line is Michael was aware he was about to lose the championship right there. Crashing Villeneuve was the only option. He hadn't had any accidents that season. Why then?

As a Ferrari fan I'm sad Michael couldn't win the title that year but if it was to be anyone else that won it then I'm glad it was the son of Gilles Villeneuve #27. Gilles himself would've deserved to win multiple titles.

I too am Canadian. My I remember it was Gilles that got me into F1. It was 1982. My dad got tickets to the Detroit GP. I was stoked. Just a month before we were to go. Gilles died in his tragic accident at Zolder. We still attended but there was only one Ferrari participating.

@@TrainWreck444 I have been to over 80 GP in my life. As mentioned my first was Detroit 1982. The very first car I saw on track was Michele Alboreto in the Tyrrell 011. The noise was so amazing. That year, they were running both normally asperated and turbo engines. I didn't know it at the time because I only remember the noisy ones. The next year I returned with my dad and the entire field was now turbos. I was very upset. There was no more noise. I asked my dad why and he said "Turbos Chris". We never went to another race until 1989. I remember being at the Canadian GP in 1995. I was sitting 2nd row on the starting grid, front row of the grandstand. It was Jean Alesi's Birthday. I got everyone singing Happy Birthday and he threw his gloves over the fence to me. He went on to win that race after a very long winless streak for Ferrari. Canada had just bought a bunch of metal grandstands that year. The Ferrari 412 T2 was so powerful. You could feel it via your a..hole coming up the straight, via "The Wall of Champions", through the metal grandstands. Once the turbo hybrid era came, I went to one race in 2014 and never been to another one. The noise of the V10s and V12s was something I can't forget.

Ahh 97 in Jerez, I remember it well. In fact i don't think i was happier at the outcome of a race before or since then (at least until Russell wins his 1st race). This was one of the most exciting races i think i have seen, and i miss having a driver on the grid with the character of someone like JV.

I am so happy to see this remade, probably up there with Option 13 in terms of interest

1997. A great year for Canada and Jacques Villeneuve was a great part of it.

People who moan about Sauber holding up JV like to forget Hill held up Schumacher at the previous race just as bad. Cost him 5 seconds in one lap

I remember it well, especially after giving the benefit of doubt at Adelaide. I didn't know about the German and Italian press reaction though. Very interesting. Of course they changed their tune a few seasons later. 😀

Verstappen and Schumacher both have/had that same “run over my own dog” to win mentality.

Max is pretty mild in comparison with Schumacher and Senna....Max is a different driver IMO...Hard but fair...

I was a massive JV fan in the 1990's. Best helmet design too. 👌

I remember watching this race live on tv and when it happened, it removed all doubt in my mind that Schumacher and Hills crash in Adelaide 94 was definitely deliberate and not a racing incident

I watched it live back when and I've watched the 20th anniversary piece multiple times as it is rather enjoyable. The anniversary piece kind of put Jaques in a more positive light than I had previously considered him, which was refreshing. If you havn't watched it it's a great view.

No, he was disqualified for blocking people in practice on about three occasions. Nowadays in theory if you do it once you get a penalty, but back then it would take numerous occasions (and warnings) before they threw the book at you. Interestingly enough, however, the FIA in the 80's and early 90's was incredibly harsh with penalties. Gerhard, you crept forward on the start line, ONE MINUTE PENALTY Nigel, because we forgot to turn the lights on the at the end of the pitlane and you had no idea when it was safe to join the circuit, we're going to disqualify you.

Even though JV had been doing it several times that season, it was still seen as being a little bit “convenient” he be disqualified from a whole race because of it. 10 second stop go penalty would have been a saner penalty.

this was before all the minor penalties got added. back then it was just drive through, DSQ, 3 race ban, full season exclusion. Anything too little for such a penalty didn"t give any

Ocon was given a penalty for doing the exact same thing in 2018. And that was unlapping himself.

Also another reason was Schumacher had stole Frentzen's Girlfriend previously a few years back that Girlfriend went on to be Schumacher's wife!!! XD

@@adammercer6004 Stolen is, by Frentzen's accord, a much to harsh word. As Frentzen told the story to many German media outlets, Corinna had been Frentzen's girlfriend, they separated and a few weeks later e got together with Schumacher. None the less, Frentzen did not like Schumacher too much. There was a Mercedes junior team of three, Frentzen, Wendlinger and Schumacher and most of the people involved thought that they all should make it to F1, but in that order. Well, deception by Schumacher's manage Weber changed that and Wendlinger and Frentzen were only able to enter F1 when Schumacher was already a driver who was scoring podiums and wins.

1997 was my 2nd proper season watching every race and I remember a lot about this and Hungary that year. Being 11 at the time and seeing Damon win I automatically wanted villenueve to win so I got really invested, especially after Australia qually where he destroyed everyone. There’s probably a lot of rose tinted glasses and nostalgia but they were great times in f1 Drive to survive would make an entire season based on what happened that weekend in Jerez.

Great video, brought back loads of memories. One question, was it ever proven that JV doesn't make the corner? I remember MS/Ferrari claiming it, but I've never seen JV/Williams, anyone else confirm anything other than he was going very deep. Happy to stand corrected though as you know a huge amount about F1.

10:50. ‘New fans’ are the scapegoat of a toxic fanbase that has ALWAYS been there….they just give the gatekeepers someone to blame. I’m old enough to remember the hate Prost received, Senna and Schumacher got…Seb being booed and jeered just for wining and being happy about it, I remember Nico Rosberg being literally chased all around Europe by British Hamilton fans and booed into a retirement in 2016….’new fans’ are the problem?! No not at all.

