    My uncle was an actual stenographer, and what he used to do is write things in shorthand on a notepad with pen. No bizarre keyboards like this. They used to have shifts in court back then, so all morning is writing in shorthand and all afternoon for him is to actually type it out using a manual typewriter.

    The Kickstarter is up for two more days. This 100$ board is a super low cost entry to steno. Real boards and the software are super expensive, as is the schooling. Considering that speech to text AIs aren't quite there, there is still demand to get more stenos out there, so this is a good option for some to consider. Also the Steno isn't something picked up in a few days. The program one takes to be a licensed stenographer can take months if not years. It has a low graduation rate since you *need* something like 300 wpm with 99% accuracy or something like that.

  • @ninjam77

    During the first lockdown I set myself the goal to be able to touch type at 100 WPM. I had tried to start touch typing but always went back to pecking when I was done practicing out of habit. In the end, I decided to learn Dvorak and switched my layout (forcing me to touch type as I couldn't find the keys any other way). After about 2 weeks I could type at a "acceptable" speed for me (45 WPM). Eventually after a month or so, I topped out at about 80-90 WPM which was my original typing speed (but this time I could also type numbers and punctuation without slowing down). After the pain of learning Dvorak, it had become a huge issue for using simple macros and playing games, so I decided to take the plunge back in to QWERTY; to my suprise I couldn't remember where any of the letters where and it took me a few days to even reach 30 WPM. Now about a year later? Damn, time moves fast! I've exceeded my goal and can now comfortable type at 120-130 WPM :D

    What makes steno typing really interesting is the duration of typing. I think that the fastest QWERTY typists can type faster than the typical stenographer speed but they cannot keep up in the long-run. Fun video btw! Always wanted to learn steno.

  • @powerpuff4ever

    @powerpuff4ever

    2 жыл бұрын

    The longevity thing is true but the typing speed isn’t. The fastest recorded QWERTY typing speed is 216 wpm while the fastest steno speed is 360 wpm. Keep in mind that a stenographer’s whole job is keeping up with human speech so even an entry level stenographer is expected to type at 150wpm with the average trending closer to 200wpm with over 90% accuracy. You would need the fastest QWERTY typists in the world and they would still only be able to compete with any cluster of stenographers in a county with maybe one year of full time experience

    Well, the thing is that finger speed is less in steno than in regular typing. If you think about it, each chord in steno is a syllable or word, so to have the same wpm speed, a qwerty typist needs to be hitting characters something like 4x as fast just to stay even. So it makes sense that it is easier for a steno writer to have more stamina. There are different "theories" of steno that affects this equation too. Phoenix is more strict about certain sequences representing different sounds and word endings and stuff. So there is less memorizing needed, but you need a bit more speed in your hands. The other end of the spectrum is Magnum, which focuses more on specific shortcuts for different common words and even phrases. It requires more memorization and mental overhead, but you can reduce your finger speed even more.

It's easy to get disappointed, you just have to find a way to encourage yourself, & pick up your spirits, and get back to practice steno every day. Maybe don't set extreme goals, just do what you can handle each day, like 2 to 4 hours a day. Wishing you good luck at staying with Steno practice. Kathleen O'Neill

    The reason is you're typing entire syllables or words at the same time, instead of character by character. So your fingers have to go like 4x faster in normal typing to keep up. That combined with very light switches, means you can have a lot more stamina with steno. Court reporters may be taking down speech from people talking at bursts of 150-225wpm for hours at a time. Your fingers would fall off trying to that with regular typing.

    One nice thing about steno if you do a ton of writing is it is easier on the hands since you move your hands slower and generally use lighter key switches. I think I'd be more interested in doing steno than stuff like dvorak. Since it is so different, it shouldn't interfere with muscle memory of qwerty at all.

    I thought moving from an ISO to an ANSI board was painful (it's not by the way, it didn't take too long to retrain my pinkie to hit that enter key), this on the other hand... I think learning brain surgery and becoming competent at it is somewhat more achievable, than mastering this board and method of typing.

    Hah, it is hard but not THAT bad. Especially if you’re not trying to get certified. I think learning a spoken language is harder overall. I’ve been at it a couple of months now and can basically write any words, but still a bit slow (like 30wpm). Though I did recently get 120wpm for a burst of 28 easy words, so that was cool.

    You might be pleasantly surprised. I haven't been doing it that long and am still pretty slow, but once you know where the letters are, it is pretty quick to get up to 10-20wpm for doing short simple words like cat, ball, etc. Obviously there is a huge learning curve to get up to "graduation speed" of 225wpm for professional steno writers taking down live speech, but that level isn't needed for most people. But even if someone never gets over 80wpm, it'll be less hard on your hands since you're having a lot less movements per min and less individual finger pressing (for good form, you get your fingers in position in the air, and then just press down with your whole hands in one motion).

    We had that in college but the manual one that requires a roll of paper. If you know how to do stenography you just need to know how to use the keyboard. I graduated in 2014 and have completely forgotten about how to do steneography (Gregg shorthand) despite studying it for like 4 semesters (one of which required us to use the steno machine). The rule is stenography relies on how words are pronounce not written so technically you write what you hear.

    Wouldn't a piano suffice as an example? Regular keyboards are like playing a melody when typing, whereas playing chords are like a stenokeyboard?

    You have to press multiple keys with one fingers with steno, so it would be pretty uncomfortable with a piano keyboard m

    I dunno. I haven't been trying it that long, and it isn't THAT bad. Once you figure out the positions of the letters, it's more about getting used to thinking about things in terms of syllables. I'm still very slow, but I'd certainly be slow at morse code too I'd think lol.