I was a big fan of F1 from around 1977 until May 1982. Well, I watched a few more races in 1982 and afterwards but it was never the same. I was not big into sport, but I became a big Gilles Villeneuve fan when I received a subscription to Road & Track magazine as a gift in 1977. I never really had any heroes in the world of sports until GV. I was lucky enough to attend the 1982 USGP West in Long Beach and got to see my hero take a post-race lap of the track in the back of a Toyota truck along with Niki Lauda and Keke Rosberg, two of my other favorites. For the longest time, even when they were borderline backmarkers, I was still a Ferrari fan, right up until the day that they signed Schumacher. I started to get back into following racing when Jacques started in CART/Indy Car. Nearly winning as a rookie and then winning the next year was seriously exciting. Then when he moved to F1 I had to start following that series again, hoping to see him do what his father was unable to accomplish. I was too cheap to pay for cable TV but I was technically savvy so I did rewire the cable box, tapping my neighbor's connection to be able to watch the races (the statute of limitations has passed, right?) Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I cannot respect the 'win at all costs' mentality, and prefer honor and integrity. I remember Gilles following team orders and let Scheckter win the title in 1979 even though he could have taken it for himself, and I remember Pironi take the victory in San Marino 1982. Maybe Gilles was a little naive and idealistic as some have said, but I liked that about him. Prost, Senna, Michael Schumacher? Brutal and cutthroat, the lot of them, resorting to underhanded techniques instead of driving talent to get victories, and in my idealistic world that is not to be admired. Yes, they had talent behind the wheel, but their unwillingness to take the loss just exemplified the spoiled rich brat attitude that seemed pervade F1 (and may still - I haven't watched a race in years...) Gilles seemed to be the opposite of this, from a simpler background but with a desire to race anything and everything, and had the talent to win. Whilst Jacques may not have had that same working-class background, he showed that he had the talent to win and was able to do so with skill rather than resorting to underhanded techniques to secure victories. I definitely remember watching the 1997 European Grand Prix. Of course I wanted Jacques to win, but I knew that Schumi would try something incredibly brazen and desperate. There was absolutely no surprise when he tried to take out Jacques, but it was a bit surprising given how poor the attempt was. This is a driver with plenty of experience, in multiple series no less, at employing this exact cheap and desperate tactic so you'd think that he would be better at it. Not that I was complaining as the outcome that I wanted to see was unfolding before my eyes. It was a good day and the good guys actually won, unlike how reality usually turns out. I will remember that victory, like my experiences at the one and only F1 race I attended, for the rest of my days.

Strange how many drivers that play dirty never get a chance to enjoy there winnings

All of Canada knew Jacques after that day. I was just a boy in ‘97 but I was watching F1 with my folks since the late 80s. They were the glory days… Jacques fought for that title and earned every bit of it. One of the most memorable races I’ve seen.

I never knew Max Mosely was responsible for the "reassembled by aircrash investigators" quote. I just remember hearing it on The Thick Of it, a gentle look at the politics of the early to mid 2000's for those that don't know of it.

Hey Aidan. What are your thoughts on making a video on Giorgia Pantano? It's not common to see a F1 back marker go back to the junior category after a few years in the top tier to absolutely dominate the junior cat.

I really do miss that era. Imean, the pictures are nice and all, and it's good to see Aidan not being afraid to show his face. However, I loved the gameplay footage playing in the background.

I watched that race....HELL YA I watched it! Gilles was my hero when I started watching F1....and now I got to cheer for Jacques, finally a Canadian with a shot at the title! I yelled at the TV when Michael hit him. That was such a gonzo move, too! There is no way he could have made that pass stick! It was ridiculous, and Michael should have known that, but instead of just letting Jacques over shoot the corner then repassing him, Michael got angry and did something stupid.

I don’t know, Aidan…I think Villenueve would’ve made that corner, but only barely. I watched this race live in Japan at the time and immediately said “1994!” I remember seeing the podium and it didn’t look like Coulthard was happy, as if he knew what was going to happen in the future as he was going to be second fiddle to Hakkinen.

I think he would have overshot it and Michael would have done a switchback.

This was the first season I watched, but I missed this race as I was on a rather crap holiday. Not exactly a villeneuve fan but I’m glad he won this.

Having the season ending at Jerez in Spain was a bit strange. Did seem a bit random but at least it gave an amazing finale!

This was the exact moment I decided to root against Michael for the rest of his career.

isn't this the season that JV bleached his hair which lead the Brundle's comment on the grid walk "On the left you have Goldilocks and on the right, Golden Gonads himself" :)

Just a quick link to the previous video regarding IndyCar and its marketability. This video here is the '95 IndyCar champion versus the '95 F1 champion. F1 also got the '97 & '98 CART champ in the form of Alex Zanardi in 1999, and the '99 CART champ in the form of Juan Pablo Montoya in 2001... One would have struggled to have manufactured a better opportunity to have answered the question of: _"Hmm,.. where'd these guys come from?!?? 🤔"_ But alas! That split was pretty costly 😐.

Yeah, Nostalgia makes some of us blind to most of the dodgy AF stuff that used to go on, and that our "heroes" are just people...

The most amazing thing is that Villeneuve was able to read the lips of Michael inside the car, from a far distance

These drivers can pick out loads of stuff we wouldn’t it’s ridiculous.

Part of the reason why Schumacher isn't in the top tier of Senna, Clark and Hamilton. A good driver but also a dirty cheat. His team cheated in 94 as well

It still boggles my mind that someone who won cart, Indy and the f1 championship never won a race after this...and his career fell off a cliff.

I don't know where anyone ever got the idea that the Michael had a reputation for fair play. Absolutely not - he was a win at all cost driver.
